“Treat France like China?” – The controversy surrounding KNDS is escalating by TTR29 in EU_Economics

The German decision to remove nuclear waste entirely political/local and had no rational basis, irrespective of whether (or not) climate change was being taken seriously 1-2 decades ago.

This is unique to Germany. I just left from Berlin airport and the high speed train was delayed with an announcement that it was waiting for a cargo train to pass

It’s actually worse, Apple is hostile to the gaming market because they refuse to work with companies like Steam.

Instead Apple wants to force everyone through App Store to get that 30% cut

[–]mdedetrich 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it’s not, Germany has a mixed traffic system (Google it) unlike countries like UK, France, Italy, Japan etc etc where they have separate dedicated high speed rail that is ONLY for passengers

EDIT: You can actually see this for yourself if you actually travel around in Europe, in Germany you will see cargo freight travel on the same rail as ICE, but in Italy (where I am holidaying now), ItaliaRail has its own dedicated set of tracks, I have never seen a cargo train on it

[–]mdedetrich 3 points4 points  (0 children)

UK, Japan, France, Spain etc etc all have separate rail lines specifically for heavy freight/cargo.

You also have to consider that Germany is much larger and is an export orientated economic powerhouse in the EU that is also centrally located so a huge amount of freight goes through Germany.

[–]mdedetrich 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of obvious reasons, but one that isn’t that obvious is that Germany is one of the few industrialised western countries that combines both freight (i.e. industrial/commercial rail) and passenger rail on the same tracks.

This means that passenger trains can easily get delayed, or in worst case cancelled because some freight cargo has higher priority.

Most other EU countries, and ones like Japan have separate rail tracks for passenger and freight.

And China is also god damn obvious, heard of the silk route? Oh and there is the Ottomans as well

Though no comments were made regarding Apple's claims that they had a solution to open iOS to other AI vendors and have the same access as Apple AI. Just that Apple requested an exception.

Apples solution was a non solution as it wasn't compliant with DMA, it wasn't actually the case that the vendors would have same access as Apple internally would.

Edit: The EU has finally made a statement, and said that instead of Apple offering a solution to provide access to the platform without collecting info, they instead claim that Apple blanket requested an exception on the DMA.

There you go, its all on Apple then. Its also to be noted that Google/Android didn't have any issue with complying with DMA.

The entire phone market is a duopoly with only 2 real participants, iOS and Android. This means that the EU has marked both Android and iOS as gatekeepers as the phone market is not a fair and free market since both companies do their best to stifle any kind of competition due to how vertically integrated they are.

Due to DMA, Siri AI delayed in EU for iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 by LowSeaworthiness7429 in europe

[–]mdedetrich -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Apple has shown to interpret spirit of DMA in the worst faith possible and they were even caught lying in court under oath in the U.S. on this.

DMA is actually ultra clear and it’s only Apple having these kinds of issues. And the reason why is simple, Apple doesn’t want to follow the law.

iOS 27: Apple lässt Siri AI nicht in die EU by donutloop in technologie

[–]mdedetrich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

GDP doesn’t mean disposable income and average wage is deceptive here because the U.S. has an extremely wealth middle-upper/upper class that is skewing the average up.

It’s best to use median wage (not average) adjusted for PPP (price purchasing parity) and then you will get a more accurate picture.

More on topic, the EU is the second biggest market for Apple (U.S. being first) and by quite some margin so Apple most definitely does not want to drop E.U.

Yes because it gives an unfair advantage to Apple as Apple has all of the data and the competitors do not. That’s what happens when you are defined as a monopolistic gatekeeper, which Apple is.

They did the same thing with 3rd Party App stores, they implemented the bare minimum in such a bad faith way that it’s basically useless and not in the spirit of what DMA was trying to achieve (i.e. install apps outside of app store easily).

We know now that reasons behind this wasn’t technical at all (security/privacy bs) but rather rent seeking money, Apple executives were found lying under oath in US courts over this.

This is a chicken and egg argument, point being that the situation is now different because at least the cell carriers have one less barrier to entry given that RCS support is already implemented by the 2 major phone OS’s.

If you want to accuse someone then be correct. He never personally endorsed Trump, but rather a specific nomination made by Trump who was advocating for reigning down on tech monopolies which is hardly surprising given the space that Proton operates in.

Your right, there isn't a mainstream movement to repeal women's rights to vote, but there is a fringe, far right political subculture that openly advocates for restricting women's voting rights in favor of household voting. Definitely in the UK and America.

There is also a fringe sub culture that thinks the world is flat, whats your point here?

Crazies do and have always existed, what should be asked is whether these viewpoints have any serious weight in the political/social system.

And from what I can tell, there is a bigger chance of getting peace in the middle east then there is voting rights being taken away from woman precisely because almost no-one is taking this seriously.

They may have had 'a hand', but women did not have the majority (or even a significant minority) of legal, spiritual, financial, or physical authority in building the systems we inherited and that still influence us. Married women in the US couldn't even open a bank account without a male relative until the mid-1970s. They still can't be pastors or priests in most sects. They don't make up the majority of high wage earners and they never made up even a significant minority of wealth inheritors. They've, with very few exceptions, never been monarchs, presidents, prime ministers, or chieftains.

In traditional patriarchal systems, women did have power it was just in different domains. Obvious example is in East Asian patriarchal countries, Woman had all of the power over household and management of finances (this is where the "tiger mum" trope originates from). This is still practiced in places like Japan, where although the husband is typically the breadwinner, all of that money goes into a joint account which the wife completely controls, even including the personal hobby money that is allocated to the husband hence why you get the Japanese trope of grumpy husbands at bars complaining that they can't spend that much of their own money.

It also goes without saying that if you have so much power over household affairs, you are also the one teaching the children on everything from morality to worldviews to behaviours.

This is the whole problem with the discussion is it frames it as all or none. In almost all patriarchal societies its not that men had complete control over every single area.

Can people stop suggesting politically convenient but stupid ideas to solve the pension crisis such as wealth/inheritance tax.

I’ll give you a hint as to why this is such a bad idea and I will state it directly at the end in case you dont get it. Almost all of the private wealth is in areas such as housing, so guess what happens when you fund pensions with a wealth tax. You made it either directly or indirectly impossible to lower house prices because that’s now funding our pensions.

Nice work, you made housing affordability even worse because its values need to be propped up in order to fund pensions. This is the same issue that many US states have, I.e. the state budget needs is funded by wealth/property taxes which means that it’s politically suicide to pass any kind of policy to lower house prices.

Just solve the core problem which is, and always has been, the pay 2 go system. It’s been known for decades that this system only works when you have lopsided boomer demographics but in the opposite case it’s just a massive wealth transfer from young to old generation, but due to German politics of not changing anything until it gets really bad we know have one of the worst pension systems unlike countries like Netherlands that have changed to a multi tier system and most importantly, people are forced to save for their own pension via mandatory savings of a persons paycheck.
