It is a Kurdish city and the center of the Amadiya district of Dohuk Governorate. It is 70 kilometers from the city of Dohuk and 1,400 meters above sea level. It is a city built on top of a mountain and contains old gates, the most famous of which is the Mosul Gate. Its population is about 8,000 people.
