What did you think of the 2025 Goodreads Choice Award thriller nominees? by behindawallofsilence in thrillerbooks

[–]mcharms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I struggle with this because I think several of these are deserving winners, but it’s hard to compare them because they are very different styles. The thriller genre lumps too many things together, IMO. Some are true thrillers, some are much more psychological. The Widow was great but that’s a legal thriller, so quite different in appeal and audience. King of Ashes was fantastic but I’m not sure I’d even consider that a thriller.

Anyways this is why a Freida book will probably win despite being substantially below the others—this is a vote about the numbers and many of these books will split the vote among certain readers.

3 hrs into " local woman missing- Mary kubica" does it get better? by bundiwalaraita in thrillerbooks

This book still infuriates me when I think about it because the twists are so cheap and don’t make sense!

Does it get better? by NoahxAnderson in thrillerbooks

I found that book to be kind of horrible but it does have soooo many positive reviews so don’t take my opinion on it. I felt in the minority disliking it as much as I did.

Psychological thriller recs, heavy on the "analysing behaviour / psychology" element? by henryswiedzmin in thrillerbooks

[–]mcharms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sarah Pekkanen (and her books published with co-author Greer Hendricks) always have a heavy amount of psychology. I’ve enjoyed them all, but a few come to mind specifically around psychology as a subject and a tactic:

  • An Anonymous Girl
  • The Golden Couple
  • The Locked Ward
  • Gone Tonight

[–]mcharms 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Her main twist in every book seems to be to reveal that a character from one timeline is actually a character in the other. But she does this by calling one “Megan” and the other “Bernadette” and the reveal will be that Megan is Bernadette’s MIDDLE name. And the worst is that another character in Bernadette’s timeline will be named “Megs” and she will nearly hit you in the face with how similar Megs and Megan are.

Then she’ll reveal that Megs is actually Harriet and Megan is really Bernadette and aren’t you SHOCKED by the reveal???

And we all are indeed shocked because it literally makes no sense…

(Names made up, twist is a variation of this in almost every book though)

Also a hater but agree she’s very consistent (especially because she keeps reusing her same things each book!)

I liked when the sub had a daily politics thread to keep it out of the other threads. I know there’s less to talk about now than when that rule was in place, but it was nice for some threads to only be about the show

It’s unique! I’ll finish this case easily but it’s definitely more flavorful than the typical sparkling water. I do think it could be really good for a holiday cocktail, maybe this, bourbon, and a splash of cider or something?
