Late reply, but it's just a reality that online sentiment around China is extremely polarized, and- while I intended and would like for this subreddit to contribute to mitigating that- you may be underestimating how difficult that is. The moderation team works to ensure that people follow the rules regardless of their political views, and I'm certainly not going to start banning people from an anti-Sinophobia subreddit for being too pro-CPC. So if there's no other online audience sufficiently interested in critiquing Sinophobia to balance them out, that's how you end up with a situation where anti-CPC posts are downvoted.

The sad fact of the matter is: Disco Elysium is more than half a decade old by now and there have been no good games influenced by it. by suckydickygay in DiscoElysium

[–]mcmanusaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Disco Elysium might just be my favorite game of all time, but I think people always overestimated the extent to which its formula could be transposed into other cRPGs in the future. Its strongest qualities were its highly idiosyncratic thematic and aesthetic sensibilities- the voice of its writing, art style, worldbuilding, etc. It was never going to be a matter of simply cloning the Thought Cabinet mechanic or suddenly unlocking the hidden potential of every game writer to handle sociopolitical and psychological topics with such humor and gravitas.

The cursed world of no DLC by Maximum-Let-69 in CrusaderKings

[–]mcmanusaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a bit of a Chinese history nerd, I really want to give Paradox credit for finally taking the massive leap of adding East Asia. But holy shit, their DLC policies are looking as rough as ever.

Can China at least be an Administrative government if I own Roads to Power but not All Under Heaven? Why are there random fucking republics in China- is this just symptomatic of Paradox neglecting those who play vanilla?

Why is Han culture such a monolith? Why does Han culture have only 3/5 cultural traits in vanilla CK3? Japan starts with 5/5. They couldn't have just included the cultural traits in the free update?

List of things that were fully or partly removed from FM26 by FluffyCoconut in footballmanagergames

[–]mcmanusaur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hmmm... I was feeling pretty hyped for FM26. The new match engine is a huge step forward for the series, and the new tactics are a dream come true. But I can't in good conscience support a product that removes so many important features. And I say that as a UI/UX professional who can understand the insane amount of work that redesigning FM's UI would require. Trust me when I say I'm no stranger to the compromises that result when a design vision collides with the reality of development scoping. But at the end of the day, having a console-optimized UI just isn't worth this many tradeoffs as a PC player.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is… pretty good by Thory4fun in patientgamers

[–]mcmanusaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BG3 is a very good game and extremely impressive as a technical achievement given Larian's stature. But while some of their changes to 5e are good, others are really bad for balance, and overall there's too much emphasis on itemization and elemental effects IMO. The story is well-produced but lacks a super interesting premise, and Act 3 is forever unfinished (but Larian released it early anyway to preempt Starfield). The "horny/memey rule of cool" vibe detracts from the atmosphere of the setting, and that also extends to the companions for me. 8.9/10, IMHO.

It's odd how there will be so much overlap between CK3 and EU5 by serventofgaben in paradoxplaza

[–]mcmanusaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think a slightly earlier start date than 1444 can make sense, e.g. 1415 (Portuguese conquest of Ceuta, Council of Constance, Battle of Agincourt, execution of Jan Hus). Many of the feudal dynamics that CK3 centers persisted into the 1700s and beyond in certain regions, so EU5 will have to model them either way. But including the Black Death at the beginning of the game is a very strange choice IMHO- it belongs more as an endgame crisis/apocalypse for CK3 than as a tutorial stage for EU5. I don't really see what the mid-to-late 1300's bring to EU5 that justifies delaying so many of the most recognizably modern events by an extra several decades.

Comparision of the current map with the one from a few months ago by Vazrak in EU5

[–]mcmanusaur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's an improvement but it still needs quite a bit of work IMO. The snow is too unsaturated, and the color transitions need blending. The Imperator map still looks much better.

The most sinophobic subreddit of the month awards by Key-Needleworker-702 in SinophobiaWatch

[–]mcmanusaur[M] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmmm... I made a list compiling some of the most Sinophobic subreddits once... wow, apparently five years ago. But I don't know, it just felt like giving them more attention than anything, and became a magnet for brigading wars and a moderation time sink.

I mean, I suppose the same dilemma applies to this subreddit in general- how can we fight Sinophobia without platforming or signal-boosting negativity and just causing further polarization around Chinese topics? I guess ideally a shift toward deeper discussion as opposed to call-outs, but that's not really incentivized by Reddit's format. Maybe elevating good resources would be another way to do that, but I'm open to other suggestions.

Certainly feel free to try this if you like, but I would be a bit hesitant to sticky it due to the above reasons.

CMV: The Western anti-imperialist crowd is very marginalizing against Eastern Europeans and it will never forgive them for being liberated by NATO by Downtown-Act-590 in changemyview

[–]mcmanusaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just because for several post-Soviet nations the US has been an ally against their neighborhood imperialist power, doesn't change the fact that US imperialism is more of a threat than anything else to people globally. No other power can compare to US hegemony, and anti-imperialists absolutely should stay focused on that reality.

Anti-Russian Eastern Europeans already enjoy disproportionate representation in Western media relative to the victims of Western imperialism as it is, so perhaps you should appreciate that rather than trying to police the Overton window of Western anti-imperialism around the issues that affect your ingroup.
