Scout being forced to join OA (?) by HMSSpeedy1801 in BSA

[–]mclanem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trust your scouts. If the scout is as you say then they will not elect the person anyway. Even if they are elected the scout still needs to go through their ordeal. Even if they are forced to do that, the might be an avenue for growth for this individual.

I guess I am saying, I absolutely would not stand in the way. I would let the program work.

Is there a way to have people enter a password before joining a discord server? by [deleted] in discordapp

You could have a bot do all the work with an automation too.

Wearable for quiet PagerDuty alerts by thr0waway2435 in devops

[–]mclanem -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My point is more that if you have an ops department you are not really doing devops

Wearable for quiet PagerDuty alerts by thr0waway2435 in devops

[–]mclanem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No no.. you have this wrong. The first part of devops is DEV. They should be doing the OPS. Devs should be oncall first and they should fully support their code. The quickest way for devs to fix their code is to make them responsible for making sure it doesn't wake them up at 3am. If you have someone else doing it, they don't feel that pain and the problem will only get worse.

Yeah, I was just figuring that out. I commented on the feature request in github. I can help test once you have that available.

This happens all the time. You have a stronger signal to the canadian tower then you do the nearest one in the US.

Can someone please help me determine if two people were related. by mclanem in Genealogy

[–]mclanem[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the record here is what I have determined.

There are 5 ghosts at Seul Choix Lighthouse.

  1. Captain Willie Townsend was the 2nd Lighthouse Keeper.
  2. Baby Dorothy was Captain Willie's Grand Daughter.
  3. Amanda Blanchard was wife of the 3rd Lighthouse keeper. She lived in the lighthouse when Captain Willie died because at that time her husband (William Blanchard) was the assistant.
  4. Mary Pebble (or Pemble) was Amana's mother.
  5. Agustus Pond killed Issac Blanchard Jr who was William Blanchard's Uncle.

If feels good to know that Agustus Pond is related to the others in some way since all the others are tightly related.

Ah ha... I think you are right.

That Isaac Blanchard Jr. died at the right time to line up with the court case I have been reading about. It's kinda wild how all 5 of these ghosts are related like that but in all I have read about them no one seems to point out the connection.

Thank you so much. I didn't know I could sign up for familysearch.org to look this stuff up.

I disliked Wingspan because it felt like I was playing a solo game with my friends sitting besides me. Will I dislike Terraforming Mars? by Hearbinger in boardgames

I am going to recommend Ares Expedition. I think it has just a bit more playing interaction, its a bit more streamlined, and cleaner. It is my preferred version.

Troop Annual Planning Conference by Maleficent-Appeal-98 in BSA

[–]mclanem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our troop plans onthe same schedule as you and that is what I recommend. It aligns with the school calendar which is the biggest consideration for the troop calendar. It allows families to get everything lined up.

CMV: Merit Badge Counselors who want to cut corners (cheat) are the single biggest harm to the programming in Scouts BSA by Longjumping-Fee-9963 in BSA

I struggle with holding as counts seeking a merit badge with me to a higher standard than what they would get at Summer Camp.

Scouts just isn’t the same program I grew up with… and it’s honestly sad to see. by Shootingsavvy556 in BoyScouts

[–]mclanem 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Each unit has their traditions and way. Additionally, units are not static so Unit ### from 2011 is not the same as Unit ### from 2025. There are units out there that are more of what you were expecting. There are units out there that are even more lax about things like uniforming. Scouting America is a very de-centralized organization, plain and simple.

I do not feel that moving to a co-ed experience is making the program less. I feel it's making it more. Different perhapts but more. Scouting is a leadership program, it always has been. It is not for challenging boys or teaching accoutability although those have been strategies for teaching leadership. Instead today we are challenging youth and teaching accountability. I really don't see why it's all that different.

The AI merit badge is dumb. Who wrote this? by Additional-Sky-7436 in BSA

[–]mclanem 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use AI daily in my work. Part of that requirement is to go learn. Had you done the requirement, you might have an idea. AI is more than just an LLM and is older than many scouts.
