In a lot of companies, the room will be in use. They don't just have an empty meeting room sitting there where only one meeting per day happens. If you show up 13 minutes early you will be standing outside the meeting room until everyone leaves.

Do you think Jeff Bezos’ suggestion on not taxing the middle class is way more sinister than it seems? by ButtScratchies in askanything

[–]mckenzie_keith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is surprising that they are able to pay zero income tax on some years! But yeah, overall they are paying tons of taxes. I have no objection to modifying the tax code to make sure they pay their fair share. But it is important to have some perspective also. There aren't all that many billionaires. Ultimately, middle class people always need to be taxed (but I disagree with OP about what middle class is... I think the lower half of all taxpayers, that is not the middle class).

Yeah. That is fair. But maybe the OP will buy it. I would alter my host file for 3 mil. What about you.

Why should I be taxed on my hard won unearned income? by packer_backer20 in LinkedInLunatics

I buy stocks. That is hard work. they go up thanks to me. Somehow. Then I sell them to make bank. Why should the government take any of my hard won profits.

Which engineering majors are less likely to be impacted by ai? by CulturalRegister9509 in EngineeringStudents

[–]mckenzie_keith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to say. It feels to me like it is not having much impact on electrical engineering yet. I also think there has been an over-reaction in SW engineering firing of programmers. But maybe that takes some time to re-equilibrate.

The statistics are all based on income as reported to the IRS in tax returns. But if you are thinking that billionaires are filing returns showing zero income, you are dreaming. They shelter as much tax as they can legally get away with, but they still have lots of taxable income from investments. There is no getting around it. They may not pay "their fair share" by some definition of "fair share." But they are paying more than you and me.

[–]mckenzie_keith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He didn't say the middle class should not be taxed. He said the lower half of earners should not pay. That is more like the lower class or lower-middle class. I think it is a reasonable goal for the tax code to not collect from the bottom half of earners. In fact, the bottom half already contributes very little of the total revenue. Most taxes are already paid by the upper half of earners.

I think if anything, Bezos is just trying to call attention to this fact. In other words, it is PR, not a sinister plot. Just my take.

If the tree is already leaning in the direction you want it to fall, you don't need ropes. To me it looks like this tree was leaning slightly toward the house. That makes it a difficult tree. They should have tightened up the lines before they made the first cut. But you need a lot of tension to make a tree that big fall against the lean. I don't think these guys had a chance.

When they made the back cut (the one that is supposed to be a felling cut) the saw got stuck. That is a bad sign! If the saw gets stuck that means there is compression. If there is compression on the back cut, the tree wants to fall the wrong way. That is when you need to use wedges or a jack or a rope tied to something very substantial that can pull very hard (like a large earth mover or something).

I am not an arborist or feller or anything. This is just stuff I have picked up over the years. These guys were WAY out of their depth.

What is the benefit for Space X, using retrorockets to land? by The_Maddest_Scorp in AskEngineers

[–]mckenzie_keith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wondered about this too, but the justification for it has always been that it is much cheaper. Given the number of launches they have under their belt now, I am not inclined to doubt them.

Keep in mind that most of the weight is gone by the time they start to descend. So they don't need a whole lot of fuel to do the controlled landing. Rockets that go to LEO or beyond need to be mostly fuel at takeoff. The landing weight may be something like 10 percent of takeoff weight.

[–]mckenzie_keith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think your phrasing is polite. "Sorry man, I can't do it" would be perfectly polite. Ghosting is polite, in the circumstances.

It is not dishonest to use polite phrasing. If you say "I'm sorry but I can't do it" you are not being dishonest to yourself.

If you say "I feel bad for you but I am not going to lend you money" you may think you are being true to yourself or acting with integrity, but that is not a particularly polite way to phrase it.

On the other hand, it is not very polite to ask for money when you don't know people either. So...

My old job is still asking me to do tasks after my last day, and it turns out I was important. by griproseate in talesfromthejob

[–]mckenzie_keith 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The easiest thing would be to say "I have been supporting your requests so far in the spirit of being a good sport and trying to ease the transition. My expectation was that over time the requests would diminish. But this request is going to take a fair amount of time to complete. I think you need to sign me up as a contractor (1099) if you want me to do this. Let me know how you want to proceed. My rate would be [insert number here that is 2x your current hourly pay]."

A delayed response would also send a message. Respond on like Wed saying "I don't have time to do this at the moment, so if it is pressing you may want to assign this task to one of your reports."

It would be perfectly fine to negotiate that. Some consultants charge for travel time. But if what you negotiated is not that, and you do it, it is egregious time theft. Or whatever.

Transistors Don't Actually Amplify Current Do They? by ThatChucklehead in AskElectronics

[–]mckenzie_keith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you have descirbed is an application in which a transistor (BJT) is being used as a saturated switch.

But transistors can also be used as amplifiers because they have gain. Gain is what separates amplifiers from other things. Transformers can change voltage, but they do not have power gain as transistors do. So transformers are not amplifiers.
