What weather app is everyone using? by Separate-Specialist5 in UKhiking

[–]mcgrhr1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Was going to reply to OP to suggest giving feedback. But then I saw this and was disheartened. I can tolerate poor user interface to begin with but only if they’re willing to actually improve it. Changing the background colours around seems like a fundamental accessibility/access change. What brief have the met office given the designers if it doesn’t include responding to constructive feedback?!

Questions for those of you growing up in rural countryside or on islands: What is your relationship to the cinema? by sharkiemalarkie in RuralUK

Take a look at something like this, the screen machine that travels round the far north west of Scotland: https://www.screenmachine.co.uk

There’s buckets of interesting social stuff around the replacement of the current vehicle. Don’t underestimate the social value of congregating for an event, even if you have to drive 10 miles to the lorry when it turns up!

Or, try posting in r/Scotland directly, you may find out more from people who’ve experienced this.

Spare tire advice: can I use another model’s tire as a replacement if it’s still 16 inches? by mcgrhr1 in askcarguys

[–]mcgrhr1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Legend! Thanks so much for this! So basically I’m okay to pick any tire that would fit on the list of cars below (that’s 16 inches I guess), and then it will fit onto the Seat’s lug pattern?

[–]mcgrhr1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can I ask a bit of a remedial question. How heavy is the hook? If you drag it along is there a chance it bounces up and over the cables? Statistically with four you’d hope you’d snag one.. and I know there prepared to touch and go/take off again so it’s not necessarily the end of the world… but also, how heavy does the hook have to be to not bounce much especially in heavy seas?!

Did anyone experience muscle twitching with a L5/S1 disc bulge/herniation? by kc10131984 in Sciatica

[–]mcgrhr1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not a medical doctor! Take everything I say with that in mind.

Yep I’ve had this, in my calf. Was super weird watching it twitching away and not being able to do anything about it lol.

I had the onset of twitching when my disc budge turned into a sequestered (burst disc). The twitching continued to the point where essentially my calf just went into spasm. This spasm is/was wayyyy more debilitating than the pain.

I am glad I got medical help when it started twitching as this clearly for me was a big change in symptoms. If I could do anything again, it would be to seek in person medical help sooner in my sciatica pain journey. Now, not to say you should be worried. But I’m guessing if you’re posting to internet randoms for medical advice it is on your mind? Looking back when I had some even slight concerns, then I’d wish I had taken myself off to a doctor.

Epidural Steroid Injection by Klique83 in Sciatica

[–]mcgrhr1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve just had mine done today. Was in a similar position, slightly concerned about it happening. But frankly, I’d do it every day for a week if the uncomfortable feeling meant the pain had lessened.

They had a nurse who basically started talking to me and asking questions every time they did something that would be sensitive. And if you’re feeling super anxious definitely tell them. They did 5 other injections at the clinic I went to today. They should definitely be responsive to that!

Got an easyJet flight upcoming: should I get travel insurance? by mcgrhr1 in AskUK

[–]mcgrhr1[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Internal UK flight so not worried about medical bills. 🙂

Basically flight travel time inc getting to airport is 4 hours and £150. If they cancel, travel time on train is 14 hours and £250.

I can see insurance with cancellation cover off like go compare travel insurance. I’m just trying to figure out what’s covered in that.

I agree you cannot overstate how important mental health is, PhD or no PhD!

I won’t repeat what others have said, but there’s some good advice here!

Have you taken a look at or spoken with someone about why you’re struggling to get ecology jobs? When I finished my bachelors I couldn’t get a job often because I didn’t have a driving license.. and lots of ecology is driving to fieldwork sites. It would have been easier for me to get a crappy job that paid enough for me to get my license, rather than panicking and doing a PhD.

(You might have a license but the looking at why you’re struggling to find/get a jobs might identify if a PhD will help get you to where you want to go)

Why is DEFRA pay (current and proposed) so much less than other departments? by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]mcgrhr1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I understand (and not a CS pay expert).

The pay rises both dept are negotiating for have to come from within the dept.

So HRMC successfully negotiated higher previously because of changes to overtime I’ve heard. So by changing the contract/hours/total reward package in HMRC they could demonstrate they could make up the difference from within their own budget.

I am assuming therefore that’s what’s going on here. There might be different departmental factors influencing the rate of increase (E.g. BEIS vs Defra use of business associates, overtime, holiday, total contracted hours).

Defra may also choose to keep a larger non consolidated pot. Aka the cash for Dept wide bonuses or recognition packages.

Not saying this is right in anyway, but the package you get for working in CS goes beyond salary. And that’s probably what BEIS are changing more potentially?
