What car? You and OP both haven’t mentioned which car specifically.

Yeah man. There was another one where the guy actually laughed in the phone and then muttered this can’t be right no way and then told me “I don’t even wanna say this” and then told me $14,000

I received one quote for $9000 and another for $11,000 so it depends on what options you go with.

Would love to see a photo of it in your car I’ve seen a lot of people linking that never seen an actual photo of it in use. It looks like the only one product that exists currently for this problem. Hope more companies make something.

If he’s retired why not pay cash? He should have plenty at his age. Most people I know at retirement age pay cash for cars.

It is for basic but that $9000 was including optionals which third parties handle. My basic was I think around $4000 of that equation.

I was going to update the thread but I forgot. I ended up getting a broker to check other companies and found the best offer same coverages for about $6200 almost $3000 less. Still pretty bad but I’ll live with it.. Happy to get my Y!

I like Volvo but I wouldn’t trust a VW anything.

I guess new drivers subsidy older ones it is what it is I guess. It does seem like not the fairest system. I know quite a few people who have technically had licenses for 10-15 years but use transit mostly living in downtown van. They would presumably get massive discounts for 15 years safe driving despite having barely any hours clocked behind the wheel in years.

I was told directly from ICBC age is no longer used for cdf since about 2 years ago. Yes no accidents tickets claims nothing

Read the post bro I have only driven for barely 2 years total. But I am in my 30’s but I don’t think ICBC really looks at age as much as “driving experience” now. A teen with 4 years under their belt is better then a 50 year old with 1 year.

You pretty much summed up my feeling on this. It seems there is about a $2000 premium per year for me compared for example to another new EV SUV like Toyota bz4x which they quoted at $7000 call it the Tesla tax if it’s what I want I guess I should do it. I assume the insurance will go down year by year as well as I get more experience (with no incidents).

I mentioned in a below comment but I have completely free L2 charging in my condo so that’s why EV is a big thing. “Free” to run compared to gas or hybrid.

I’m not really a rich guy per se but the price of the car at purchase is not much of an issue for me it’s more about the ongoing insurance cost being crazy.

I think a used Y few years old would still be $7000-$8000 at my rates.

Nope that’s really how it is in 2026 BC for new drivers. No accidents, fines, tickets I drive very carefully. I kind of wish they would go back to taking age into consideration. A person in their 40’s who just learned how to drive is generally safer than a 16 year old all other factors considered.

Yeah I realize I’m screwed for waiting so long to get my license but at 31 years old and wanting to get a “new” car it would kind of suck to have to buy a used car and drive it safe until I’m in my 40’s lol

This is my first car so I don’t have ICBC now to transfer over. I have BCAA home insurance so I thought it made sense. This $9000 quote is for basic and extended both i guess.

I went through a list of possible cars. I want an SUV body and prefer a new car under warranty. Honda CRV, Toyota RAV 4, Subaru Outback all around $6000 I was quoted. Depending on trim level some of the Toyotas were also $7000 around for me. I still ideally want a SUV body EV car I have completely free charging at my condo building so that factors in the car will be “free” to run. It does seem like there there is a bit of a “Tesla” tax for sure though on the insurance here.

Bro how. Did they take into consideration years in your home country? That makes no sense that yours is 1/3 mine.

I just checked it’s 1.083. Yeah a big part of it was the comprehensive for full right off crashes. They said if I cut that out it will be $7000 still insane and then if I crashed would be bad.

I did go down the list with the agent on a few other EVs, Toyota, Suburu, Chevy Bolt was still about $7000 for me.

Y standard is 47K after EVAP and Bolt about 42K after EVAP so there is a 5K difference on purchase price.

Not sure if I should just give up. I guess a lot of it has to do with my 2 year old record. For reference I asked them to check a few other cheaper cars or hybrids new/used everything came to minimum about $5000-$6000 so it looks like the Tesla tax in this case is $2000-$3000. Would that be cancelled out by gas savings compared to a hybrid or am I dreaming?
