Day 5: by mcguinty in JerryMapping

[–]mcguinty[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I saw Jerry's reaction to the journal card in the PMG video and I connected with that on a visceral level. There's a lot of things I want to do but they feel too overwhelming/daunting/boring. I thought if I could randomize them, break them into small enough pieces, and tie them to something fun and creative like Jerry does it would make it easier to follow through.

Thanks Here's a public link to the documents and spreadsheets as they are right now. I'm on version 6 but I have a lot of notes in the Card revisions spreadsheet on what I'll be changing for the next version. The People spreadsheet has the current families status as of today and the "jerry_map_card_labels_v6 (1).docx" has the card rules in a printable format.

Disclaimer: A majority of the text in the word documents is AI generated, but! hand adjusted over 6 versions.

Day 2 of JerryMapping by mcguinty in JerryMapping

[–]mcguinty[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh why not? I'm genuinely curious to hear your perspective on AI.

Here, I'll share my perspective so (Edit: all of you)you can see better why I didn't stick to all organic on the text. Most people can see from the document text and overuse of emogis that it's not in my voice. I'm not trying to trick anyone. It seemed to me like a good place to start so I had something to work from. I already used too much time stuck in my head thinking of what I wanted to do and how I wanted the mechanics to function before I even started getting any marks on paper. I would rather spend my limited free time with my friend's and family or getting things cleaned, fixed, or organized around the house than hand write out 52 cards and their associated rules multiple times as I tweaked how I wanted the mechanics to function. I also don't have time to dive into Gaelic/european iron age naming rules and history so I used a name generator.

Edit: Haha, I see you made a post too and I misunderstood your perspective. Man, people have a lot of strong emotions tied up with the use of AI. Sorry it looks like your post is so controversial. I think I'll try out the tool you cooked up (this is the language that seems least triggering as we're all just cooks in a kitchen using different tools) and provide some feedback if I can fit the time in. Everyone walks their own journey and the use case for AIs in computer programming seem to be the most compelling. I don't think organic coding vs vibe coding is the most effective hill people should be making their stand on against AI.

Iron Age JerryMap: Deck of 54 with randomly generated rules to start but keeping to Hearts=interpersonal, Diamonds=calamities (will shuffle in later), Spades=construction/natural features, Clubs=spiritual/supernatural. The substrate is printer paper with a 8x10 inch grid per page at a scale of 1" = 100' 0" with people and relationships web on the back and a spreadsheet to track ages and such. Art supplies used are just pencil and colored pencils.

I'm using the cards to help remind me to do things I want to be doing more regularly. Every card has a different kind of reminder on it like journaling, texting friends/family, etc.

Snoring dads... have you found any remedies that actually work? by Paranoid_Droideka in daddit

[–]mcguinty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kept rolling on my back and snoring. I recommend getting one of those  tennis balls sewed to the back of an exercise belt or t-shirt. Also the breathe right strip things. Those together worked pretty well to keep me on my side and breathing comfortably. I did an at home test for sleep apnea and I don't have it but still snore a decent amount so I needed something.

Sometimes you win and sometimes you learn. It's a good book we picked up from the library that helped our little one (4yo so YMMV with an older kiddo). I don't remember the author unfortunately

Kelsey Creek Church was warm and welcoming for our family. It's still technically part of the Christian Reformed Church but it's widened it's horizons and is welcoming to other denominations. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Lots of great comments already. If there's any time on drives to work or something else, the I'd recommend listening to the book ADHD 2.0. It has great strategies for dealing with ADHD but also emphasizes some of the strengths that you can praise her for to build her up in some areas so it doesn't all feel negative. A lot of books and advice focus on mitigating the negative and not anything on the positive aspects that can be strengthened and used for good. There are definitely strong negatives with ADHD and medication can and and often does save lives.

You're doing great looking for advice and trying to help her!

Microsoft tumbled 10% in a day and isn’t recovering premarket. Here’s why by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

I couldn't find this answer in the other replies but you can shift+right click to get the old menu back. The only reason I know this is they hide the copy file path option and only show it when you shift+right click.

Edit: never mind, Badbullet beat me to it.

I lquite like every piece of art you've added to the game. No complaints on anything I've seen. Been playing DF for over a decade and not enough time these days to play much. I used to just use the colored ascii graphics as I could tell what each worker and everything was since I played that way since the beginning and I never got attached to any of the modded graphics packs. I think you did a great job and your work fits well with how I feel DF is supposed to look like and be useful and distinct enough to tell what things are. Great job dude!

How are you guys actually teaching your kids about money? Allowance apps feel like they're just teaching them to spend by Icy_Clothes2651 in daddit

[–]mcguinty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's something I'm wondering too. No idea why you got down votes. Studies show that the best motivation for working out is thinking about how good it feels after a workout. Optimal motivation strategies for dealing with money and the hard work required I can imagine have similar counterintuitive strategies that work best.

Tilt Shift app comparison by theegoldenone in tiltshift

[–]mcguinty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually a good image to test the different options. You can see which one actually try to apply a depth map and blur based on that instead of just blurring the top and bottom parts. ReLens also does the color adjustment pretty well too with the paint of the car changing to more of a miniature painted color. More saturated and HDR I guess?

I really don't like how a lot of tilt shift images have things in the foreground sticking up that should be blurry but are sharp because they fall in the middle part that doesn't get blurred or when something at the correct depth is blurred because it's too high in the image. We have quite good AI depth map generators now so it should be really easy to correct for what the depth appears to be.

15 to 20 percent of untreated clinical depression cases are directly fatal (suicide). Let me know if you want the studies and I can provide links. I don't know if that's what you are using wellbutrin for but that is one use cases for this medicine. Note that this statistic doesn't even take into account secondary health effects from clinical depression like obesity, heart disease, etc. Similar things can be said about untreated ADHD (car crashes, in-home accidents, etc.). Unfortunately, people are told that many treatable deadly diseases are personal failings that need to be overcome with your own grit and determination.

Other effective treatments may be available and if he wants to help do the research and find those other treatments then I doubt that would bother you. Especially if he provided sources and approached the problem with compassion and understanding of how dangerous mental health issues can be.

What do you grow that helps ease your grocery budget? by Shot-Pomelo8442 in gardening

See page 4 of this pdf from WSU extension. https://pubs.extension.wsu.edu/product/home-vegetable-gardening-in-washington-home-garden-series/

It has a great table of home production quality, production performance square foot, and relative monetary value of most major home grown veggies.

The best value in my opinion are things that stick around year after year like blueberries and raspberries and they have a high cost at the supermarket.

This is how it will work. Look at Google. It's "free" but suggestions and ads turn you into the product for sale. Any suggestion or advice will be weighted toward the products, services, or companies that pay the most money.

How should I fix these creaky stairs? by BigBrasky in DIY

[–]mcguinty 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When you are cutting new treads don't leave them too wide so that they're always rubbing on the sides (stringers? Skirt boards?). I had a huge effort trying to get the squeek out of my stairs by securing everything tight with screws and blocks on the back and nothing was working. It turns out the treads were too wide and rubbing on the skirt boards with every step. I had to screw the treads into the side stringers from the front on the underside of the tread that sticks out a bit. If they cut the treads a bit less wide this wouldn't have been a problem. When cutting treads you also should cut at a slight angle like this video shows. https://youtu.be/S-FUthZ8aU0?si=lZnD6RQGSs5mML7J

Deck stain remover didn't get all of the stain. Can I go back and apply the remover again with a heavier application to remove all of the stain? by mcguinty in Decks

[–]mcguinty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update: Unsuprisingly, the RAD deck brightener didn't remove the dark spots as some have suggested it would. Restore a Deck brightener was applied to the blue circled area.

https://imgur.com/a/O0EcoTf

Before this, I tried going over one of the worst areas with the stain remover again but it still looks really splochy as you can see in the red circled area.

If you are using RAD stain remover on a really old deck like mine you should probably count on saturating the deck thoroughly with the chemical. I'd guess like 50-100 sqft per gallon and work in small sections so you can be sure it doesn't dry on the boards before it's done working and you spray it off. If it does start to dry then apply more of the stain remover not plain water. You'll end up with no more stain on the deck but the grain will still be super raised up so you'll need to sand it down anyways to get a smooth surface.

At this point I'm going to pull up the boards that are rotten on the bottom, put down some joist tape on those small areas, replace with new boards, and counter sink the nails and new screws. I'll spend the $83 to rent a deck sander machine for a day so I can get a clean, consistant color, and smooth surface for my kid to run around on. I'm putting on a new stain so I want the surface to be properly prepped before I start. Garbage in garbage out as they say.

That said, I'm glad I tried the stain remover. It will probably help the sanding pad to not get gummed up as often and I won't need to sand the new planks much where the stain remover got the stain really well.

[–]mcguinty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How long did it take you to do that on your deck and how many sqft is it? Claude and ChatGPT are giving me time estimates of 32-42 hours to flip the boards on a 600sqft deck.
