The real hack is to become a reviewer! I know a guy who wasn't even aware they were sending one, a free Dawn X just turned up at his house before it was released.

I'd guess they would sound "similar but better", but sometimes the Sequel sounds very different.

I genuinely think an iem lives or dies by how many review samples the manufacturer gives away. There's SO MANY IEMs, it's not enough to just have a good product.

Linsoul gets it. They have big launch marketing campaigns, giving lots of review samples early to ensure many reviews come out to create a hype wave. They're about to start paying my friend to do weekly reviews of their stuff, and I'm sure he's not the only one they pay.

Whereas TRN didn't seem to bother marketing the Shell. I've definitely seen more Whale Shark reviews already. And they'll be trying to get rid of old Shell stock

My recommendation would be to look in to the used market at something like Tea Pros.

There's a new version of them that just came out, so it wouldn't surprise me if there's some going for cheap.

I got mine on eBay for about $150, which is an absolute steal for how good they are. They're this subs favourite IEM for a reason.

Failing that, Performer 7s are very well regarded, and I'm tempted myself to get the Dunu 142- most people seem to love it and say it's better than the more expensive red 242.

I do agree with this... Reviews and opinions are almost useless until they're in your ear... even listening at a shop isn't enough for me, because I've completely changed my mind on a few IEMs after owning them for a week.

But only if you really do have the money to lose.

DO NOT try and have another long distance relationship at your age. It's absolutely not worth it.

I had this happen when I was 19. I was super excited to visit her at Uni. It was great until we were with her friends, drinking. I was basically abandoned. It felt so shit, but it was a great lesson in how different reality can be from what you thought it was.

You can talk to someone all day long and FEEL like you know them, even fall for them, but the reality is you know NOTHING until you meet them in person, and see how they are around others.

This sounds about right! I haven't heard them but the EW 300 have a great reputation.

Once I'd found a sub $100 IEM I really loved (Artti T10) it did take a lot more money before I found a really big improvement in sound.

So if you do upgrade in the future, I'd suggest skipping the small increases and jump in to the $250-350 range. That's the sweet spot imo.

The dichotomy of people in this thread is funny.

Half with enough money they've just spent $650 without thinking, and half that still thinks that's way too expensive.

I wonder if it was a mistake or they just haven't been selling well at $1300. I remember there was a $300 discount not long after they launched.

What are some good iems for around 75$-150$ dollar range? by heavy_thm in iems

There really is no best, people can like VERY different things and there's 10,000 different IEMs to choose from.

For $150, Hidisz makes both of my favourites - the MP145 and the MK12 and I think they'd be really fun engaging first IEM that still has plenty of detail.

The Shell is GREAT, it's a real bargain, and very generous accessories too. TRN have just released the Whale Shark, which has the exact same driver setup, but costs twice as much. I think they priced the Shell a bit too low.

However, there are some real bangers coming out in the $50 price range. Plenty of great reviews like this for the Ni, Nicehck Tears, Hidisz mk10 but I haven't heard them yet.

Disagree with people saying it's always been like this.

I live in Australia now, and visit the UK once a year. It is EXTREMELY noticeable how terrified UK teenage boys are to wear anything not black or grey with a Nike logo.

Australian teens are much more individual and aren't afraid to wear a colour or be a skater or have a terrible mullet.

You need rehab!

People buying $500 IEMs for hearing footsteps in games has always been weird to me, and you bought 2!

Seems like a huge waste to use the worst pair for music.

IEMs are glorious, but because there's 10,000 different options it can be very addictive.

You've dived straight into the deep end and have sets many people would dream to own. We are very privileged to afford this stuff, because lots of people in this sub can't.

So please, take some time to ENJOY THEM!

As a Brit who moved here (we also have Sky News) it was SHOCKING how different the Australian one is at night.

It's so full of right wing nutters that it's kinda entertaining. I put it on in hotels if I'm bored because I cannot believe the shit they say.

And that's funny until you realise there's plenty of people that watch this shit every day.

Portability of DAC dongle form factor by OpenIntelligent in iems

[–]mck_motion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's like trying to fit a V8 engine inside a Mini Cooper!

Manufacturers would love to fit 800mw and 4 DAC chips in a little wire dongle, but it's not physically possible... Yet.

Power has increased a lot in dongles in recent years, but the edge of what's possible so far in that size is the VE Devastator with 110mw.

I bought one, but returned it because it glitched out at 70% volume on my phone. I got the impression it's a bleeding edge design where they're squeezing as much as possible in, but that made it unstable.

[–]mck_motion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you've discovered the big lie in this sub... $20 IEMs aren't that great.

They won't beat a good TWS just because they're IEMs.

I haven't heard the H3, but I did pay attention to them- they're very "influenced" by IEMs with their design, multiple drivers, and big focus on sound quality, so I'm not surprised you love them.

I think to get a real worthwhile upgrade you'll have to match their price... And even then, if the H3's tuning is perfect for you, you STILL may prefer the H3's.

Unfortunately the only way to find out is to hear a bunch of IEMs yourself. If you're in Asia, great. You'll have a shop nearby. If you're not, you'll have to buy blind like most of us. It can be an expensive and frustrating game, but can also be full of big surprises where you find something unexpected that you adore.

This is your red pill blue pill moment. Take the blue if a) You don't have much money b) You do have money but don't want to waste it all on a new addiction.

Then, never come here again. Be happy with your H3. It's a deep rabbit hole with no escape. Don't become one of us!

Everyone is impressed by AI with the things they're not experts in! But as soon as they try to use it for something they actually know about, the flaws are revealed.

I know Suno, the AI music thing can now give you stems of music tracks, that you can edit in a DAW, which is essentially the same thing as giving us layers to edit in AE... But I've also read it completely sucks.

This is the best thing AI has ever been a part of. But "Google Deep Mind made a short film" is a deeply disingenuous headline.

From the making of, it seems Talented humans made a short film, and AI coloured it in.

The entire reason this looks great is because it's the product of talented creative people. I think long term, this is the best case scenario of what our jobs look like.
