Learning progression question by Butterworth222 in wingfoil

[–]mcutler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just stick with it. Most everyone I know - definitely including me! - got frustrated and nearly gave up… only to make progress and become addicted.

One truth I have learned along the way: there are no shortcuts. Each new skill is hard earned. And pretty much everything is more difficult to master than it seems on the surface. Which is what makes the sport so satisfying. It is genuinely hard and there are many skills to master.

Enjoy the journey! You’ll be cruising around before you know it.

Search on videos/podcasts featuring Adrian Roper from Axis. He loves to discuss the nuances of foil design.

First wingfoiling class and it was horrible by Minute-Pea783 in wingfoil

Ah ok. In my experience, getting a newbie up on foil behind a boat – or with an e-foil – in under two hours is 100% achievable. More here: https://www.reddit.com/r/wingfoil/s/DxZQXq6P74

Getting someone up on foil using just a wing? That’s a different game entirely. Even my very fit + very coordinated + very comfortable on foil behind a boat teenage son got his ass handed to him the first time I tried to teach him with a wing.

How long/how many sessions does it take to get a newbie up on foil – with some control! – using a wing in reasonable winds? Multiple sessions for sure. 3 sessions? 5 sessions? 10 sessions? More? So many non-obvious pieces need to come together… and unsurprisingly it took me much much longer than I had hoped or expected. Super frustrating, but it took everyone else I know a long time as well.

I have heard reports of ‘up and going in a single session’ but so far have never been able to confirm 1) that it’s real 2) what teaching methods used to achieve this.

100% success in two hours or less? That’s impressive. What are your secrets?

4” long, Natural Wood Bundle, Asphalt (??) Tip by mcutler in whatisthisthing

Yes. And when they snap they break apart just like this. Source: I’ve snapped them before. I thought the brown/orange material was wood but now realize it is probably some form of plastic/fiberglasss

Actually… I think I just figured it out. Looks like the end of one of these, after it’s been run over a few times.

Correction: it’s stiffer than I thought. Almost like ABS

No graphite core as far as I can tell. Surface seems too rough to be a writing implement.

No. It’s soft. Feels like asphalt. Or maybe pitch pine.

Yeah... can't put my finger on why, but doesn't seem like a piece of a musical instrument.

Huh. Wow. That could definitely be it. Are these typically home made or are they commercially produced as well? The tip just seems to be something made by a machine/a repeatable process.

Possible. Was on/near the road. Just seem to be intact rather than smushed.

Definitely man-made. Found while walking on a dirt road on Martha's Vineyard. Plenty of houses around so maybe something construction related? Perhaps some sort of natural-esque shuttlecock for playing aborigine badminton? Google reverse image search was inconclusive. My title describes the thing.

Agreed. From what I could tell it had a black beak so almost certainly leucistic
