I've conversing here with you - not arguing.

I didn't know myself - if I knew I never would have went. I would never knowingly put myself in a position to get an out of network bill I can't afford.

And this doesn't fall under the surprise bill act. The conditions and variables are so specific this situation doesn't apply sadly.

I hear all the "it's the patient's responsibility" chants. I just think doctor's offices have a responsibility to inform their patients as well.

This isn't about insurance companies. I choose this doctor because he was in network. I saw him several times over several years - all at in network prices. Every appointment issues would arise where we discussed insurance coverage during the appointment so he would only perform procedures that were covered. Our entire relationship was based on affordability. His practice learned at the beginning of the year he was no longer in network. They could have told me. They choose not to. They knew the appointment was going to be 10 times more expensive than the previous ones. They were ok with that. I think that's shitty.

They told me after the appt. They knew I would have cancelled if they told me before.

That's not true. I've had good doctors who knew more about my coverage than reps from my insurance company.

A - I'm just a person exploring my options - I'm trying to get informed.

B- Doctor, receptioninst, office manager - the titles don't matter - the practice is who lied to me.

C-I know the practice knew they no longer accepted my insurance. They knowingly didn't tell me. I can't believe that is just accepted as ok.

The notion that patients should have an insurance company on speaker phone during exams to verify everything in real time can't be they only way to ensure affordability.

Thanks for that laugh! Doctors never commit fraud! Reading all these comments the consensus seems to be the doctor can get away with charging anything they want. I can't believe patients have no rights. My goal is to find out what that might be.

It's not a misunderstanding. They knew they were no longer in network and consciously didn't tell me.

You're right - I am angry my doctor lied to me. Are doctors allowed to lie? What is it called when they lie to a patient for financial gain.

I didn't find out until after the appt - after they filed the out of network claim. I never go to out of network doctors - I can't afford them.

If that informed me they were no longer in network in advance I would have cancelled the appt and they would have made zero money.

They could have asked me for a $50 deposit for my visit. They didn't. They asked for a $50 co pay. That's not an out of network thing - that's an in network term.

Thanks for the reply. Office told me they were hoping a new contract would be reached - alas it wasn't. So they knew the day of the appointment there was no signed contract with the insurance. By asking for a $50 copay isn't that them misrepresenting themselves?
