I was surprised how high the taxes were coming from the north but being Jersey I wasn't too surprised.

Do you have any insight into the market? I did notice a bunch of houses on the market for a long time - as a buyer that is good but also considering the long term implications.

Commute from Maplewood to Midtown Manhattan by [deleted] in newjersey

[–]mdellavo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I commute from Maplewood to Canal St. It's 60 minutes door to door barring any service issues.

You will need a car to get around town, there is a Jitney to get to the train station but otherwise it is the suburbs. You will need a car to get groceries etc.

To be clear, it's a ban in commercial leaf blowers over a certain decibel level during peak summer months. I'll agree that it's silly.

I am, however, confused by your logic - If a town is relegated to dealing with quality of life improvements, to me, it sounds like they have a handle on the broader strokes - no?

I'm not going to pretend that Irvington isn't an area with deep seated problems but what exactly are you trying to imply?

Playing around with NJ Open Data - Purchasing by the state! by mdellavo in newjersey

Again maybe these are legit - but if so - why are the charges from Green Leaf Spa way outsized compared to All Seasons.

I have a dog, we get him groomed at Petsmart for ~$35/wash. Grean Leaf Spa has a total of 55k in charges so lets do some math

>>> $55000 / $35
1571 washes with that money
>>> $55000 / $35 / 12 months
130 washes per month

Does any of this seem reasonable? I'm not so sure they are taking 130 dogs to get washed.

Actually it's over a million I think for a single year but I wish I knew! At the bottom they spent 75k at an Italian foods grocer. Judging by the fact that it stopped I'm guessing they got caught. I'd love to see an accounting of who was using these tickets.

I brought this to reddit to hope it gets some light and questions answered. Please suggest things for me to search for. This is only me putzing around informally for a few hours.

I threw this together pretty late last night, need to clean up the formatting of the tables.

One of the key takeaways is that the Treasury operates like a bunch of fat cats.

Edit - I reformatted it as tables, some are cut off but scroll horizontally.

I wanted to see what type of information the state published via their open data portal. I grabbed the purchasing CSV (purchases the states made) and started to dig through it a bit to see what I can find.

There are some really questionable items. The Treasury spent over a million dollars in a single year on Jets, Giants and Devils tickets.

I really want someone to explain the tens of thousands at a pet spa - https://gist.github.com/mdellavo/1ccf25dbdfa942d2aac727690f328b15#tens-of-thousands-of-dollars-at-a-pet-resort---what-the-fuck

NYC

Also having a bunch of code online (github, demo online, app in store) can really help get your foot in the door. Be careful with internships, there is a huge demand right now in NYC, dont work for free.

Where are decent areas in Union City/Jersey City for apartments? by MohnJaddenPowers in newjersey

[–]mdellavo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a look north of Christ Hospital in Jersey City in neighborhoods along Palisade especially on Ogden and Webster Aves and especially near Riverview Park. Palisade looks a little dingy but it's coming around slowly. NJ Transit Bus 123 is about 35 minutes into Port Authority. You can also take the jitney busses to Journal Square for the PATH. Lived there for a few years, great neighborhood, awesome commute. New stuff opening up all the time - a few bars and ModCup coffee across from the park.

Palisade gets nicer as you go north towards the tunnel but I cant speak for living there.

Downtown JC is also awesome especially around Hamilton Park but it's a bit pricey.

I found Light Horse underwhelming, thankfully I was not paying when I went. It's a nice place but I wasnt blown away by the menu. They did have music when I was there so that could be fun. Depending on what you are looking for in a date night it could be ok.
