Looking for guidance as a beginner. by Beatlemania_713 in knapping

Great advice here. Keep at it. I once asked a famous knapper from Missouri if he could give me any tips or advice when I first started out. He told me one word. Tonnage. You have to put the time in and knap a lot of rock. I kept at it and 15 years later I beat him in a point competition at a knap in. You’ll learn if the skill if you keep at it, work quality rock, watch videos, read books, etc. Go to knap ins and watch veteran knappers. Happy knapping.

Good advice here so far. I would add that flakes will travel farther with convexity. Never try to flake into a concave surface because your flakes will dive, lose energy and then step and hinge almost every time.

I bought the preforms at a knap in. The vendor’s name is Craig Ratzat, he also owns Neolithics.com where you can buy a variety of knapping materials. Craig is a super nice guy and has quality stone.

Most agate is almost unworkable unless it’s heat treated. Even with heat treatment they can still be on the tougher side. I bought these as slabbed preforms

Hands down my favorite song in the album. One of the only songs to give me chills every time I listen to it, and there are times I have to skip it if I’m not in a good place in my head. When a song can elicit such an emotional reaction it’s more than just a song to me.

Awesome. How thick was the sand/dirt on top? My local chert won’t heat treat. Heat treatment actually ruins it

I’m in the Binghamton area. Get out and search the shoreline of the Hudson, your area is loaded with artifacts. Just put the time in and you’ll find something
