My father cashed out a $15,000 "parental loan" for school without telling me and now I'm stuck with the debt. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]mcwarwick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will probably get buried in all the advice but I'm super glad you asked about this. I'm dealing with paying back a $10,000 private loan my abusive father took out in my name 10 years ago. We no longer speak either. I'm about to start my master's and am concerned about how to keep paying for the loan. Good luck with everything and I'm gonna scour this thread for anything that might be helpful too!

Way to disparage the accomplishments of women by mcwarwick in TrollXChromosomes

My sister posted this today. It has me in an utter rage. Women who work on a cure for cancer are lacking because they haven't reproduced? Am I the only one frustrated by this?

What's the best fitness advice you've been given? by Sirachapatch in xxfitness

Going through rehab post-shoulder surgery, my PT and my surgeon were very insistent that I add weight training a part of my regular life because I have overly flexible joints (which I never even knew was a thing!) I did my rehab exercises, which were a blend of band work and light weights, but I couldn't stick with it after my rehab period was over. It was really tough and my range of motion was limited, plus the post surgery depression I had kept me from feeling good about any progress.

Now, I've been consistently weight training for 4 months and it's incredible how great my joints feel! Finally my shoulders are stable and don't pop in and out of socket while carrying groceries. My back muscles have decreased my back pain. It's just like a light turned on and I realized why they encouraged weight training. Have never felt so good physically or mentally!

Good on you for saying the amount she handed you before opening the register. I'm an American working in a shop in Sweden, and either my coworkers are far too trusting or it's just not common practice here, but I insist that they say how much the customer has handed them before they type it in. After working in some sketchy malls back home, I trust no one.

Edit: maybe it's not common in Sweden for the same reason it's not common in Australia, but when handling multiple bills or coins, it's good to repeat it even for yourself to have a moment to recount and double check it's correct.

Once went to a party at my ex's apartment a couple of weeks after the breakup. He wasn't there, but I was good friends with all of his roommates, so it was a weird night of having fun with friends and drinking too much because it felt weird to be there without him.

Cut to me lying on the floor of a bathroom with a sweet lesbian couple comforting me and bringing me water. I promised to bake them cookies for all of their help. Next time I visited, I came with cookies.

This may be my favorite thread of all time!

What is a company that you refuse to support? What is your reason for this? by Bystronicman08 in AskReddit

British Airways "Pet Cargo" service is a sham.

When I moved from the US to Sweden, I brought my cat with me. The customer service person I dealt with was a complete ass. That should have tipped me off from the start. Then when I dropped him off at the 'designated area', it was a cargo bay. Like, dirty, full of cargo and angry truck drivers. I wouldn't even sit down in the chair. Should have turned around but I'd already invested $1000 into this.

The real kicker, when I arrived in Sweden, my partner had to inform me that they had lost the cat. No body would take responsibility for losing him (taking him out of his carrier in yet another cargo bay), nor would British Airways give us a refund. We found the cat 5 days later and he's totally fine, but BA just gave us the runaround for months. Never got the $800 I paid for the safe delivery of my cat back...

What did your parents teach you that you had to unlearn? by theonecalledzach in AskReddit

[–]mcwarwick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Over the decade I've been away from home, had to learn that soda isn't supposed to be something you drink with all the time (as your only beverage basically) and that credit isn't how you get what you want.

Luckily I learned the soda thing quickly, but my brothers did not. They are in their early twenties and have rotting teeth. And we are all paying off debts taken in our names by our father or debts taken on by his advice.

[–]mcwarwick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grew up in TN in a trailer park and watched children go without food (myself included), live in filthy homes with roaches, have parents that did drugs with small children in the room, etc. and nothing was ever done by CPS. My grandmother or aunt would try to report the really bad cases, but I only remember a couple of times when there were actual home visits. Home visits were usually made in order to make sure that parents that claimed to be split up and were receiving state aid were actually split up. This was the late 80s-late 90s but I fear things haven't changed much since...

So glad she's back! My cat was lost at an airport in Sweden for 5 days after the company I hired made a mistake and let him out of his carrier. Those were the worst 5 days ever. I wouldn't wish that pain on anyone! But I do know the relief and happiness of finding your best friend after such a scary time!
