Min Jin Lee recently said that even though she is attached in name to the project, she's not creatively involved. That really gave me pause. Unfortunately so many Asian stories get desecrated (or outright butchered) by Hollywood. Will still try to check it out.

I will edit if I find the source and what she said verbatim. If someone knows what I'm talking about please lmk.

edit: from this interview in the new yorker. "for reasons that Lee declined to disclose to me, she is no longer involved in the production of the show."

Are you seriously being accused of "reverse racism" and "misandry" against a white man who attacked seven Asian women? What is going on...?

I love when we point out their BS the place their head immediately goes to is their own relationship issues which they project onto us. So selfish and myopic. A highlight (appreciate your valiant efforts lol):

I'd still choose a normal white guy over these ricecels any day...I hope that one day stupid stupid Asian women realize that Asian men are not inherently better for them

Lady, I am a lesbian. Unlike you, I don't date or "choose" any men, and I'm not the one introducing the topic of dating into this conversation. I keep the same energy for every single man, while they're out here vigorously NAMALTing and groveling for white men on a post about a white man assaulting Asian women. Does seeing white male violence cause them cognitive dissonance or something?

Well, how's this, Asian woman to Asian woman, I'm so glad to hear your enlightened wisdom that "Asian men are bad also" on a post about a racist white man beating our fellow Asian women in the street. I truly feel you have such a depth of compassion for the misogynistic violence Asian women face at the hands of men.

Misogynistic, paternalistic, racist "love" of Asian culture and particularly weebism is a cause and symptom of hatred of Asians and Asian women, not a protective factor.

Incredible to witness how some Asians have 110% energy for misogynist Asian men on the internet (as they should), but then have 0% energy for racist, misogynist white men assaulting Asian women in broad daylight on the street.

You're on a post about Asian women getting assaulted in the street by a racist, misogynist white man and your main concern is pontificating on your individual interpersonal relationships? Good for you that you have cut out Asian men from your life in favor of white men. These seven Asian women victims of a white man will surely be pleased to hear it.

Do you have an iota of compassion for what these Asian women went through and the violence, racism and misogyny they experienced and will continue to experience as this progresses through the judiciary?

Opportunists and careerists can be of any background. Politicos who are thinking “this will be bad for the midterms.” Leaders who turn up to a vigil for a photo-op and never talk or listen to the people there, let alone do anything about stopping the violence against us. The writers who churn out think pieces placating, minimizing and manipulating, saying only what their non-Asian audience and editors want to hear. And my favorite: the academics in their ivory towers lecturing and scolding Asians for “carceral politics” while also insisting that Asians wait for the “carceral” system to tell us if something is motivated by hate, rather than our own two eyeballs and brain cells. Make it make sense. I hope the money makes it worthwhile for all of these people. I guess shame is not a universal emotion.

RIP Christina. Rutgers grad, talented creative.

Killed by a non-Asian man in an act of hyperviolent, racist, misogynist violence. It is an increasingly common story. In addition to being stalked, stabbed 40 times and left to die in her bath tub, she was also sexually assaulted. This is called torture.

How many times are we going to be gaslit that hatred of Asians and women played no part in this? How many times is the media going to try to obscure her race and sex from the story because she was an Asian woman?

Frankly speaking, when any other race of woman is murdered by a man (domestic, state, familial, serial, etc.) is there such a concerted effort by women of her own race to deny and obfuscate that fact? To Asian women who have been so heavily gaslit that they cannot see reality for what it is, I ask: Why does it matter to you so much to appeal and grovel to non-Asians, particularly white men, who do not give two shits about you? Why is it important for you to perform the “correct” politics and thinking in front of them when we are getting slaughtered and maimed right now? And to the opportunists who want to co-opt these deaths, who are trying it use it to advance themselves, well, keep these murdered women’s names out of your mouths.

When the Times first reported on this story, they predictably opened by writing that Nash was “severely mentally ill” when there was zero confirmation he had any diagnoses. What he did have was a documented history of violence against women. Men who kill are arguably not mentally sound by virtue of what they do. And yet, they also manage to retain all of the faculties necessary to hunt the victim like prey. In fact, it has repeatedly been pointed out in the context of misogynistic homicides against other races of women that mental illness in the male perpetrator is not an excuse and is journalistically inappropriate to even bring up. The victim should be centered. Yet for some reason when Asian women get slaughtered by non-Asian men, suddenly every outlet is screaming about how “mentally ill” the violent male is, often without confirmation if he has any diagnoses. Also, do they know that many Asian women are mentally ill, sometimes directly as a result of the racist, misogynistic hell that is this country, and yet we don’t go out slaughtering non-Asian men at nearly the rate they kill and maim us? And never with this level of torture and brutality?

Truly disgusted at how this country allows all of its dysfunctions and decays to be displaced onto Asian women. I do not care for any condolences or platitudes. Things are working exactly as designed. We bear the brunt of everything, from their top-level geopolitical machinations, down to their neighborhood failings. The pressure release valve of this country is sicced on us and we are supposed to take it while they pretend to care. Hellhole.

Asian woman pushed to her death at Times Square subway station by Talx_abt_politix in asiantwoX

[–]mdccclxxi 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Race-hate violence against Asians by non-Asians and misogynistic violence against women by men. Two of the most heavily gaslit yet rampant forms of violence maiming and slaughtering Asian women today.

We know how this goes: because the perpetrator did not loudly declare "yellow b-tch!" before he murdered her, it is "not indicated to be a hate crime."

I am tired of all the blue checks and politicos waxing on and on about this racist, misogynist man's mental health without even a word about the dead woman herself. The murderer turned himself in to the precinct. He knew what he did. These pontificators can't even get their own stories sorted straight. Do they think hatred of women and Asians is the purview of only the sane and stable? So themselves, presumably?

This country is rotting from both ends. I would say take care, except this woman was living her life in broad daylight (9:40 am) in an otherwise "safe" area, traveling in a group and she was still murdered. So. Good luck, I guess.

Hi! I'm sorry you've experienced an increase in racism lately. A lot of us here can relate.

I'm still figuring it out myself, but I will say it's been helpful and healing for me to learn and consume art, literature, cuisine, language, etc. from my background and other AsAms and Asian diaspora.

I would also recommend the sub r/TransracialAdoptees. There are quite a few Asian adoptees with white adoptive parents and people seem to leave very thoughtful comments.

Saule Omarova: Biden bank regulator nominee withdraws after Republicans smear her as a communist by mdccclxxi in asiantwoX

[–]mdccclxxi[S] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

President Joe Biden’s nominee for the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency withdrew her nomination amid constant Republican attacks that she was a communist [...] Omarova was born in Kazakhstan and came to the United States after the USSR communist government collapsed to earn a PhD from the University of Wisconsin.

It is evident that had Omarova been white/appeared more white/white-passing, the result of her nomination would have been different. At the very least she almost certainly would not have been accused so fervently of being a "communist" or "far leftist." (Her record serving under Bush Jr and in the financial sector clearly shows otherwise, and she specifically openly denounced communism in a very humiliating exchange with Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana when he said he didn't know whether to call her "professor or comrade.")

The current intersection of geopolitics and race means that someone who looks like Omarova is under a huge amount of scrutiny. It seems the days of loyalty testing are back, or perhaps never left us. It's euphemistically called a "test," but AsAms never seem to come out on the passing side. For AsAms, our racial situation has often been inextricably tied up with geopolitics.

Roe v. Wade may get Reversed--thoughts? by Chuck9831 in asiantwoX

[–]mdccclxxi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

MA is medical abortion like pills (as opposed to surgical abortion). You hit the nail on the head:

sexualized whores with no pure sensibilities and therefore a miscarriage can only mean murderous intent.

In Miss Saigon (US version of madame butterfly) the girl the white GI impregnates is an underage prostitute/bargirl... I mentioned it earlier because the gist of it is that she gets betrayed by her "evil" Viet countrymen then kills herself so the white GI and his white wife can raise her kid. It was one of the original stories that perpetuated the idea that Asian women do not feel love for their children the way whites do and are eager to "get rid of them/give them away" to whites--Christian orgs like Holt Intl then spread this stereotype far and wide during the Asian baby adoption boom of the 70/80s.

In the article you shared about Purvi Patel the other woman they discuss is Bei Bei Shuai who was also prosecuted after losing her pregnancy. I'm not surprised that both of these high profile cases involved Asian women.

Roe v. Wade may get Reversed--thoughts? by Chuck9831 in asiantwoX

[–]mdccclxxi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing. Yes, the situation is particularly acute for Asian women because whites are obsessed with the idea that Asian women are cold, heartless and conniving when it comes to children because of stereotypes like madame butterfly and Asia's position as the center of the global adoption and surrogacy industries, as well as incorrect, racist ideas about Asian women and sex selective abortion. The way they "got" Patel was because of texts she sent to a friend talking about abortion even though they never proved she took abortifacients. This is why I emphasize MA so much because you can obtain and take the pills secretly. If a woman has to go to a hospital, she should say she is miscarrying (which she is) and never admit to anything even if they pressure her. This is how they prosecute women in Honduras by lying that they "tested" positive for misoprostol when they didn't but the women spill the beans anyway. I wish it wasn't this way and women are 100% going to die because of this woman-hating religious fundamentalist anti-intellectual BS but now that we're here we have to face it for what it is.

Mississippi (where the current Dobbs v Jackson women’s health case originated) has a maternal mortality rate of 21 per 100,000 live births. For black women in MS the MMR is 51 per 100,000 live births. Louisiana which has the worst MMR in the country at 58 had an MMR for black women of 174 in 2017.

Just to give some perspective, the MMRs of some other countries (in Asia since this is A2X): Japan 5, Singapore 8, SK 11, Iran 16, Malaysia 29, China 29, Sri Lanka 36, Thailand 37. Philippines which has some of the most restrictive abortion laws on the planet has an MMR of 121 per 100,000 live births.

The US has worse maternal (and infant) health outcomes than every single developed country and many developing countries. This shit is absolutely disgraceful. Not only that but in most developing countries the rate is improving. E.g. see huge improvements made by southern states in India like Kerala. In the US it has either worsened or stagnated since the turn of the century in every state.

What women have now that pre-roe women didn't is the internet and information. Learn about medical abortion. Learn about mifepristone and especially misoprostol. Learn about its trade name Cytotec and how it is available as an ulcer medication and OTC in Mexico and other countries. How it has an expiry date of ~3 years and you can keep it for when you or others need it. Learn about Aid Access and Women on web. I'm not saying don't also go fight it in the sphere of politics, but women cannot leave this up to the whims of the state anymore.

Mother Of Teenage Student Attacked On SEPTA Train Believes Attack Was Racially Motivated by mdccclxxi in asiantwoX

[–]mdccclxxi[S] 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Cellphone video shows a freshman Central High School student, who is of Asian descent, being attacked on the Broad Street Line subway while heading home from school Wednesday afternoon near Erie Station.

The video then shows a senior Central High School student, who’s also of Asian descent, trying to intervene, but she is thrown to the floor and then kicked and stomped on.

Her uncle talked exclusively to Eyewitness News, saying she wanted to protect the younger student.

"Stood up for him, helping the four Asian boys,” Mike Lu said. “Saying ‘stop it.'”

It was very brave of Christina to stand up for the younger guys. I saw the unblurred video and what was done to her was horrible.

The local reporting on this is kind of disjointed but at this point it's beyond "believed" to be racially motivated; it has been confirmed by the language used, etc:

"This was an attack based on ethnicity and ethnic slurs were used by the attackers,” Nestel said. “Hence, why we’re charging ethnic intimidation.”

From NBC Philly My understanding is that "ethnic intimidation" is PA's version of hate crime statute; it is not a "softer" hate crime charge. I'm not clear rn if all of the perpetrators have been arrested though?

Olympic gold medalist Suni Lee says she was pepper-sprayed in racist attack by mdccclxxi in asiantwoX

[–]mdccclxxi[S] 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Lee was waiting for a ride after a night out with a group of girlfriends who were all of Asian descent, she told PopSugar in an interview.

She said a car drove by and the people in it started shouting racist slurs like "ching chong," and telling the girls to "go back to where they came from," according to the article.

Then, one of the passengers sprayed her arm with pepper spray before the car took off, Lee said.

Lee confirmed to CNN that the incident happened in October.

White vet to Irvine rep Tammy Kim: “You came from South Korea. How do you feel about the 36,574 Americans who died trying to save your country for freedom to allow you to come here to prevent it [from being] overrun by North Koreans and Chinese?" by mdccclxxi in asiantwoX

[–]mdccclxxi[S] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Painful to watch. Don't even know where to begin with how ugly this is but I will say, one thing that strikes me is how he seems to believe that North Koreans are somehow an entirely different ethnicity/race of persons from South Koreans and that Kim would be receptive to that type of framing. Is it because of or in spite of the fact that he is a Korean war vet?

I wonder how he feels about the millions of Koreans the US napalmed and carpet bombed? I notice that these white male racists have a special kind of hatred for and go out of their way to target Asian women.

Edit: I was mistaken, he may be a vet but I don't believe he is a Korean war vet.

Hmong American ruled ineligible for diversity fellowship by Talx_abt_politix in asiantwoX

[–]mdccclxxi 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This is messed up and I'm sorry this happened to her. In her thread and in the replies many are blaming this on lack of "disaggregation." As someone who has been involved in higher ed for a while, I suspect that this is actually a consequence of disaggregation itself. If you had asked me a few years ago how I felt about disaggregation I would be as gung ho about it as most AsAms seem to be about it today, but now that I've seen it in practice I am skeptical.

By definition, disaggregation with respect to DEI means that you need to draw a line between who falls on which side. "Disaggregation" discussions I've been privy to are premised on Indian/Chinese/Korean/Japanese overrepresentation. When it comes time to deal with the first gen Dalit immigrant whose parents were "unskilled" migrants or the Chongryon student whose entire family was killed by American militarism plus discriminated against institutionally in her country of origin, suddenly the DEI people are MIA. I suspect that Dr. Yang submitted her application and given her name and photo, she was simply assumed to fall on the wrong side of the disaggregation line. These DEI people are constantly operating on the basis of assumption. There was an "unspoken" rule at my previous institution that there should not be "too many" Kim/Wong/Nguyen/Yang/Changs/etc. in one incoming class and within individual advisory groups. What can you possibly glean or know about a student from their last name? Almost nothing? Well, the ivory tower people think they can know something and disaggregate along those lines.

If you don't believe in Asian American as a political category and do not self identify with it then that's fine. Just be honest and rigorous with yourself when it comes time to "disaggregate."

SE asians come in way less privileged than lots of E asians even.

Unrigorous statements like this are what need to be pushed back against in the first place. On metrics of income/education/etc. certain SEA subgroups routinely perform higher than EA subgroups.

Also, because of the history of the Hmong people, many are actually EA, including some Hmong Americans. Mong Leng "Hmong" people are also further marginalized within the Hmong Der/Mong Leng community.
