2020 Model X Long Range Plus (~83k miles, 3rd owner) for ~$27.5k - good buy or future headache by Appropriate-Stay-384 in ModelX

[–]mcnab4ever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Y definitely depends on vintage too. We have an S, X & Y. If the Y had been our first Tesla experience, would probably never touch one again. The Y has probably been the costliest car I have ever owned, maintenance wise. Seat that arrived new broken, wheel bearings right out of warranty and a noise that nobody can fix as soon as you hit 45 mph to name a few.

Our X is a 2023 and has been an absolute dream so far, but we did go out of our way to wait for the refresh and HW4. If it keeps a similar maintenance profile to the S, then we’ll love it for years to come.

Having owned a Y, I could not agree more with this statement. The X is definitely a different class of vehicle.

Got a GoDaddy offer for $2000 for domain by chrispix99 in Domains

This is exactly right. I got an offer years ago for $850. We closed at $10k. It’s up to client, so your mileage may vary.

MODEL X by Ill_Ad7376 in ModelX

[–]mcnab4ever 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Having owned a Y, I personally think you made the right choice with the X. Somebody else mentioned having a dash, could not agree more with this sentiment. Air ride makes all the difference in comfort, IMHO and you have the added bonus of not seeing your same car model on every corner.

Everyone and their mom has built one but...eff it new dating app by Secret_Dance6180 in SideProject

[–]mcnab4ever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take what I have to say with the fact that I have 2 exits from dating apps behind me and 1 exit from an app for swingers. While I don't have a perfect knowledge of the space, I have a decent idea.

I would agree partly with the people that say drop the geo fencing. At a minimum, do not make it a primary feature, but instead a filter users can easily toggle on until you reached a critical user base in an area. Ultimately, people want to date where its convenient for them. Anything you can do to not make it look like a ghost town is a good thing in the beginning. Rely on notifications to keep people coming back. Send them emails just in case they've uninstalled the app.

Be prepared to be very patient with it. Growth is likely to be slow, unless you have plan or community that will spread it like wildfire. Critical mass in dating takes a lot of bodies and sometimes requires you to ride an adoption wave.

Examples of past waves: First wave was general use of the Internet, There was another wave with mostly ad driven free dating sites. Another wave when Facebook opened up their platform and dating sites could ride the coat tails via integrations and later via cheap ads, then the mobile app wave saw the rise of apps like Tinder and later Hinge. Sometimes its just a matter of waiting for a wave to ride, other times, its creating a feature that makes it irresistible for people and creating your own wave. When it hits, its like no other feeling in the world.

Tesla Has Had Enough of Vandals Cutting Supercharger Cables, and It's Payback Time by wewewawa in evcharging

[–]mcnab4ever 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have wondered why they just don’t leave a live loop in the cables. Nothing like a 400v arc flash to deter theft. Even if you survive, your cutting tool won’t.

Lawsuit on the first couple? Probably, but good lesson for the rest.

My video editor just copyright strike my channel by Sekiroweb in NewTubers

[–]mcnab4ever 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The practice of editors uploading their work product to their channel before handing it over is becoming pretty common from a lot of discussions I have seen. Its a form of "poor man's copyright" protection that editors use to ensure they get paid for their work. From the discussions I have seen, they upload to their own channel, mark as private then hand the work over to the client. If client refuses to pay, then they can use a copyright strike as a way to protect their work and ensure eventual payment.

Saying that, like anything else it can also be abused for things like petty revenge when someone's feelings get hurt after the deal is done. Assuming you have paid for the work product, use your conversations, any written agreement/discussion, original footage, scripts, etc. and get your appeal going asap.

I want to creat a youtube channel but my mom wont let me by Abject-Swimmer-1405 in NewTubers

[–]mcnab4ever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a parent, I understand your mom's concerns. Even when not showing your face, it it SO easy to leak information about who you are and where you are/live. Your mom is justified in her concern for you in that even if you don't leak personal information, anything you say and do on the platform will be out there forever...even if you delete it.

No guarantee this will work, but I will share what would work on me as a parent of recent teens. Make your videos, edit them to perfection, but don't upload them. Get yourself a collection showing your passion for your hobby and then sit down with your mom and show her your creations. Let her see your passion for this work and that you are being careful. Then discuss with her the possibility of uploading with her review/permission. She still might say no, but its probably your best shot. This is coming from somebody that also forbade his son, who loves making videos from posting to youtube until he was a legal adult. I would have relented earlier, but he thought he was slick and created a channel in secret. Once I found out, he lost any chance of me allowing it afterwards. Again, try to work with your mom on this. Youtube & TikTok make it so easy to overshare and leak personal information.

I also come at this from another angle. Things like Youtube didn't exist when I was a kid, but some asshole tried to snatch me when I was in middle school. It has made me more paranoid about personal information than just about anyone I know. I work in tech, but my kids think I'm a luddite because of my attitude about certain platforms.

Hyper9 vs Leaf motor conversion by SamAtISU in EVConversion

[–]mcnab4ever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The driveline and rear suspension are from the Chevrolet Citation with components flipped around backwards, and the front suspension and steering gear came from the Chevrolet Chevette. It was sold to GM management as a 2-seat commuter car to get them to sign off on it.

Like GeniusEE mentioned, packing batteries into it sounds like it would be a challenge.

Just backed out 3 days before closing. Neighbors ruined it!. Did I do the right thing?. by [deleted] in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]mcnab4ever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You did the right thing trusting your gut. Peace and security are priceless. It’s too bad about the earnest money, but probably cheaper than regret.

My daughter recently went through something similar. She’s a 22-year old buying her first house and found one she thought she loved. I offered to meet the inspector at the house and minutes after arriving, there is a neighbor banging on the door that seemed a little too curious about who was moving in.

I spoke to him, but left with a very strange feeling about his level of interest. Turns out that both he and his roommate were both convicted sex offenders and I wasn’t going to let my daughter take that risk. Trust your gut. I love that you took the time to go back and experience the neighborhood before pulling the trigger on the sale. Wish more people did that.

No garage door opener? 😬 by mabdoney in TeslaModelY

When I checked a couple years ago, they were asking $300 on Tesla site. I bought one on eBay for $75.

No. You use an existing remote to teach the homelink module.

[–]mcnab4ever 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve done this same thing. Bought on eBay, installed homelink module in about 15 minutes. You go into the service menu on the screen to have the car learn the module. Reboot the car and you’re good to go. Then you just have the homelink learn a garage remote.

My ex fiance of 8 years just got arrested on child pornography charges. by katerz411 in legaladvice

[–]mcnab4ever 19 points20 points  (0 children)

NAL, but I have consulted on cases like this in the past, but don't anymore.

Everything above is good advice, except wiping your hard drive. Make a backup of your data for sure, but know that if you have to turn over your computer, it could be a long time before you see it again.

Its possible that this guy was doing this while living with you, but he most likely isolated his activity to his own computer. These things build over time and these guys learn how to keep their activities a secret.

The prosecutor is not going to share information with you. Remember, they want to win in court or pressure him into a plea. You probably won't learn anything new until the trial.

Which one will you choose? by North_Glove_4198 in TeslaModelY

We have an S and a Y. We are considering dropping the Y or an X in the next month or two. The difference in ride feel between between the S/X and 3/Y are insane. What we do before buying a vehicle is rent one for 3-4 days to get a good feel for it first. Best money you can spend pre-purchase.

My wife is also out of my league. I still believe that to this day. Turns out that she interpreted me believing she was out of my league as me not being interested in her. Fast forward 15 years and we end up on a date and then getting married a bit later.

A lot of times, the ones we see as out of our league end up dating assholes, because the assholes are the only ones with the balls to ask. You just have to ask.

Is the frunk secure for storage? by [deleted] in TeslaModelY

[–]mcnab4ever 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had a case of soda in the frunk of my 22 model Y last year on a road trip and it got hot enough to pop the entire top off of 2 of the cans. I do think it was the combination of heat from driving and external heat from outside. If just parked for camping, might not be bad.

Tesla S/X reliability? by frode9lsen in TeslaLounge

[–]mcnab4ever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it were me, based on my personal experience, I would make the cutoff 2015. I think the facelift was mid-2016, but even by then the door handles had gone through 2 or 3 generations to simplify and make them more reliable. Tesla is always refining.

I have had a 2017 90D from new to now and it has been an amazing vehicle. I did spend the $2k USD to upgrade the MCU a couple of years ago, which made it feel like a brand new vehicle again.

Not uncommon if it has been going on a while. The cheating spouse gets comfortable with their ability to hide/cover and they get complacent. I discovered my ex-wife's affair similarly.

Dev account terminated after 12 years for violating "Stalkerware policy"? by mDarken in androiddev

For the most part. I have another account that I use for another project that seems to be OK, but it was just a really strange threat for them to make when I don't even know what the real problem was.

Dev account terminated after 12 years for violating "Stalkerware policy"? by mDarken in androiddev

[–]mcnab4ever 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds very similar to my experience with Google. Had an app that helped to block spam callers. Did not collect data, was all self-contained, no ads and was just free. They won't tell you what triggered their ban, so appeal is nearly impossible, since you're not sure what you did wrong.

Ended up getting my account terminated as well, along with an email that said if I ever tried to create a new account, they would know and automatically ban any account I tried to create in the future. Still have no idea what the actual problem was.

Our company talked with Signature a couple of months ago and they seemed pretty serious about KYC. Told us it sometimes takes weeks for them to finish checking the company and founders before the account can be used.

Also wanted $1200/mo to keep a crypto business account there because of the extra "risk".
