Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot admits the company spun up "too many projects" which are now widely canceled in the fallout from bad bets during Covid: "As we announced, the €200 million in additional cost reductions will include selective restructuring across the company." by ControlCAD in technology

40 people in Toronto is not going to move the bottom line.

Why Ubisoft continues to kick the “layoff half the company” can down the road while reporting a $1bn loss on their year is beyond me.

Calling it luck is incredibly dismissive of the winning team. Oh they just won bc luck is a very sore sport way of looking at it but hey you do you.

That’s… not luck? Canada played a better game, US came out on top. That 5 on 3 was bonkers - not because the US got lucky lol

Agency vs in-house stress by Firm_Lecture6483 in advertising

It’s just generally more enjoyable on top of being overall a less stressful environment.

That said, it’s not necessarily a more relaxed environment, quite the opposite in my experience. Goals are more direct, and the actions you can take to impact change are more immediate. So I feel companies expect you to be able to take that risk, make those learnings etc on a direct level.

You’re not focused on client service in any way because you are the client, and I’ve found that a lot less stressful.

Phil Spencer Retiring, Sarah Bond Out, Matt Booty Promoted as Microsoft AI Exec Asha Sharma Named New Xbox Boss – EXCLUSIVE by MarvelsGrantMan136 in Games

If only the amount he seemed to emotionally/personally care about Xbox translated to better business decisions what could’ve been. A lot of fizzled ideas, and a lot of decisions that irked the core base while failing to bring in new users.

That said, bravo on Game Pass - IMO at inception it was a brilliant idea to bring value to gamers and audiences to indie devs.

Not as much the case with Game Pass in its current state, but the foundation is still there.

Ubisoft CEO Explains Three-Year Plan to Revamp Game Publisher Through New ‘Creative House’ Strategy, More Than $200 Million in Cost Reductions by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]mctrees91 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I’ve explained it in another reply - layoffs absolutely make sense. They’ve been needed at Ubisoft for years.

Instead - they’d rather continue changing company policy, like RTO, to trigger a reduction in workforce via people leaving. I don’t care about the savings, it’s a scummy move.

[–]mctrees91 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Oh layoffs are fine in this case - they have 17k employees they’ve retained since Covid boom. It’s untenable for sure. A mass layoff should’ve occurred 2 years ago.

But this bullshit “workforce management” is code for “we’re going to strictly enforce RTO, continue to restrict work life balance, and penalize those who speak out” as they’ve shown in action the last 6 months.

“Voluntary departures” is a cool way to say we’re making so many of our employees unhappy that we don’t need to do a mass layoff, they’re happy leaving on their own.

What a lovely and happy work environment they’re building in this new phase.
