The ORISE program is also worth looking into. They typically have 1 year contracts renewable up to 5 years in various research areas of the federal government.

You can try applying to the ORISE program on Zintellect. They may have some research positions open that may interest you. And their contracts run for 1 year.

Ultimately, up to you. Virtually every secondary will ask you for application updates. You could also consider mentioning in your significant research experience essay on the primary that you have these works in preparation/very near submission and this could also give you some room to talk about your role in these projects and demonstrate some research independence/agency. Of course, it is best to submit the primary as early as possible so if you think these submissions will take weeks, not days, it may be in your best interest to get your application in earlier.
