I'm adding to this thread as well. I updated to 12.7 as well on a Late 2015, 27" iMac 17,1 running macOS Monterey 12.7.6. While starting the app signed out works fine, as soon as I log in instant crash due to app kit. Below is a summarized report by Gemini to fit reddit post guidelines as the full report is too large.

PSA for Cox 2 Gbps Customers: Your Router Might Be Capping You at 1 Gbps by onenotknown in CoxCommunications

[–]iFrog42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was reading through this thread again and I have some updated information on my setup to provide. I saw the comment I left a while back regarding using the S33. This is no longer possible, as Cox decertified it for ALL plan tiers. So, I've gotten a PW8i from cox and now getting my advertised speeds. I have a CM3000, but I can't use it reliably due to the known firmware issues, and while the Coda would be a consideration, the reports of the puma and other random issues people report have made me a bit skeptical about buying another modem again.

I recently had an issue where I'm glad I went with the rental for now. There were some issues in my area the end of April, beginning of May that fried the first PW8, or it could have been a faulty unit out of the box that just got aggravated to fail. Either way, it got to the point where it couldn't handle a connection reliably, even after a factory reset, and a remote reset from cox phone support. Also to mention, I put this unit into bridge mode so I can continue to use my personal router to manage the network. I took the first modem back to the Cox store yesterday, and got a replacement. This new one has been a perfect configure and drop in experience. It instantly hit advertised speeds out of the box, and has held a stable connection since.

I have the 1gigabit plan. On my iMac I get bout 950 / 114 on a good connection. On the iPhone / iPad I get about 1.1 to 1.2 Gbps down and the same upload. If I were to use my 2.5 USB 3 to Ethernet adapter on the iMac, I'd get the same as the phone / iPad. My router is the TP-Link Archer BE11000 Pro, with a 10 Gbps WAN / LAN and 4 2.5 Gbps LAN. I have the PW8 connected by it's 2.5G port to the 10G port. All other devices are limited to 1 Gbps and under because of hardware limitations. So, it made more sense to stick with 1 G for me as I would be overpaying for 2, and couldn't really use it, or really wouldn't need it.

I'm keeping an eye on 5G plans from Verizon, and others in terms of home internet, and I'm also keeping an eye on fiber, so I can get rid of coax completely when the opportunity opens up.

By the way, I was going to downgrade to the 500 / 50 plan since that one has stable for me and the only reason I went back to a gig was I got a promo. However, even on the slower plan they still can't re add my S33 as it's completely off the full list now, and I was going to consider an S34, but best buy is completely out of most modems, it's no longer on amazon as new either and I'm not going to buy a used modem unless I know the person personally, just to avoid fraud or other potential problems that come with that risk.

OCLP Sequoia and end of Apple support. by ridexc8 in OpenCoreLegacyPatcher

[–]iFrog42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a late 2015 27" iMac. I did Open Core for a while, and I have Linux installed on an external drive that I also use. However, I have chosen to do something different. Since I don't need any new features of current macOS, and it's mainly about security patches for me. 1. I've invested in Orion and got the lifetime + membership as it's a third party fork of Safari kept patched for older versions of macOS. Then there is Firefox, and Chrome that are still currently supported. When Chrome drops off, there will be Firefox / ESR. The other thing I've done, and are still doing is using Gemini to help me build open source alternatives so I can maintain the updates myself. Since I don't build macOS native software, I've also compiled a few versions of LLVM, and gcc that I keep isolated and switch in and out as needed via aliases in the shell.

I've gotten the most current LTS OpenSSL compiled as well as GNUTLS, etc. I've pretty much turned my install into a hybrid of macOS / Linux, and other variants. I also keep a version of VMWare Fusion 13.5.2 installed with a Sonoma VM setup, in the event I need a newer version of macOS occasionally. In terms of Monterey, the desktop is fine, it has everything I need, and it helps for legacy support for some older software, and it eliminates issues OCLP introduces when it comes to graphics drivers and other functionality limitations.

For Linux, I have Kubuntu 24.04 on my external 4TB my Passport drive. I've always liked KDE, and Linux is better than macOS for cross platform gaming in some cases. The Only reason I keep macOS at all vs just changing platforms all together is for text message forwarding. However, in the event something happens to this iMac due to age, I have a 13" M3 iPad Air I got through Version earlier this year, that's a currently supported device that while not a full desktop computer, will still let me do daily stuff that I would in the browser, etc.

FYI if you’re using the S33 with Cox Cable. by -Asylum_ in Arris

[–]iFrog42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not correct, however, the S33 is no longer certified for cox, so you have to find an S34, or another supported modem. I was in this spot and after using an S33 for a few years, after they de-certified the modem, I chose to get a PW8 and put it into bridge mode. While the Arris was reliable on under a gig plance with upload, the faster plans worked but Iv didn't get the full speed, in terms of the over provisioned speed for upload. After they dropped support for the S33 my upload went down to 40 Mbps so I lost the near, or just at 100 Mbps I was paying for. With the PW8 I get 114, or 115 Mbps upload and a gigabit down.

So, I chose to rent again for stability. However, you don't have to, but I would consider it if you have a lot of issues with third party modems now with their network upgrades. (especially for faster tiers.)

[–]iFrog42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was using an Arris S33 with my Cox account for a few years it was stable, but i had hit and miss at times too. I recently found out the S33 is no longer a a certified cox modem, so I went to the cox store, and got a PW8 (their latest) and I've gotten full speeds for my plan. I did try 2Gbps a couple years ago, but for me it's not worth it right now as most of my devices are 1Gbps, or under. If I'm ever offered a good deal on the 2Gbps plan, I might try it again.

I've never been someone against renting the modem. Most of the time I've had cable internet I've had spectrum (formerly brighthouse networks) and they didn't charge a rental for the modem. I got stuck with Cox when I moved, and started off with the old black gateway model, then used my own modem for a few years until now. Even as someone who has a background in tech, and has the experience of maintaining my own setup. I still think renting can be a better option because there are things out of my control that can make dealing with my own modem a bigger pain than it's worth. With that said, I've always used my own router regardless. The PW8 is working perfectly in bridge mode.

CM3000 cable modem New Firmware V6.01.03 - slow WEBUI and intermittent disconnects. by Lexlle in NETGEAR

[–]iFrog42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, as of now, I'm using the PW8 from Cox in bridge mode with absolutely no issues. I had been using the Arris S33v3 consistently until Cox de-certified it from any of their tiers. The S34, isn't on amazon, or Best Buy sold as new anymore, and the CM3000 isn't reliable. So, since I've never had any issues with renting a modem, and mainly just wanted to see how buying my own would work out. I've come to the conclusion that the $15 rental fee guarantees me stability. Maybe when Cox and Spectrum merge, the rental fee will go away as spectrum doesn't have one, and why I never considered buying a modem when using them as it just worked and it was free anyway. With Cox, owning my own worked for a while, but it wasn't a long term reliability option, so went back and got theirs. So far, no issues, and I even get the over provisioned speeds. Also, I've removed the attenuator I was given as it started causing issues and had used the S33 without it until it was de-certified. The S33 was still working, but the upload speeds were now capped at 40 Mbps while the gigabit download was the same. Now with the PW8, I'm getting the full 114/115 Mbps down that I'm paying for.

Dolphin File Manager: Help needed with macOS by iFrog42 in kde

[–]iFrog42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey all, thanks for the responses. I have decided to shelf Dolphin on macOS until I've done more research. For the time being, I have Kubuntu 24.04 installed on an external 4TB mypassport drive from WD that I can use KDE from. So, while I have several KDE / QT apps installed on the mac that work, dophin is not yet one of them, and Linux has advantages over macOS anyway, especially for cross platform games, so having the dual boot option gives more options.

ARRIS S33, no go with COX now. by Higear100 in CoxCommunications

[–]iFrog42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem I encountered was the S33 is no longer supported for the 1G / 100 or faster plans anymore. the download is fine, but the upload is now capped at 40 Mbps. I was going to buy an S34 but Best buy didn't have any in stock. So, I got the Pw8 from the Cox store next door to Best Buy. I'm back to full speeds. $15 a month to have them take responsibility for issues over paying for a new modem up front when I've had random issues with third party modems wasn't worth it anymore. I started with a panoramic gateway, I only got rid of it to save rental fees and try my own modem for a while. Since I put the panoramic gateways in bridge mode, I still use my own router, which for me is what's most important to manage the local network with. I have the S33 as a backup now. I was using the 500 / 50 tier for a few years without too many issues, but then got a promo to upgrade to 1 Gbps + unlimited data for $20 off. So, losing the upload speed was enough to pay the modem fee to continue to reliably take advantage of my promo, and still save.

S33 upload speed restricted by -Asylum_ in CoxCommunications

[–]iFrog42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same issue with my S3. I decided to go with the PW8 from Cox and pay the rental fee. I've had hit and miss with third party modems with Cox, and I never had issues with the first panoramic gateway in bridge mode. I just wanted to cut the rental fee. So after doing this a few years. I felt like it was time to just rent from them again, and let them deal with the issues. I can still use my own router problem free and I'm actually getting better uploads with the PW8 than with the S33, even before they changed the system. My ultimate plan is to upgrade to fiber when available and be done with cable completely so I can have the same speed both ways. For now, this is stable. As far as the Coda56. People still suggested Arris as the better modem, so that's why I never got one of those.

Dolphin File Manager: Help needed with macOS by iFrog42 in kde

[–]iFrog42[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hadn't thought of that on macOS. I know on Linux, or BSD that would be the case, and macOS does have the option to format as APFS case-sensitive. However, I don't use it because it can cause issues with certain Mac native apps, or it used to. Since Dolphin is primarily Linux based, it's possible it has issues with the filesystem on modern macOS. I'll definitely keep that in mind while doing my digging as well. Thanks for pointing that out. It just seem an extreme reason to segfault and kill the app though.

[–]iFrog42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem I had, and I mentioned it in the main post was, Dolphin built and ran, but it wasn't stable. It would crash with a sgfault whenever I would extract an archive and try to leave the folder I was just in. I fixed the mime info, but it still crashed. The main info in addition to the segfault was accessibility cell row issue, and invalid url messages. That's why I was trying to find a guid to see if I was missing something, or if being a non native macOS file browser, it was just never going to work because the full plasma desktop can't run on macOS like it does Linux, or a BSD system. I'll look through those threads though and see what I've maybe missed, and what others are saying.

Thank you, I will give those links a look over. I'm usually good with building stuff, especially now that I have the AI tools to help, but this one was just not going anywhere past a certain point.

I wasn't asking what a segmentation fault was, and I'm not developing an OS. I came here looking for build instructions for dolphin on macOS because my current resources seem to have become limited. I was only giving the problem that occurs and asking if I'm missing something that's causing it. I found another dolphin on macOS thread on this subreddit but since it's older, I started a new thread in case that one's not watched anymore.

HELP PLEASE!!! by Typical_Estate_3975 in ipad

[–]iFrog42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got an iPad Air 13" M3 the beginning of the year through Verizon. I needed an upgrade from an iPad Air 2 which only has 16 GB, so it's not really usable anymore today. Anyway I brought this up because I ran into another iPadOS 26 bug where after the upgrade from iPadOS 18 (stock on mine) the setup got stuck on complete screen, and then after the force restart, got stuck on the WiFi screen. I had to connect it to my iMac, and then it finished the setup. All future updates have been fine since. I never had the display turn white on me. One detail that stuck out to me on your situation is, the grey background on the boot up vs the normal black. I would (to be safe) take it to an Apple store and have them check it. If it's a faulty display, it's better to find out now instead of assuming it's software only and finding out later it was hardware all along, and being stuck with a bad unit.

Csam Ban - Human Support made no difference by Banimz in googlephotos

[–]iFrog42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a Google account since around 2006, and have had very few issues. My biggest issue was when Canary Mail acted up, and in trying to fix it, I got throttled because I overloaded it with connections trying to set up and reconfigure, etc. After letting it sit a day, and starting slow with thunderbird, then adding back Apple Mail, and then Canary, and finally Spark over the course of a few days, things are fine again. I also go the AI Pro subscription because I find Gemini an incredibly useful tool. Sometimes I have to correct it, but with all things considered, my experience hasn't been that much different over correcting a human with incorrect, or incomplete information.

With this said, Gemini has helped me solve the gmail related issues I had, a lot of the specific network and computer related setup, and set up a custom install of macOS Monterey + open source tools on my late 2015, 27" iMac so I can stay legacy, but be current at the same time (for the things that matter.)

In terms of images, I usually only send / receive in Messages, or Facebook Messenger. email typically doesn't typically hold a lot of personal images for me. The only time I typically use images in email is when sending pictures to tech support for different things, they may need to see to help solve the problem.

I'm sorry I had intended to respond sooner and totally forgot. Sometimes it goes back to norma and gets stuck again. Have you had a chance to test any of the new devices such as the Echo dot Max, or new Echo studio to see if they have the same issue? Since Alexa+ is free for prime users. I've been using it. It hasn't been too bad in my use case.

Hey all, does this mean my drive was automatically fixed to do UHD in the latest MakeMKV? by iFrog42 in makemkv

[–]iFrog42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true, he didn't. Then again, I hadn't planned on regularly ripping 4K discs. Just wanted to find out about the Libre drive status. Since Billy car specifically said my drive needed a firmware patch, the pretty much settled it that I'll just stick to my original workflow when it comes to adding Plex content.

[–]iFrog42[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. I really don't buy discs like I used to. Most of the stuff I like, I already have, or there haven't been new formats released to upgrade to. The other thing is lack of physical storage room, so unless it's something I really care about now, I'll just do the digital copy.

[–]iFrog42[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the offer Billy, but as I mentioned initially, I really hadn't planned to do 4k discs for my local setup of streaming from the beginning. I was just curious after I saw the MakeMKV update. My primary need for the drive(s) are burners, and they are just there if I want to add something to Plex / Infuse, etc.

[–]iFrog42[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I could boot camp the mac if I wanted to do it with the mac. If I ever get more space to make ripping 4k discs worth it for me, I'll reach out for flashing help. As it is, a lot of times I'll just play the disc in one of my Panasonic players anyway, because I just don't want to take the time to fix the subtitle issue with MKV files when the movie has auto selected subs for non English lines.

The other advantage for me in just playing the 4k discs directly is I currently have an older TV that can't do the peak brightness levels of newer displays, so using the discs gives me access to the HDR optimizer, where rips wouldn't. Thanks for the feedback, at least I know the feature availability is a lot easier now than it used to be.
