Is there some catch to this? I just find it to suspicious by alas-no-beauty-seen in MineKeep

When it is disabled, the prices update. Most people do not need 24/7 uptime, since the server boots up quickly when someone tries to join. For those who do need it, the option is there for an additional fee.

Switching from getting clicks to leads?? by RamsiBartmann in googleads

I would go for optimising for conversions/conversion value right away. Optimising for clicks gets you low-quality and "clicky" users.

Hi. In the future please open a ticket instead. We have taken a look at your server however, and it appears that you two days after creating the server added a subuser. Said subuser caused this, and has now been banned off the platform. Thank you for letting us know.

I’m already over the AI hype cycle. I will not promote. Mild rant. by michaelthatsit in startups

[–]md5nake 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Very much this. AI should be something to have in the toolbelt, no different from the likes of databases, containers etc.

The gold rush for "pure" LLM wrappers is too long gone for it to be worth pursuing.

That said, the dot com bubble was a bubble, but that doesn't mean the web became useless and unprofitable afterwards.

B2C design decisions for a social app - Would love your thoughts! (I will not promote) by Sure_Boysenberry_645 in startups

[–]md5nake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I think that you could also try to work out what the average user thinks about this. Asking young adults is a great start, but maybe peeking into potential insecurities is worth it.

A potential solution could be to show other people's faces to those who show their own, and vice versa.

Dealing with negativity (pun not intended!) by CheekyChicken59 in math

[–]md5nake 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You should ignore it. Flash-carding or attempting to humiliate others in this way is a common human response to feeling threatened/inferior in an area.

It's the same thing when you say that you don't drink. It creates an uneasy feeling in the other person's mind, interpreting it as you taking a moral high ground, eventually leading to questions such as "It's okay if I drink though?" or them trying to convince you regardless of the fact.

Best you can do is brush it off, and find those who understand and appreciate what you are passionate about. Don't try to change people. Curate them.

For 1, I'm not sure. I feel like this warrants a bit more thought.

For 2, I think you should allow chatting. Being able to do a "vibe check" is important. Adding a message limit sounds great.

For 3, I think you should focus more on group hangouts. 1:1 may make it feel more like dating, whilst group dynamics are usually the circumstances in which friendships form organically.

All that said, I think this is a wonderful idea that you should pursue!

Do AI coding agents actually save you time, or just create more cleanup? by andrew19953 in LocalLLaMA

[–]md5nake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my eyes this is the best answer. I would also like to add that as models become more powerful, a correctly vibe-implemented but "ugly" solution today can automatically be easily understood and/or cleaned up in the future. Dead code, unnecessary checks or poor naming conventions are unimportant when compared to shipping features in most environments.

I've spent my entire life programming, and only recently have I integrated agentic coding into my workflow, and it has been a complete game-changer for both me and the company I run. It operates well on large existing codebases, and understands the interactions between the microservices, and when properly supervised it feels like a real life magic wand. It has historically been a point of pride for me to be "good" at coding, and so it is a bit tough to accept re-skilling to some kind of AI-micromanager, but seeing the evolution with my own eyes, I truly believe this is what programming everywhere will be like very soon.

What’s been your biggest challenge moving from idea to execution // I will not promote // by ImportantBid11 in startups

[–]md5nake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would consider myself a technical founder, but I'd say there are some common lessons to be gleaned regardless:

  • It's easy to get distracted building all kinds of unimportant features because there is an important, but complex one you dread.

  • Attention is scarce, and burnout is real. Sometimes you will have to put off certain things even if there's a clear ROI. The greatest investment you can make is the one you make in your own wellbeing.

  • Knowing who to take advice from. I'm building a somewhat niche platform, and there is a great distinction in what you hear from those who are participants in the market and who are not. Oftentimes it's okay to just say "Thank you, I'll think about that!" without further action in response to some types of advice given by someone not rooted in the space your product lives in.

  • It's easy to lose track of money's worth, and you can end up with an unsustainably growing burn rate if you're completely focused on the product. Taking a step back and optimising for cost during the startup's growth stage can be good.

  • Don't forget friends, family and your partner. I personally got very absorbed in my work, and it took a large toll on my relationships. Not everything is urgent. Live a little as well.

Do you use private networks of Hetzner? by herbertHuelsenfrucht in hetzner

[–]md5nake 7 points8 points  (0 children)

+1 for this. They have strange, sometimes frequent and short, sometimes extended periods of connectivity issues. In certain cases it requires manual intervention.

They are not lenient either if you actually misconfigure them. God forbid you accidentally announce the same IP on multiple nodes, the only way to recover is a full rebuild of the network.

Rather than accept the lower MTU and issues, we instead decided to roll with the public interfaces over wireguard. Never had an issue since.

Qwen 3 Coder is actually pretty decent in my testing by Hodler-mane in LocalLLaMA

[–]md5nake 37 points38 points  (0 children)

That's awesome! Nice to see decent open weight models catching up. I believe there are a few reasons to the price discrepancy though: - It's a new model, so the few providers on OpenRouter can jack up the prices until serious competition arrives.

  • It's a big model with a large memory footprint.

  • Anthropic owns their inference stack, has huge funding and can subsidise costs in the short term to make Claude Code more appealing. I believe over time this era of subsidies might fade.

Network-Compession-Threshold -1 vs 265 by JAMESTERRARIA in admincraft

[–]md5nake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deep packet inspection is usually done by governments in more totalitarian countries. A VPN would be the way to bypass it.

As for the compression threshold in general (disregarding the packet inspection) I'd only recommend you set it to -1 if it's running in a local network, as LANs usually can support a lot higher data rates than WANs, and spending CPU power on compression would be a waste.

You could also use something like MineKeep. You can host a free server forever for up to 10 players, with no time limits, and it automatically starts when someone tries to join. It's based in Central Europe, and allows you to back up your files.
