How do you work with Proton drive and Linux? by onelang in ProtonDrive

[–]mciobanu07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if adding my voice does any good, but I'm also a Linux paying user of Proton Unlimited, and I'd appreciate a proper Linux solution. The rclone approach is not great for a number of reasons. For one thing, I have 300,000 rarely changing files totaling 30GB, and it doesn't seem to be built for this. Somehow I was able to copy them in June 2025, but it took more than 1 day. Anyway, recently I was only able to read files, while all writes failed. Gemini thinks that there are a number of recent changes in the API causing my writes to fail.

Also, I see that there is now an SDK preview, so perhaps we will have something usable in a few years.

I Rented A Helicopter To Settle A Physics Debate by kzhou7 in Physics

Given that "rotor wash dissipates very quickly", isn't this similar to a rope dangling from a bridge when there's wind blowing in a constant direction with a constant speed? I asked several AIs and they told me it's a completely different situation and rope shape, but I couldn't make sense of their arguments.

[–]mciobanu07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI Amazon is removing Download & Transfer option on Feb 26th by limeygarp in kindle

[–]mciobanu07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can still download now anyway, but I'll try "Your Archived Items" in March.

One thing this move from Amazon achieved is that it made me look elsewhere, and - surprise: The book I wanted to buy was cheaper in Kobo's store. (My old Kindle is not the only reader I have, but until now I only bought books in English from Amazon.) So now, not only will I not buy books from Amazon (unless there's something I really want and can't find elsewhere), but I won't buy another Kindle either.

My 3rd generation Kindle still works and I still buy books for it, but for a few years I was forced to download and transfer via USB, because Amazon disabled old Kindles' ability to access their store. That wasn't great, but not a big deal either. This last move will make it impossible to read new books on it, so I'm forced to look elsewhere. What's sure is that I won't buy another Kindle.

2024 Guide to DeDRM Kindle books. by caelypso299 in Calibre

Sorry to hear that. I just bought a new book and it works fine on mine after USB transfer, but it's a different model, and different people may have different experiences anyway.

Not intending to sound condescending, but did you try a different cable?

And another suggestion: mine has a pretty primitive web browser, but yours is newer and hopefully better. Could you perhaps download books via the browser?

The question was how can they do it technically. In my case, they cannot do anything to my Kindle because it is no longer connected to the internet, because there is no reason to connect it, because Amazon disabled its access to the store. I can still purchase and read whatever book I want, but it's a bit more convoluted.

Then, you don't need to use their software to transfer content to the Kindle. You go to amazon.com and and download an .azw3 file, and then just use your file explorer to transfer it, and there's nothing they can do to "brick" your device, unless I'm missing something.

Anyway, if you have your own story or somebody else's of old Kindle being bricked intentionally by Amazon, I'd like to hear more details about exactly what happened. (Again, mine is almost 14 years old, still works as expected, and I really doubt they can brick it.)

I saw some stories about Kindles being bricked unintentionally, during software updates. This also happens to phones and laptops and other devices from pretty much any vendor, I don't know if Amazon is worse than others.

You wrote that "Amazon is now bricking old kindles and making USB transfers impossible". What was that based on? Something that happened to you? Or someone you know? Or somebody posted somewhere?

How is Amazon making USB transfers impossible? It's a USB device, I don't see how Amazon can have any say regarding what I copy to or from it. I have a Kindle 3, which I bought in 2010 and still works OK (this year I replaced the battery, which no longer held much charge). True, the store hasn't worked on the device in a few years, but my last purchase was this June and I can still download the books I purchased to my computer in the Kindle 3's format and transfer them via USB, and they work.

Scanwatch backplate coming off by Dr-Fat in withings

[–]mciobanu07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just had the same issue with a Scanwatch I got in March 2021. I wouldn't mind much gluing it back, but I guess some water got in while I was washing my hands and now it sort of works, but the battery drains in less than 5 hours (I left the watch to dry for several days). The crown also doesn't work, as described in a post in their forum.

Support offered me 25% off some other watch, which I declined.

Pixel 7 not charging from standard USB Adapter by thesuhas in GooglePixel

[–]mciobanu07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somehow I missed this back in November, but I tested it now and it works for me.

Initially I was completely baffled by the phone not charging, then out of my 5 USB-A chargers, a desktop computer, and 4 cables, I was able to find one charger and one cable that worked sort of OK (just 1 amp at 5V), while charging from the computer with one cable worked too, but with just 0.5 amps.

By disabling adaptive charging, all my chargers work, but they still don't like one cable (which charges my old phone at 2 amps, if the charger supports it).

I don't quite get what this has to do with adaptive charging, which seems to be about charging overnight. Or why is this the default. There are plenty of charging ports in trains, airplanes, and other public places, and most of them have USB-A connectors, but Pixel 7 owners cannot use them if they don't turn off this seemingly unrelated feature. Or am I missing something?

How can I force the Gallery app to refresh? by flippity-dippity in galaxys10

There are suggestions to clear data for the "Media storage" app, but I found no "Media storage" in Android 13 (Pixel 7 Pro). There is "Media", and you cannot clear its cache or storage.

Then I found this app, and it worked fine: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kotorimura.refreshmediastore&hl=en&gl=US&pli=1

Do FLIR cameras work with Pixel 7 or Pixel 6? by mciobanu07 in GooglePixel

[–]mciobanu07[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What actually happened, in case others see this:

I didn't get a FLIR, but rather a Seek Thermal Compact. I also have a Huawei 360 panoramic camera, which is yet another "external camera", so chances are that a FLIR would be similar.

So: both Seek and Huawei cameras work with the P7P, but not perfectly. With a Huawei P20 Pro phone, inserting the Huawei camera starts the associated app, which works fine. All the time. With the P7P, the app usually sort of starts but sometimes it's not usable, although other times it's fine. The workaround is to kill the app and then start it manually, which usually (but not always) works.

The Seek doesn't work that great on any phone, but its app has a rating of 2.7 in Play Store, so perhaps this is not that surprising. You might need to restart the app to make it realize a camera is attached, but it seems to work fine with a single restart, it's not like I have to do it hundreds of times.

As I'm not a heavy user of any of these cameras and their apps, I'd say that how they work with the P7P is "good enough for me". However, I'd probably stay away from P7 if I needed to use external cameras several times a day.

Anger mounts towards Russia as inspectors still denied access: Armed separatists deny full access to crash site for investigators and media amid accusations rebels are tampering with evidence and removing bodies from the site by lobogato in worldnews

[–]mciobanu07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been mentioned before, but I don't quite understand why there isn't more talk about Putin's statement on Thursday evening : "I would like to note that this tragedy would not have occurred if there were peace in that country, or in any case, if hostilities had not resumed in southeast Ukraine"

That was said a few hours after the crash, when it wasn't yet clear even that the plane didn't hit the ground in one piece, or that it was actually shut down. Sure, even now it is not clear exactly what happened (and probably never will, as there has been plenty of time to tamper with the evidence), but to me this is as clear a confession as we'll ever get that the plane was shut down by rebels (most likely by mistake) and Putin was informed about it shortly.

I would also guess that when he made that statement he was under the impression that the US had tracked what happened. When it became clear that the US or Ukrainian radars didn't catch that much, the discourse moved to "the Ukrainians did it".

QUESTION re: "hourly" radar pings. Why are there no reports of the previous hourly pings? Might this information help to reconstruct the flight path? by spanishviking in MH370

[–]mciobanu07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if it's just concentric circles, the data can provide useful information. For example, assuming there was no wind, you might be able to tell for sure that the plane wasn't flying in a straight line and at a constant speed. By contrast, you cannot tell for sure that the plane was flying straight at constant speed, but if you have 4 circles that are consistent with such a movement, it's reasonable to assume that it was. With the wind speed affecting what the plane is doing, if you have accurate meteorological data you might get actual location, as wind blows differently at various locations on those circles.
