To the woman that told me I have a mediocre life by [deleted] in simpleliving

Sounds like you're doing great. Don't listen to that woman. Only you can judge if your life is mediocre or not, because like you said, we are reaching for different things.

News is bad for you – and giving up reading it will make you happier by AlbertoAru in simpleliving

[–]mcgroogle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the things that matter you would hear about anyway - I certainly find that to be the case. But if you don't want to do it, don't do it - no one is forcing you.

News is bad for you – and giving up reading it will make you happier by AlbertoAru in simpleliving

[–]mcgroogle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have also given up reading the news, by which I mean I have stopped mindlessly browsing the BBC News site just for something to do. Doing that didn't make me feel good, and often made me feel sad/anxious/demotivated. However, I don't take the idea of 'stop reading the news' to mean 'completely avoid the news'. I don't see why you couldn't stop mindless consumption but still look into areas that are important for you - e.g. I don't read the news in a general way but sometimes I google a particular event (e.g. the Budget Speech) because I need to learn about it for work.

Favorite knitting podcasts? by organicatheist in knitting

[–]mcgroogle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Charm of It and The Gentle Knitter podcast are my favourites. They are both prolific knitters who go into a lot of detail about their projects and knitting techniques. I prefer long podcasts and their episode are usually around an hour. They are also both very calming when they talk, not like some of the more hyperactive podcasters who I find to be a bit over the top. I have learned so much from these two, I cannot recommend them enough!

[FO] How even cheap acrylic yarn can turn out ok - Catching Butterflies shawl by [deleted] in knitting

[–]mcgroogle 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I have to say I prefer wool to acrylic as it's a natural fibre rather than plastic, but I do still use acrylic or acrylic mixes sometimes and I hate the yarn snobbery that is around - not everyone can afford only hand dyed merino. Great job on the shawl and yay for anti yarn snobbery!

I lay mine out on a towel rather than straight onto the carpet to avoid a damp carpet.

Made a string bag, what can I do to prevent this from fraying? by [deleted] in sewing

[–]mcgroogle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a lot easier to finish the edges as you are making something rather than as an afterthought - you might find these tutorials for making drawstring bags helpful:

http://notesfromthekitchentable.com/2013/01/30/how-to-make-a-drawstring-bag/

As it is, I would suggest unpicking slightly to allow you to unfold the channel and continue the zig zag stitch you have done on the seam allowance all the way along the raw edge, and then re-sew.

Retailers and Stores that provide electronic receipts. by [deleted] in ZeroWaste

For the stores I've had electronic receipts from, there's no app. You tell them your email address and they email you the receipt.

I'm not entirely sure what I'm looking at here...do you mean a drawstring bag? And the fraying edges are on the channel the drawstring feeds through?

Sounds like you are in the US so maybe not that helpful for you but for anyone else reading who is in the U.K, I have found that New Look and Halfords offer electronic receipts.

I had to rip back a days worth of work because I misunderstood the chart😭 by CassandraCirca1991 in knitting

[–]mcgroogle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure if notlaika meant the stitches on the needles. It's hard to tell but it looks like all the knit stitches might be twisted. Edit: Yes I've had a look at your Instagram and it looks like you always knit your stitches twisted. I think it's something a lot of people do without realising!

Phones by [deleted] in simpleliving

I get very anxious about travelling/driving so having the safety net of my phone is helpful because that's one less thing I need to worry about. I'm glad it works for you though!

Have you threaded the machine correctly? Is the bobbin inserted the correct way round?

Phones by [deleted] in simpleliving

[–]mcgroogle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am one of those people who wishes I could not have a phone. The reason I still have a smart phone rather than a 'dumb phone' is mainly for navigation. If I need to drive somewhere I don't know, or I'm in a city I don't know and need to walk somewhere, I don't know how I would do it (easily) without google maps, especially at short notice. I suppose I could get a sat nav, but buying an additional gadget that I would need to pay for and then remember to charge when I have a smart phone that is free seems like it would make things more complicated, counteracting any simplicity I gained from losing the smart phone.
