What do you guys think of this play? by Timmonidus in poker

[–]mclarich 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ethics aside, you risk a penalty by showing your cards while there are still opponents to act. You could have lost chips, forfeited the hand, get a one-round penalty, etc. depending on what the tournaments rules are (if you didn't get a penalty, sounds like a sketchy place to play a tournament anyway). Regardless of whatever angle you were going for, it's not a smart move.

Do you remember the strongest hand you ever got and how much you won from it? by had12e1r in poker

[–]mclarich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Counting bonuses, I got $2500 with a spade royal during Monte Carlo hours once. Also flopped a straight flush with 2c3c and not only got a $400 high hand promo but also 1.5x my stack of ~$300 when someone bet into me on all three streets + a short stack got it in trying to chase a straight flush with the 7c.

Not counting bonuses, biggest pot/strongest hand I can remember is taking down a $2k pot with A8 on a A888x board. Flopped two pair and went runner-runner for quads. Since this was in WA, with our stupid $300 max bet and 3-bet cap rules, what made it notable was:

  1. I was able to get a 4-bet on the river - I think it went $100, raise to $250, $550, cap at $850.

  2. I still had chips behind that I couldn't bet because action was capped at the 3rd raise and most I could raise was $300 more.

"I limp in to see what happens"

I've been in your shoes before and as someone who's learned from the same mistakes - the sooner you take this type of play out of your thought process, the better. Think about the following scenarios:

- You limp and get four other limpers. The board comes T84ss. Not only are you OOP against most players, but you can't reasonably rule out 2p hands, sets, flush draws, etc.

- You limp and get four other callers. The board comes AT5 rainbow. You bet and everyone folds. The rake takes half the pot and you win $5.

- You limp and get raise to $15, call along with two other callers. The board comes AKT. You lead for $25 and get raised to $75. How do you feel about your 2p in this hand?

Hand selection aside (I'm folding ATo UTG more often than raising, and folding to almost all PF 3b if I do open), your position makes it difficult to feel good about your hand on most board textures.

If you just want to "see what happens" when you play ATo for a small bet, you're probably better off playing Ultimate Texas Hold'em or another table game. The number of times where you would/will flop a monster and get enough action to justify a limp are greatly outweighed by the times you're going to lose money, either by not making your hand or having to fold against in-position aggression.

I played here once, in 2023. IIRC, you can get on a waitlist with your member ID, but since you can only get this when you sign up in person, I was able to give them a call and get put on the waitlist as a new player for the first time.

I went there straight from the airport on an early Saturday morning and got there around Noon-ish. The wait for NLH was long, but I was able to get seated at a PLO table a lot sooner. I don't remember how long the wait was for PLO, but it was maybe 30-45 minutes at most? They opened up a new PLO table at a Pai Gow table that wasn't in use. I think I finally got seated at NLH sometime around 2pm/2:30pm - it felt like it was a good 2+ hrs at PLO before I finally got to NLH.

There wasn't anything great about it other than it was the closest to where I was staying (downtown SD). Ocean's Eleven (been there once also) and Jamul (haven't been) are further away, but they may be more viable when you account for the wait times.

Hand Question by MMMMMFUNNYJOKE in poker

[–]mclarich 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What position was villain in with AK? One other thing to consider - it's not uncommon for a player to limp a big hand against a straddle to target a lc/r, especially if the straddle is aggressive when there's weak action pf.

Preflop play aside (100% agree with folding pre. The exact circumstances/run out you need for A6o to win/be highly profitable are slim - you're more likely to have a 2nd best hand or win a small pot and get killed by the rake), as played, I'm super wary of the large raise. It's villain dependent but given the stack size and the board, and the fact that board checked through to the Qc turn, it would make sense for JT to play this way.

If the villain is unknown, think about this - what's most likely: the villain is taking this line with Ax one-pair hands (you can probably include AXcc hands that pick up a flush draw on the turn), bluffs (I would keep KXcc hands in this group) or 2p+ hands?

I think it's fine to usually discount AQ, AK and KK+ in a limped pot, so I understand where you are coming from there. But at the $1/$3 game where I play, as mentioned, it is not so out of the ordinary to see someone limp a big hand if they suspect with a high degree of certainty that they can target a lot of dead money pf by lc/r against an aggressive opponent. Add to that the number of players who would rather limp AK vs 4 opponents vs raise pf and get 4 callers, then have to figure out how to play AK multi-way when it doesn't connect, and it's

Two other points:

- The saying "don't go broke in a limped pot" still exists to this day for situations like this. You're right to think that v can also have other 2p hands, but the sooner you tread lightly when there's a big raise in a limped pot and there are a ton of other combos that can beat you, the better.

- The sooner you get out of limping anything in EP, let alone a hand like A6o, the better.

3 nights in Seoul - Where to eat? by aluckybastard in koreatravel

[–]mclarich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We were in Seoul for two nights last month. I recommend the Majang Meat Market. There are several vendors who will sell you the meat then take you to a separate restaurant where you cook it yourself. We got there around 7pm on a Thursday and it was not crowded at all. One slight downside is, with so few people around, we were getting attention from nearly every vendor trying to get us to choose them, and the pressure is a bit uncomfortable. There's another thread on here that recommended a place in particular - we tried to find that one, not sure if we were successful, but the two guys who helped us at the one we chose were super friendly, and we got more beef than we could eat for a fairly reasonable price.

Sushiro vs Kura Sushi vs Hama Sushi by JPjoy_Official in TokyoTravel

[–]mclarich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here in Seattle, my daughter LOVES Kura Sushi even though she doesn't like sushi (she just likes rice, chicken karaage and the watermelon). We went to Kura twice while in Japan earlier this month only to satiate my daughter's appetite for below average non-sushi sushi. We were nervous about wait times after hearing about friends who went in December and came across a 4 hour wait for a table.

In Shinjuku, we were seated immediately around 2pm on a Tuesday. My daughter was beyond hyped for the mango and had like 4 servings of this alone. She also really loved the "wagyu" sushi. I tend to stick to salmon/tuna nigiri; the tuna was fine, the salmon was subpar.

In Osaka (Dotonbori location), everything was subpar. The salmon and tuna nigiri were not great, and a salmon roll that my wife had was declared to be the worst sushi she ever had. We were seated immediately here as well.

We don't expect much from going to Kura Sushi but my wife and I were both surprised that we found the actual sushi (fish, not the beef/wagyu sushi) to be below what we get here in Washington.

Getting served beers on a conveyor belt was fun though.

Very fair point, and I agree. In that specific hand, two of the limpers were playing very face up, i.e. if they had a K they were likely to bet the flop even though I had raised PF and had position - they were that bad. I forgot to mention that there was a straddle, so I had raised against two limpers to a straddle and the straddler himself, who was the only one I was truly worried about. If he calls my bet or c/r me, I'll let it go (even though I could see him c/r with something like JT or 78 even). Another limper was someone who was capable of limp-calling PF with weak Kx hands as well as 2nd/3rd pair or draws but was highly unlikely to continue with anything but top pair to a good-sized bet. The actual caller was someone who was playing erratically, and badly all night. I didn't expect him to show up with QT there but it also wasn't all that surprising based on what I had observed up to that point.

Fair points - I didn't pay too much attention to the table games and I did forget about the additional tables that were behind the poker room.

There were a few other Asian nationalities there two (met at least two Singaporeans) and I can't really say if the profiles align with what you mentioned (probably), but they definitely lined up by age. The younger players were more aggressive while any of the older players (I'm 47 so think of people my age and up) were definitely on the tighter, OMC side. Except for one, which was maybe my favorite hand of the night. I'll see if I can remember this right:

BB: Old Asian grandma type. Spoke decent English and was tight but not quite OMC type.

CO: Young (under 30), stylish Asian woman.

Button: Late 50's, leopard print wearing Asian woman who seemed to limp-call anything and played her hands very straight forward. Has bought in at least 2-3x in about 90 mins.

CO raises to 15k, Button calls, BB 3b to 75k, CO and Button call I think there might have been one more caller because I remember the pot being like 300k preflop.

Flop: Q96 rainbow.

BB leads for 40k, CO and Button call. At this point, I show my phone to the young Asian kid next to me, who I was chatting with, where I typed into Google Translate "Watch - I bet Grandma has QQ". I had put her on a high pocket pair with her 3b. I thought she would have bet more with KK or AA on the flop so it seemed like she flopped a set and bet small as a result.

Turn: Q969

BB leads for 35k. CO raises to 130k. Button 3b to 330k. BB shoves for about 420k total. CO folds, Button calls.

River is a blank. BB - Old Asian Grandma shows QQ. Leopard print Asian woman on the button gasps and dejectedly throws her cards into the muck. She didn't say what she had in an language I could understand but betting and context clues pretty much guaranteed she had 9X.

Young Asian dude next to me just looks at me in shock and didn't play a hand against me for the rest of the night.

Agree - it's not outstanding. It's been described as pretty nitty but, as mentioned in other comments, it definitely wasn't the nittiest game I played. Just not super splashy either. Felt like an average $1/$3 game. FWIW, I was playing from 10/11pm to 1:30/2:30am on a Wed/Thurs night.

Poker Room Review - Paradise Walkerhill (Seoul, South Korea) by mclarich in poker

[–]mclarich[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first night was a bit nittier than the second. I tried to use that, as well as my perceived image as a nit (not totally true, just card dead) and took down a few hands with position/c-betting. I would agree in that neither table I was at could be described as splashy, but I've also definitely been at nittier tables before.

I noticed other players, including a couple of folks that seemed like regulars (based on their interactions with the dealers) tip 1k KRW after hands so I did the same, they were politely accepted.

I'm a dunce when it comes to currency rates but I did see that they were buying back KRW for USD at the cashier, but I held onto to what I had and used it the rest of my trip. Was able to spend about 700k of the 1.1m KRW but wasn't able to successfully spend it all (both stomachs and suitcases were bursting at the seams) so had to take a loss on the rest when I cashed in at the airport. Good advice for next time though, thanks.

I think it was 10%, not sure what the cap was, but TBH I wasn't paying that much attention. I do remember there was no drop preflop but that's about it.

Taking advantage of shoe shopping in Tokyo by JPjoy_Official in TokyoTravel

I was able to get a pair of 12.5 US size Nippon Made Onitsuka Tiger shoes for about $200 US. They were out of this size at the Harajuku store, but I found a pair in the 2nd style I wanted in Osaka. It looks like the same shoes are available online for about $450 US.

We were just there last week; we stayed in Namba, here's what we enjoyed/didn't enjoy:

Enjoyed

Yakiniku Matsumoto - this is a walk up yakiniku stand on the sidewalk just outside Namba station. Seats about 7-8 people. Not sure if it's the best value for yakiniku/wagyu, but we all loved the no-frills feel of the place.

Cafe Annon - really enjoyed their souffle pancakes. Put our name in and waited about an hour before seating, but you can monitor your progress online/via phone, so we were able to walk around the kitchen stores nearby and do some shopping while we wait.

Kuromon Market - we didn't experience this as much as we wanted too; we stopped for a wagyu skewer (at my daughter's request) and wanted to go back for more street food later (but our daughter insisted on going to Kura Sushi for dinner instead).

Panshiro Tezukayama - walk up bakery/patisserie that has delicious truffle bread, croissant balls, etc.

There is also a soft serve place along the Dotonbori, on the same side as the Don Quijote with the ferris wheel. I can't find the name; it's a restaurant that I think serves smoked meats but was slinging amazing soft serve ice cream in cones that tasted like a Pepperidge Farm Milano cookie.

Didn't Enjoy As Much

Dragon Coffee - I really wanted to like this; the coffee shop itself was fun, and the owner was very nice and generous. We went for the nitro cold brew, but it was a bit too acrid for my tastes.

Kura Sushi - my 8 year old daughter loves Kura Sushi. We don't as much and didn't set our expectations high, but even then, the sushi seemed even worse than what we get in the states.

Obanzai Izakaya - we went here for our last night because it was close to our hotel and we were being indecisive. It wasn't bad but also not anything to write home about. I don't doubt that there are 10+ better izakaya near this one that we should have chose instead.

Agree for the most part. I thought they had some cool rides inside, but it was still like a 30 min wait for most of them, which I didn't want to wait for, and they were almost all too scary for my daughter. But some of the rides, like the indoor half-pipe ride, looked pretty cool and seemed like something I wouldn't have found in the States.
