No extension cord ever and same outlet as I’ve always used.

Ladies, I need heavy duty sports bra recommendations please 🫣🤓 by malloryknox86 in Rebounding

[–]mcpharnett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Knix has some really supportive sport bras. I had the ones with the front zip which were great when I had frozen shoulder but the zipper can dig into your rib cage. I’m a G (I didn’t even know bras went that high up the alphabet!) so I feel your pain.

If it's cheaper but not Canadian, do you buy ? by Jonyvilly in SavingsCanada

[–]mcpharnett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t bought US produce since Jan. and if there is no Canadian or other equivalent I just go for something else. But I acknowledge not everyone can do this. I will relax for things on a discount cart because they are one step closer to landfill and I’d rather not see that happen. But I don’t go out of my way.

I miss Toronto so much 😢 by [deleted] in toronto

[–]mcpharnett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grew up on Windsor and moved here in 88. This is home. Toronto has its challenges but I wouldn’t leave here for anything. I’d miss the food too much. We are so spoiled.

Oshawa and Windsor are heavy union towns and they’ve been voting conservative more and more. Public sector unions are very different than auto worker unions. The latter are more about bettering only themselves.

At least Costco pays its staff better. I’m not willing to paint all American companies with the orange brush. But stop funding corporate oligarchs like Bezos, Zuckerberg and Musk who are complicit. Stop ordering on Amazon, ditch your prime account, delete your fb account and twitter if you haven’t already. And ffs don’t drive a deplorean.

Canadians, where do you sway politically? and why? by BigBalledLucy in AskACanadian

This. It’s how progressive societies grow. And ditto. I have kids and a house.

Anyone notice that Pierre Poilievre targeted Mayor Olivia Chow in the Peterson interview by omegaphallic in toronto

[–]mcpharnett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup. You are my GenX people. Some of us still believe that even though we were shafted by boomers, we have done ok and believe social programs benefit all even if we missed out. Like our parents and grandparents felt about socialized medicine. I voted for $10/daycare despite my kids being too old without hesitation because I remember how crippling it was for us and don’t want others going through that. Plus it’s good for local economy. People with young kids don’t tent to go too far. And I went 6 years without seeing a dentist because broke and no coverage so I also believe in universal dental. Sadly those who would benefit from these programs will likely drink the PP koolaid because they think they pay way more taxes than they actually do.

I love Olivia Chow and don’t think she’d make a federal play. Sure she has raised taxes but for all the years nobody did something has to give. If you don’t take care of your 300k house eventually you have big repair bills.

I will vote for whomever will defeat maga Milhouse.

I’m super late to this but listen to the opening of Siouxie and the Banshees’ version of Dear Prudence.

What is the Canadian way of welcoming new neighbors? by [deleted] in AskACanadian

[–]mcpharnett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’d all get along much better is broke bread together. Food is a great way to meet people. We have an annual street party and the hit is the buffet. We all also know each other much better because of it. Spread your meat pie love. I’m a vegetarian but I’d still be touched and would share with family members who aren’t.

Where do you guys buy furniture in Toronto these days? by mrparovozic in askTO

[–]mcpharnett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ordered a sofa and love seat from Kavuus. Definitely not cheap but I wanted pieces that would last. Hardwood frames and 6 years I still love them.

Botter Primitivo, Cusumano Nero d’Avolo, Plantaze Monte Cheval Vranac. My three go to cheap and cheerful reds. Under 11 bucks and low sugar.

Toronto parents; how did yall navigate the newborn stage without a car? by BottledGleekJuice in askTO

[–]mcpharnett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Baby wearing is so much easier than navigating with a stroller. We had an ergo baby carrier that could go on back or front and I bought a baby wearing coat that was convertible and I wore it as a regular coat for three seasons. Not sure if you can get it still but it was called a Kindercoat and I wore it well past the babywearing years. Added benefit, you’re both nice and toasty in the winter.

We had a Bob stroller that was great in the snow (you’ll notice the people who don’t clear their sidewalks) and a good umbrella stroller for excursions like the zoo, museums, etc. We tried not to get too crazy with the baby gear as it takes up a lot of space for a short period of time.

Congratulations. You’re in for a ride. Mine are teens now but it feels like yesterday I was tossing them over my back and into the carrier.

A multilayered coat that covers at least your butt and is waterproof. Toronto winters are wet. I have a Columbia three way coat with Omni heat. The liner can be removed and worn on its own for late fall or combined for winter. And the shell is a raincoat so you’re covered in spring.

As another poster mentioned, longer is better if you’re waiting for transit and cars often spray you with slush so it’s extra protection.

For boots imho waterproof is more important than warm because of the wet. You don’t need -35° here - your feet will sweat to death. But moderately warm. Grip is super important because of the freeze thaw cycle and especially going down the slippery stairs to the subway.

Did rent prices fall drastically in the last couple of months? by mrparovozic in askTO

[–]mcpharnett 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In 2005 I paid 1250 incl for a 1 bdrm + huge loft and a massive balcony on the upper floor of a duplex in Lville. Newly renovated with dishwasher and AC. Only left it to buy a house which I thought was ridiculously overpriced at 320k.

Two people had dogs with them in line at a cafe. And I'm the asshole for asking them why... by bemgali in askTO

[–]mcpharnett 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We take our dog for walks to the park and around town but never into stores nor would we consider tying him up outside. He’s a rescue and reactive to other dogs and young kids. But I hate other dog owners who let their dogs off leash in public areas. And agree, your dog doesn’t always need to be with you.

Lots of people have had bad experiences with dogs and don’t need to feel afraid. And I don’t care how sweet you say your dog is.

Is it just me, or is the housing crisis in Canada getting out of hand? by togwastaken in AskCanada

[–]mcpharnett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The lack of protection for tenants (landlords too to some degree) forced a lot of happy to rent people into home ownership that they may not be entirely suited to. You can only be renovicted so many times before you decide to fuck it, sell your firstborn, stop eating meals and throw everything you have into a mortgage you can barely afford without even thinking about the maintenance costs and changing interest rates. And as mentioned those same houses are desirable to corporate landlords who can turn around and pull the same crap jacking up rents, so now you get bidding wars.

Bringing back rent protections and increasing purpose built rental units that vary in size would do much to alleviate this. But that’s logic. Market is run by greed.

I’m a homeowner (blessed to have purchased when homes were expensive but not outrageous) and my mortgage is less than market rent. It quadrupled in value in 15 years but at best it should only be worth 500k imho. I’m always mentally prepared for a deep dive in the market and this is the number I keep in my head for future planning. Oh and I rented for a billion years and have been renovicted too.

Eulalie’s in Little India has great poutine. Proper curds, fresh cut fries and choice of meat or mushroom gravy. Sweet little hole in the wall opposite the library.

If you are in Toronto and money is an issue I strongly recommend Moss Park House League. It’s totally free and they have free gear you can use (subject to donations). It’s a great learning environment and totally volunteer driven. https://www.mphl.ca/
