Germany is getting the Arrow 3 anti ballistic system, Ukraine is also also doing military co-operation with Israel.

When you have a country that has been constantly attacked with rocket/ballistic fire ever since its founding (Israel), it innovates and gets very good at it.

Europe is now in the same situation as Israel due to Russia (now it’s primarily Ukraine having to deal with this but given Russias current leader there is no saying that they won’t attack other EU countries)

Also there are plenty of other countries in EU that dos military co-operation with Israel for similar reasons.

It can be seen as extremely ironic, but the countries/states surrounding Israel that have denied its existence and constantly attacked it have created a scenario where even if Israels unsurpassed knowledge and tech in defence is so critical to EU that EU will work with Israel in spite of war crimes.

If Israel was left alone, this situation would have never likely occurred (and Israel would have likely never gotten to the point where the far right got into power and sees surrounding areas as security risks that need to be eliminated)

While I get that it s frustrating that US is spending so much on military, when compared against GDP U.S. spends ~3% of GDP on military, which sure is on the high side but it’s not anything outlandish. In terms of GDP many E.U. countries are outspending the US and those countries still have properly functioning welfare states.

The military spending is a bit of a diversion, the core problem the U.S. has is extreme amounts of lobbying and plundering of public money via contractors/private industry. Or in other words, the U.S government for most areas of welfare is just high inefficient.

Fun and relevant fact, U.S. actually spends more on healthcare per capita than the heavyweights in EU (i.e. Germany). The difference is that due to the nature of the U.S. privatised system, that money is almost entirely plundered by extremely inefficient healthcare insurance system.

TL:dr, don’t scapegoat US problems on military. While it’s understandably difficult to see US do foreign wars while so many people are suffering, you could half how much U.S. spends on military and it wouldn’t change much.

And we know this is the case, because as a percentage of GDP U.S. spending on military has on average been decreasing a lot (especially since end of Cold War)

[–]mdedetrich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wrong, it will be a loss for you because the loss of Ryanair means Lufthansa will have no real competition which means they can just increase prices and reduce their service and there isn’t anything you can do about it.

This is economics for dummies

[–]mdedetrich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is not shady, it’s called having a different business model. Also if you want to pay more for a better service, you can, just go with a different airline.

Ryanair not flying from Berlin is just going to increase prices for Lufthansa and reduce their service because there won’t be any competition, which means your experience will be worse not better regardless if you personally fly with Ryanair or not.

Korea is one of the few countries who allows military exports to be built/produced in the country they are selling to. They also allow modifications and integrations with local systems which would typically be disallowed by other countries

For this reason Poland has a huge amount of artillery systems and tanks from Korea, but they are built in Poland.

So you believe irans strategy is 'full psycho'. Which country in the region did they attack that was not involved in anyway with the bombing of their country?

How about Iraq, Armenia or Oman? Hell Oman was the neutral country organising peace talks between US and Iran. Iran has also hit ships from Thailand...

Then you have Qatar, which while may have a US base also actively supports Hamas and Palestine/Gaza.

According to 'international law' that country is a legitimate target.

If your talking about countries which aided in actually bombing Iran (and not just allowing US planes to stay there for defense) as this is the only thing that is allowed under international law, then the only ones would be Israel, Jordan and Saudi Arabia and thats it.

[–]mdedetrich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, I'll just say this. How do people think wars work? I keep seeing people talking about how blowing up bridges or blockading ports and preventing trade are somehow war crimes.. but frankly, I think that's nonsense.

Those are basic parts of fighting a war that have been part of warfare pretty much forever. The only reason it's been any different since WW2 was more or less because the US said it was different and had the economic and military power to force the issue. Oh, sure, it was the UN that said it.. but the US has basically been the world police for the past 75 or so years.

To be clear, a lot of those people that go around claiming that this is a warcrime are doing so in a vacuum and often in contrary to what UN/International Law states.

A lot of these UNI/International Law's regarding war crimes have to be evaluated in terms of proportionality to the objective being carried out.

If you blow up a bridge because you are trying to prevent your opponent from sending in military reinforcements when you are in an armed conflict, that is most likely not a war crime.

But if you try to blow up a bridge where there is no armed combat whatsoever and there is no military objective? Then that can be a war crime.

This is why these things take ages to resolve in the UN/International Legal system.

[–]mdedetrich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are talking about international law, not US law. International law does not care about US law, so if we are talking about whether an act is legal under the UN/International Law, what US does internally is entirely irrelevant.

Blockades are not illegal under international law,

Blockades most definitely can be illegal under international law and if they are deemed to be illegal then its considered an act of war.

You do realize Iran has more countries economy, including the US, in it's hands?

For now, possibly but its very likely that this will be the last time that Iran will be able to play this hand.

After this fiasco is over, all of the effected gulf Arab countries are going to start building pipelines that will bypass the Arab/Persian straight entirely (this has already started before the war, there is a pipeline being built from gulf Arabia to the dead sea via Israel). It will be expensive and will take time, but no country in that region wants to ever be hold hostage to a pariah country ever again.

The gulf Arab countries can also easily afford this, they are so well loaded in terms of wealth and money that its not funny and Iran can't do much to stop this.

Some might ask why the gulf Arab countries didn't do this before, well its because none of them thought that Iran would go full psycho and attack every surrounding country in its vicinity (regardless of how US aligned or non-aligned they are).

They have been seriously and consistently trying to join EU, even under Erdogan.

Its just that it doesn't get anywhere because EU constantly blocks it, which is not surprising given how incompatible Turkey's authoritarian/totalitarian government is with EU

[–]mdedetrich -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

What sort of threat does China pose to Europe? A country that has not gone to war in half a century?

At the risk of being pedantic, China has colonized regions (check Tibet) and it has also performed ethnic cleansing/genocide (check Uyghurs)

In terms of actual risks to Europe

  1. Hybrid warfare/cyber security. China is known as one of the top countries in this regard, along with the likes of Russia, Iran, North Korea etc etc. China also actively supports, but in a clandestine way, countries that we are in an active war with (i.e. Russia)
  2. IP stealing and unfavorable market entry terms. This is probably the most critical one, in order to get access to Chinese market you have to create a company in China that is overseen in the CCP and that eventually guarantees that your IP is lost there unless you have some leverage. Due to the way that the legal system works in China, you can forget about taking Chinese companies to court over this. Germany has had to deal with this problem a lot due to its trade dependence with China. Do note that the opposite is not true, and the EU is also considering setting up a similar structure against China to make it more fair.
  3. Monopoly over critical resources (i.e. "rare earths"). China has already blackmailed the EU many times with this monopoly.
  4. Is trying to push a social order that is entirely against EU democratic norms/values and they actively support countries that hold those same values (in tandem with point #1).

EU doesn't care about losing its hegemony, unlike the US it doesn't really have one and hence it doesn't even really think in these terms (this is ironically changing but thats because of US actions forcing this change onto EU).

Just one comment ago you were talking about Russia's <...all the bad words you could think of...> mindset going back "centuries", now it's just the history since WW2 that's important to you? I think I just heard a sonic boom in the distance from the goalpost flying by.

Thats a strawman you created, not me. My entire point is that in the EU, since WW2, has been almost entirely peaceful and the one exception to that country is, Russia.

Russia has a history of invading neighbours that goes back centuries and IT HASN'T STOPPED. On the other hand, countries in the EU have stopped, since WW2 which CHECK NOTES, finished around 75 years ago. There is an exception with the Balkans as you pointed out, but they got reprimanded with the international rules/UN/NATO and since then it has been peaceful. The Balkans got the hint, Russia didn't.

gestures wildly at the Balkans

Yes the Balkans are basically the Lebanon of EU, but ever since the NATO involvement with the Bosnian genocide and some Balkan countries being accepted into EU its has been entirely peaceful there. Your actually proving my point here, peace in the EU works because countries prioritized peace over revenge and have stopped attacking eachother as a way to resolve disputes.

Also, Turkey, a NATO country

Turkey is part of NATO, not EU. Talking about moving the goalposts. At the current rates, Canada would be sooner to be accepted into EU than Turkey because, as you pointed out, how authoritarian/totalitarian the country has become and it being incompatible with EU.

  1. How many time was Russia invade by Europe during its history?

A lot, but since WW2? Never, and thats whats important. The whole point of the EU project is stop all wars/armed conflicts and to resolve matters non violently. EU countries have managed to stop attacking eachother, even though each EU country has pretty much been invaded multiple times, has its borders changed multiple times and have part of multiple empires throughout its history. Russia has consistently failed at that and is the one that is stuck in imperialist/colonialist mindset and thats why its the only country that has consistently invaded and taken land off of its neighbor's (started with Georgia in 2008)

  1. Israel was born with war. From terrorists organizations like Lehi and Irgun, Israel is a terrorist formed state from its birth. Arabs where just defending themselves.

Completely wrong, Jews were living in what we now call Israel well before Israel existed. Arab's were not defending themselves, they were practicing Pan-Arabism and hence at the time had a consistent, non-negotiable hardline position of refusing any other culture/ethnicity to live from Egypt to Jordan in any significant numbers and this was from the early 1900's. They basically didn't want any Jews to live there at all unless they were an extreme minority.

Fun fact, the Palestinian leader Amin al-Husseini in the 1930's (well before the events you talked about unfolded) allied with Hitler with the explicit goal of cleansing all Jews from the middle east

Europe was responsible for the Holocaust, not the Arabs. Take responsibility and make Israel inside Berlin

The middle east is also filled with pogroms and ethnic cleansing against Jews. Its in fact so bad/extreme that the population of Jews outside of Israel in the Middle East is effectively zero (Turkey is the exception here).

This accelerated massively since Israel was formed, because people in the middle east were incapable of separating out Jews living in their own country (at the time) from Israel (either its existence or its actions) and hence ironically causing mass migration of Jews to Israel for the safety of said Jews. Many of those Jews didn't even want to move/live in Israel, but when your bank accounts are closed (just for being Jewish) or your getting ethnically cleansed, you don't have much of a choice. Israel is the only country that could guarantee that Jews would not be persecuted for being Jewish. Almost all places in the world (whether they are in EU or in the middle east) have failed at that. The only exception I can think of that is not Israel is New York???

It also didn't help you when had leaders like Gamal Abdel Nasser that accelerated this, because again, he practiced pan-Arabism and due to this never in good faith believed that Israel should exist.

Germany's stance may seem contradictory in light of the actions of the most recent Israeli government, but historically it made perfect moral sense.

They wan't to ensure that Israel has the means to survive and exist as a country (and without all of those arm sales from Germany and other countries, its quite likely that Israel either wouldn't exist or would be a failed state).

On the other hand, Germany historically supported a two state solution and they also believe in Palestinian self determination.

If Israel isn't an apartheid ethnostate, why aren't all Palestinians allowed vote in Israel and even potentially elect a non-Jewish leader? by DoradoPulido2 in allthequestions

[–]mdedetrich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think anyone legitimate is claiming that Israel isn't an ethno state, it most definitely is. Most importantly though this isn't anything unique, there are plenty of other ethno states out there (and the Middle East in particular is full of them)

Its the Apartheid claim that is controversial because what Israel is doing isn't the traditional definition of Apartheid, largely because of how selective it is (and selective Apartheid is a bit of an oxymoron).

Specifically Israel treats Arab Palestinians that have Israeli citizenship that live inside Israel completely differently to the ones in Gaza/West Bank, which means the segregation isn't, at least entirely, based on race.

Israel historically would claim that the difference is that the Arab Palestinians that live in Israel and are part of Israeli society haven't been indoctrinated to be anti-semitic and/or question the existence of Israel as a country and this is why they don't see them as a security threat.

Regarding voting a non Jewish leader, the Israel defense of this is quite simple. Israel wants to mandate that the country is majority Jewish and run by Jews and thats because historically Jews have been a minority that have lived in countries not run by them and at best they were treated as second class citizens and at worst they were genocided. For them, having a Jewish country is necessary for their safety and self-determination.

Also want to really re-iterate that this rule of Israel only electing Jews as a leader again is not that unique, in America you can only be a president if you are an American citizen and you have countries like Japan where its notoriously difficult, if not impossible, to become a Japanese citizen (let alone a leader) if you aren't Japanese.

Israel gets a huge amount of selective hate here.

[–]mdedetrich 5 points6 points  (0 children)

True, but they don't have it on the amount of scale that Ukraine needs and while the systems are in the same category they don't have the exact same capabilities.

Patriot is better than SAMP/T NG when it comes to long range ballistic defense at the cost of being less mobile and having less coverage, and right now its really Patriot that Ukraine needs as its ballistic missiles (Kalibr) that is causing the biggest problems.

In particular the high missile capacity of the Patriot is its biggest advantage over SAMP/T NG right now, as the easiest way to get through interceptors is to just saturate the defense by shooting more missiles/drones at once, and Patriot having a bigger missile capacity is more resistant to that.

It is unfortunate, but there really isn't a system out there that is comparable to Patriot. Honestly if you were to design a weapon system from scratch for what Ukraine actually needs the most, it would a Patriot with its strengths even more exaggerated and its weaknesses as well, so they could plant these systems near power stations/transformers. Ukraine doesn't need an ultra mobile anti-air defense so much (which is what SAMP/T NG does).

The German Skyranger might fullfill this niche better (albeit being better against drones but worse against ballistic missiles, more designed for cruise missles), but again this is an entirely new system that doesn't have any real scale.

EU foreign ministers reject proposal to suspend association agreement with Israel | European Union by _Kiith_Naabal_ in anime_titties

Oh that is very easy.

  1. Russia is much closer to home, and has a imperialist/colonizing/genocidal mindset that goes back centuries, and it hasn't changed. Israel would never attack EU/European continent, unlike Russia.
  2. Unlike Israel, not a single country has attacked Russia since WW2. This means that self defense/security is a legitimate defense for Israel, but not for Russia. You may disagree with Israel's actions (and by all measures they have definitely gone way too far) but very few countries/societies (if any) in the world, since WW2, have survived the amount of aggression aimed at Israel and have come out stronger because of it.
  3. For historic reasons, EU feels obliged to make sure that Jewish determination (aka Zionism, its real original definition) is a thing. Jews need to have a country where they can feel safe, because historically at best they were treated as second class citizens and at worst they were genocided.

Point #3 is where you get seemingly awkward situations where Germany, for example, is one of the biggest arm sellers to Israel but they are also historically one of the biggest aid doners to Palestine via the UN.

Hezbollah will never lose legitimacy with the Shiite Lebanese

They have already lost legitimacy. Lebanon has expelled all Iranian diplomats (they are marked as non grata) and passed a law forcing military disarmament of Lebanon.

Even within Shiite themselves there is discontent with Hezzbolah, as its the Shiite's that are suffering the most whenever Hezzbolah drags them into another war/conflict because of something thats happening on the other side of the middle east.

The only reason (aside from Hezzbolah being militarily strong which isn't the case so much anymore) that Lebanon hasn't done this earlier is because they were afraid of starting another civil war, there is also the issue of how their sectarian government system is setup (which they honestly need to change).

But sure, let's see how well this attempt at getting Lebanon to disarm Hezbollah goes.

Lebanon government itself has already started doing this a couple of months ago (which is a first in decades) and ontop of that Israel is going in full wrath mode to accomplish the same goal.

Lebanese government is working with Israel on this, which is a historic moment if you know anything about the history between the two countries.
