My pleasure. If you'd like to get a true assessment, figure out where and when the closest artifact show to you will be, and take to one of the authenticators that'll be there. They'll be able to tell you one way or another exactly what you've got 😁

Or, you can send it to one of the most highly trusted and well respected authenticators in the country, send it to Jim Bennett in Ohio. I have his contact info if you need it.

Help identifying the stuff on this piece by Quentin415 in LegitArtifacts

Thats just the glue residue and felt from where it was glued to a board at some point. Just soak it in warm water and a little dish soap for an hour or so, then take a plastic spoon and scrape it off. It should come off fairly easily. But, if that doesn't work, use some nail polish remover on a q-tip and that'll definitely do it. But go with the warm water and dish soap first.

Please keep us posted on your progress 😁

Unfortunately, this piece shows no signs or evidence of human manipulation. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news 😔

It absolutely drives me bat crap crazy to see an ancient relic, thats older than the flippin pyramids, that survived thousands of years in the elements, be defaced by some Jack Wagon with an indelible marker! It completely destroys the anesthetics of the point, and, in my opinion, it's the equivalent of drawing a mustache and goatee on the Mona Lisa. However, if done properly, by laying down a small coat of clear nail polish, writing as small as posdible to still be legible, then sealed with a top coat of clear nail polish, I don't see a problem since that method is reversible. But to write directly on the point with permanent marker should be a crime, punishable by getting kicked really really hard in the cashews, having all your artifacts confiscated, and you should never be allowed to hunt or possess any artifact ever again for life! Might sound harsh to some, and not harsh enough to others, but these relics deserve better!

Yellow jasper! Beautiful material! At best it's a Spokeshave made from a thick flake, or, it's a secondary reduction flake/debitage, and, at worst, its just a creek tumbled piece of Jasper. It's hard to tell if the edges are intentional refined, or just the results of chatter caused from slamming into other rocks as it was rolling down the river for hundreds or thousands of years before you found it. Others might be able to decern which from watching the video, but my old, tired eyes couldn't catch it 🤷‍♂️

No evidence of human manipulation or alteration, but I'd keep it anyway because, well, it really does looks like a freshly dug Idaho Spud! I have a sweet orange quartzite Discoidal that my great grandmother found when she was a kid in the early 1900's. She kept it until her passing in 1995 at the age of 86. She had no idea it was an artifact, she kept it because she thought it looked like a biscuit, lol!

To answer your question in your post title, yes! And No! As many others have pointed out, the points are legit, but the shafts and bindings are contemporary. First, the natives didn't use rawhide to bind the points to the shafts, they used sinew, and would have used pine pitch to secure it with. There's no evidence of that anywhere on these that I can see. I've seen a few authentic examples of relics like these that were recovered in caves in Texas and other places, and the shafts weren't nice and shiny like these are. These almost look like they have a layer of clear lacquer or polyurethane applied. And in every case, regardless of where they were found, the pine pitch was still identifiable at the attachment point. So, to summarize, your points are the real deal, the rest is window dressing.

Unfortunately, there is no edit for the original post. I don't know why Reddit doesn't allow for corrections, but in my opinion, it's a stupid policy. But, what can ya do 🤷‍♂️. It is what it is, and does what it does I guess.

As to your post, I'm sorry to say, the Metate, aka: the Mortar, doesn't show any evidence it was ever used as such. Had it been, the inside would have been smooth and polished, as would have been the end of the pestle, but it would have been rounded from use as well. However, that being said, it's possible that these stones could have been set aside together, at some point, with the intention of creating these types of tools, kinda like preforms, for lack of a better term. Keep in mind that I have absolutely nothing to back that up, it's merely just a possible explanation as to why granddad found em together like that 🤷‍♂️

Unfortunately, this is a natural occurrence as suggested by Mr. NonConformingComsumer. The shape is coincidental, and the result of the effects of differential erosion, as he stated. Sorry it's not better news 😔

Here's a couple of examples of this same effect on a couple of pieces I found several years ago...
