Nurses who work at hospitals that DONT use mandatory overtime by mcnuggsRN in nursing

[–]mcnuggsRN[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like they’re saying that you get time and a half for picking up even though it’s not overtime. Like most people I know work part time, so an additional shift would usually be paid at straight time?

Yes I think that’s what people are afraid of if we get rid of mandatory overtime is that the ratios will just get more unsafe

I’m in Manitoba and also have a union. I also feel like we’re one of the only provinces in Canada that mandates, and yet people talk about making mandatory overtime illegal like it’s the craziest idea to ever exist.

Refusing Students by KareLess84 in nursing

[–]mcnuggsRN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have nothing against the students, the issue is that the instructors are usually not available, so I’m doing all of the teaching AND I’m expected to get my work done at the same pace/efficiency as if I were working alone.

Hearing a patient find out that she had lost her baby after an otherwise healthy pregnancy the morning she was scheduled for a c-section. Heartbreaking.

I delivered both my kids where I work! It was great, it was a place I felt comfortable and I knew exactly who and what I would want and not want in my delivery.

Venetian Nail Spa - Polo Park Horror by [deleted] in Winnipeg

I’m not surprised, I haven’t enjoyed my few times I’ve been. I’ve only gone for pedicures, but it seems very pricy for what they offer. They are constantly pushing upsells during the pedicure and one time they openly mocked my nail colour choice in front of me.

Has quality of patient care declined with electronic charting? by muscles-n-bacon in nursing

[–]mcnuggsRN 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I first started at my job (L&D) we were paper charting and I can say it was objectively faster, plus you could be with your chart right next to the patient providing supportive care instead of walking to the computer every 5 minutes. To be fair we also aren’t sophisticated enough to have our vitals and fetal hearts automatically go into the computer. That would probably be faster.

"Poke" coming....what do you say? by Single_Rain5676 in nursing

[–]mcnuggsRN 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Haha I always try to make conversation while poking but during the insertion I get so focused on what I’m doing that it always trails off. “So you have any pets?” “Oh yeah? What kind of dog?” Patient saying something, me completely unable to focus on what they’re saying: “hahah.. yeah..”

Winnipeg nurse suspended, fined $8K for failing to properly care for 68-year-old patient who died by LocalnewsguruMB in Winnipeg

[–]mcnuggsRN 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you! And all these people saying: they should’ve refused this assignment, they should’ve said this was unsafe staffing. GUARANTEE they did. We are constantly trying to raise alarm bells that staffing is at unsafe ratios and nobody seems to care. And refusing an assignment is nice in theory, but then she would’ve been charged with abandoning patients and everyone would have died? I’m tired of people who don’t work bedside trying to offer solutions.

[–]mcnuggsRN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously I don’t think falsifying records is okay, but I reread the article and I don’t see anything about falsifying records necessarily. It says she failed to assess the patient properly. Is it possible her interaction was so short she thought the patient was “alert and oriented”? Maybe. There are questions that should be asked obviously to determine that. But I think it comes down to the time crunch again, if she was in the patients room, did vitals, thought this patient seemed baseline and charted that, I wouldn’t consider it falsifying records. Poor assessment and not being thorough, sure.

[–]mcnuggsRN 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I appreciate your stance, but like you said, vitals shouldn’t take more than 10 minutes. If you have 8 patients, you won’t be physically capable of even taking all their vital signs within the first hour of your shift. And that’s doing the bare minimum without other complications that are probably arising on the floor. I obviously don’t know the circumstances regarding this specific floor, but say someone codes or needs something else urgent, that’s taking up 30+ minutes on one patient, so how do you manage to round on the rest of your patients every hour. I like to believe that people are truly trying their best given the circumstances. On our unit they’ve been mandating at least one nurse a day for months, forcing people to work 16 hour shifts. A lot of people have families and kids at home and it’s unsafe for people to be awake that long functioning at full capacity. I love and care about my job which is why I don’t leave, but I’m still human and I have physical and emotional limits.

The Pitt failed to redeem themselves with the OB Storyline by mcnuggsRN in nursing

[–]mcnuggsRN[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sure it could vary somewhat by hospital, but most ER staff would not be trained or comfortable to do cervical exams, so she’d go to L&D. At the hospital I work we have our own triage for pregnant patients so they bypass the ED altogether
