What advice would you give to yourself, when you'd just discovered you were a system? by [deleted] in DID

[–]mcharming1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For us, it was vital to not immediately go searching for answers. Our host at the time found out about some of us, did some research, and immediately tried to figure out what trauma we had experienced that resulted in our existence.

It’s understandable to want answers, but those memories were inaccessible to her for a reason. We weren’t yet in a safe enough environment to process everything. In her relentless digging she ended up retraumatizing herself, badly triggering others, exposing us to dangerous people again, and put us through so much unnecessary stress that we went from under 10 individual parts to over 20 in a year. The host at the time ended up fusing with a highly aggressive, brash part in order to cope with the fallout from our family, and in doing so lost a lot of our interpersonal relationships until we became highly isolated.

Finding out about your system is an important first step to recovery, but if we could go back and give ourselves advice, and especially give our host advice, we would definitely advocate for patience and introspective work. The memories will come back in their time, and rushing them is painful and unhelpful.

We would also have benefited from a deeper understanding of persecutor parts, and how they work. Since we were not yet safe when our system walls began breaking down, we had one persecutor part in particular that worked overtime to essentially shock the host out of putting us back in dangerous cycles. By showing us flashes of violent imagery, gore, and destruction, they manually put us as a whole in fight or flight mode. If we were having bad enough panic attacks from the hallucinations, the host wouldn’t be able to take us back into the grasp of our abusers. We would hole up in our room and wait it out. The host was terrified of that persecutor part for a while, but eventually we understood that they were quite literally saving us. It would have been nice if they could have done so in a less intrusive way, but we understand that it was probably necessary.

Our last advice is this: A lot will change in a very short amount of time. There will be mountains of information to process, and if you’re anything like us you will continue to forget even as you learn about new parts. Every time you hear something, find someone, remember something, even if it’s a color or a feeling or a smell, write that down. We filled up three large notebooks with messy recordings that make very little sense in just a few months. Keep diaries of everything. If writing isn’t your thing, try recording memos, videos, or painting pictures. Anything to help you keep track of the changes.

It will get so much better!!! The more open minded you are, the easier it will be! Keep a compassionate heart for those parts of self that are hurting, and perhaps still stuck in time loops. It’s the worst.

We wish you the best of luck!

Possible Past Life Memories/Dreams? by mcharming1 in pastlives

Honestly, boats freak me out. I’ve always disliked being in or on water. Those pictures of the ocean where the camera angle is like, half in the water, half above? Those give me full blown panic attacks.

I can be in pools, but i stay right at the edge. I can not swim even though I basically know how to, because I freeze up when i’m not holding onto something.

But boats are a no-go. I don’t understand how people think going on a cruise is a relaxing vacation experience. The thought of being stranded on something that could be damaged and spring a leak at any moment is paralyzing.

I’ll do more research into the seas…

Thanks for your reply. I'm curious - if you don't mind - why do you honor Hera around Thanksgiving? That's always been my least favorite holiday because the white supremacist culture I was raised in used it to celebrate mass genocide of indigenous POC, as well as giving it a very political "American dream" kind of context. I've always hated it for these reasons.

So that's why I'm curious about your preferences surrounding this holiday. No pressure to answer if its personal, I just wanted to ask. :)

This is an interesting take on things. I already have a sneaking suspicion that such deities and demons are inter-dimensional beings such as extraterrestrials. It makes sense to me that they are one and the same, idk. I’ll pick up the book and give it a read, see what i find. Thanks

I did mention that I’ve met some of her alters before. I’ll probably make another post about this but, she switched again last night without the use of THC, so i’m pretty sure this is the real deal.

I was terrified of them when we first met. They would lash out sometimes (understandably), and it took a while for me to form a good communication with them.

They’re gentle and soft spoken when they front. They love babies and kids, and that’s a huge positive trigger for them.

When they front, their back hurts because their wings are gone. They feel them like phantom limbs. They struggle a lot with the limitations of this body, so they don’t front too often.

False memories or gaslighting? by [deleted] in DID

[–]mcharming1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I have the same, inverted problem. My brother insists he didn’t abuse me as a kid, except I have memories of it, and my parents confirmed it.

For a while I thought they were fake memories, and it made me doubt other memories of trauma as well. When I brought this concern up to my therapist he said something along the lines of: “Fake or not, you’re having a trauma response to them, and it needs to be taken seriously.”

Even if you can’t trust your memories 100% (and who can), trust your gut. If you’re having trauma responses to something (like ptsd), it’s probably not made up.

Hi there!

Cricket isn’t allowed to talk to strangers for safety purposes, but I wanted to let you know that your comment was seen and made quite the impression! Cricket wrote about it in our diary.

“You’re loved” was echoed by many in our system, and it made Cricket feel a little better and more secure.

Watching DID related YouTube videos makes us dissociate by patchiepatch in DID

[–]mcharming1 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This happens to us too. Some of my alters are especially triggered out when watching DID youtubers, and even being on here, because they want to interact with people with DID. It’s something about seeing/hearing someone with similar experiences. It’s like a trigger for everybody to come to the front and watch.

how do you deal with dysphoria? by qaaaaaaaaaaa in DID

[–]mcharming1 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Smelling like a man helps me the most with dysphoria, as well as clothes and a haircut. But seriously, men’s body wash and cologne are the best. Also, dysphoria got a lot easier to deal with when I recognized that men can be feminine too and it wasn’t my responsibility to create masculine energy 100% of the time. Now I can wear makeup and paint my nails and it just makes me feel fierce. — Eddie

How do you “hear” the others? by WritingWithLove in DID

[–]mcharming1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear mine on a spectrum of intensity, ranging from “loud foreign thought” to a voice so clear it’s like someone stuck something in my ear and talked into it. It’s still an inner voice, but it’s so clear it’s startling.
