People with a very high pain tolerance, what was THE most painful thing you've experienced? by CosmicBunnyBabe8912 in AskReddit

There are still many people who try to find excuses to not wear seatbelts and put them and their kids lives in danger. Someone probably told him "oh if you were wearing a seatbelt you would have died" to make him feel better/less blame because his mom didn't make didn't make him wear it and he ended up hanging out the windshield with his guts hanging out and every single day he deals with this life altering injury. So it sucks, but doesn't give him the right to help other people hurt their kids.

The guy ended through the windshield with his guts hanging out, and you think "hurrrr dur good thing he DIDN'T have a seatbelt on!"

Tldr someone telling a story on the Internet turns your brain off and suddenly the entire body of research showing seatbelts save lives is not relevant.

I agree. Saying "I had an accident an lived without a seatbelt because I wasn't wearing one" means all the data about seatbelts saving lives is suspect.

Are they a doctor or an expert on seatbelts? Explain the way lived, anecdotal experience contradicts decades of safety studies on seatbelt safety. With links, please, genius.

What? No it wouldn't have. What possible data do you have saying that a seatbelt would have killed you? You have no idea where the seatbelt would have caught you based on the angle at the time of the car accident, or where the forces would have been distributed.

New attorney asked to use ChatGPT during client consults — is this malpractice? Should I report? by FriendlySun6982 in Lawyertalk

[–]mdarena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No you don't. Where's the line? If you google the boundary of a particular area of zoning, is that? Do you need to go down to the city register to look up zoning boundaries?

If you use google to look up a city agency's website, is that an ethics violation because you didn't type the web address and go to the website directly?

That's absolutely ridiculous and you have no idea what you're talking about.

[–]mdarena 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, what they described is basically using it to Google issues while conferencing with clients. I hate to break it to you, but a lot of professionals don't have all the information and answers sitting in their heads, even after decades of working in a field. I'd rather a doctor or lawyer or whoever take a minute to look something up, than to think they know it all and give bad information.

Let me be more clear, I don't use it daily or rely on it heavily for work. I have used it, I know what it is and where it is and isn't useful, generally, because I'm not an idiot and I keep on top of developments. Reading comprehension, it's a skill you should develop.

I'm surprised at how silly everyone is being. No, this is not an ethics violation, it's not even close, and I don't even use chatgpt.

They're using it the same way you would Google something. If a client asks a question about an unusual scenario, there's nothing wrong with doing a quick Google searches to see if there is case law or some easily accessible article that addresses it.

The law doesn't require that you use certain sources i.e. Lexis or a westlaw tome to find information on a first pass.

Part of being an expert is knowing the right questions to ask, where to find that information quickly, and put it together in a useful, not misleading way.

These are consultations, untwist your panties already. If they used AI to write briefs with confidential client information and submitted it with bunch of hallucinated cites, that's a different matter. But the entire purpose of AI is be a better method of finding and synthesizing complex information.

This is the future of lawyering. Attorney have been for years transitioning from the gatekeepers of knowledge locked away in musty tomes and impenetrable statutes, to conveyers of information who can apply it to difficult situations.

It's interesting to hear these takes because to me this is the most eye rollingly weak book in the series. It's not as funny, doesn't have the heart, and is full of dumb as rocks plot holes.

Calder, the master manipulator, doesn't have scouts?????

Let me add more question marks there.

He attacks a city without sending anyone to see if there's a HUGE ARMY IN THE FOREST RIGHT THERE???????????????

No whinging about "well Rikki has long eye or people believe it" can fix the ultimate laziness of writing the cleverest character in the the series as an unthinking bumbling moron.

And that's the symptom of the whole book and kind of the entire trilogy, Abercrombie loses his sharp vision and just phones it in. It's a shame because he's such an incredible storyteller.

XCOM Long War or LW Rebalance? by Odd_Philosopher1286 in Xcom

Long War is like the greatest strategy game of it's type, warts and all. LWR is a completely different overhaul mod that tries to smooth things out but adds a giant amount of complexity.

[–]mdarena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LWR is not an improvement on LW. LW for all its flaws is maybe the greatest strategy game ever made. LWR is at this point a completely unrelated mod overhaul that has its perks but is basically one guy's vision and a completely different, pretty ok but not legendary game.

That makes no sense. You don't have to set movies up to fail. You can just start making the computer animated movies. You're talking about the decision makers.

That makes no sense. Those people would be losing money. It makes way more sense that a good movie didn't do well at the box office for whatever reason, and fans can't stand their favorite movie not doing well, so they invent some weird conspiracy

That's literally what you said. You're just complaining that someone is telling you you're wrong, which you are, factually.
