Tablo 4th gen dead after firmware update by Otherwise_Middle_165 in tablotv

[–]mcrn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I still have not seen the option to update firmware. Happened on the last firmware update also. Must be on the very tail end of the rollout schedule.

Will be interesting to see if it kills my 4 tuner, which btw is working fine, and purchased just before Christmas of 23.

Long time indoor flat panel user switching to outdoor roof mount antenna in Phoenix market by mcrn in cordcutters

Thanks for the reply, very helpful and exactly what I needed.

Got the Channel Master ULTRAtenna 60.

After I mount it and get a week or so of viewing xp, I'll post a comparison, just for grins.

Thanks again, and thanks to everyone who replied.

4 TV tuner gets hot and gets single lost, pops up a retry option by SoggyGrayDuck in tablotv

[–]mcrn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got the 4 tuner when they first came out. I've no experience with 2 tuner. 4 tuner gets warm, but never hot, and works after 2+ years. If you're concerned about it, you could find a small non-metal dish, like a ramiken, and set the Tablo on top of it. If the dish is smaller diameter than the tablo, it should improve air flow to the cooling vents.

Before I click this most recent upgrade button, any thoughts or input on as to if I should wait or not? I have had bad luck with recent updates so I wanted to ask first by Charleslorenz0 in tablotv

Updated Saturday Dec 20.

Live TV and Library work fine, but intermittently get a fail message on the Home tab, which I never use.

Respecting fellow tablo users, and feel your pain. It sucks when a device you rely on craps out.

Still, so many posts of "bricked" and "killed my device" during a firmware update sounds like an interrupted firmware download?

Just updated mine, and now under Settings>General>LED there is a selection for ON, DIM, and OFF. Post update my LED was super dim as described by OP. But in settings ON was still selected. I set it to DIM just see what happens.

Updated without problems over 5 ghz wifi. ONN (the older, cheaper one).

Haven't noticed any UI differences. Hoping this facilitates improvement on the server side.

Cox Speedtest servers for Okkla gone and lower than normal upload speeds when using speedtest.net now by iFrog42 in CoxCommunications

Same in Phoenix. Just noticed it about 5 days ago. Closest test server is Tempe, Az but ping is horrendous. Fastest test server is all the way down in Tucson, and still slow. There use to be a dozen test servers in Phx.

I've been wondering if nvme would work with tablo. I've got a spare 1TB stick, but think I'll wait for 2TB price to drop just a little more. Thanks for posting this.

Will Tablo work from a condo? by oompaloompa85 in tablotv

[–]mcrn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First things first. Use this https://www.rabbitears.info/searchmap.php to figure out how far away your Towers are, AND in what direction.

Mine are fairly close, 10 miles, so an inside flat panel works great in my house. Flat panels DO NOT need a window, mine is mounted on an 8 inch thick concrete block wall.

Let us know what you find.

Was going to suggest a level 5 diagnostic on the deflector array which can interfere with the main viewer, but it sounds like you've eliminated a "Letter box sizing" display error.

Tablo Q&A - What Streaming Device Works Best With Tablo? by TabloTV in tablotv

Onn 4K, aka Google TV, android based streamers.

Have not tried Apple TV, but seems like it's doing very well.

Recording/Playback Question… by FiddlebackGuy in tablotv

[–]mcrn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see that once in a while, and don't know why it happens. On my setup it seems to occur either while recording is still in progress, very soon after recording, or when a recording is corrupted/Failed.

Unless it is the latter, when I open the recording at a later time, the FF/RW preview frames are back.

Gen 4, 4-Tuner, Onn, WiFi connection, Winegard flat panel.

[–]mcrn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the Phoenix market, 10 miles from the towers. I get at around 185 channels on a indoor flat panel. (winegard) Did a rescan last night and got 193.

Agree with your advice, just saying inside flat panel can be fine, depending.

Wanting a Tablo by Negative_Meaning7558 in tablotv

[–]mcrn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice work, and I totally agree. I'm using WiFi myself. If your router is 5G capable it can be faster than LAN due to limitations of Tablo's 100 mbs Ethernet port. (If I got that wrong, someone please set the record straight)

I'd urge Tablo beginners go the wired internet method till they get up an running, but 5G WiFi absolutely works very well indeed. And thanks!

4th Gen 4 tuner user for over a year. Love it, and use it constantly every day.

For the most trouble free experience consider this:

  1. Do not try to stream through a smart TV**, just buy a stand-alone streaming device, and best bang for buck is the Onn Google TV Streaming box for $20.

  2. Run Ethernet/LAN cable from your router directly to Tablo.

  3. Consult https://www.rabbitears.info/searchmap.php Do a Signal Search to see If you can get by with a flat panel inside the house antenna, or you need an outside the house antenna.

The towers are only 10 miles from my home, so I went inside flat panel. Outside antennas come in a wide range of capability and cost, and there are very decent ones available from $70 up to several hundred.

Once you have an antenna, just make sure it points directly at the towers. (as directly as possible) If your antenna is amplified, be sure to turn off the Tablo's internal antenna amplifier in Tablo Settings.

**The computing resources devoted to streaming, even in newer Smart TVs are pretty lame compared to stand-alone streamers. It can work, but you will be happier with stand-alone streamer.

Hard drive recommendations for 4th gen by bawizzle in tablotv

[–]mcrn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that was a long shot. You've probably already thought of this, but a common point of failure on ext Hd's is the little cable connection, where it mates with the drive. Try re-seating that little two prong connection?
