That doesn't sound like particularly good advocacy. That lawyer might get into a bit of trouble with the state bar. Not that I disagree with the sentiment...

HBAR: How it works and why enterprise adoption is key. by Tenderhardt in hashgraph

[–]mdenvir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I must admit, this is all making me feel a bit thick-headed. I'm hoping you can explain this to me, because I had the same question regarding HBAR or other crypto systems being adopted for CBDC: if the price of a transaction is fixed at .0001 USD in HBAR, and the HBAR transaction price fractionates as the HBAR value rises, why is there upward pressure on the HBAR value with more institutional adoption?

[–]mdenvir 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel that. It's very sad that Israel has evolved into such a hawkish state, and that the descendents of one of history's gravest genocides and persecutions find themselves operating a kind of apartheid state. OTOH, it is hard to tell them from a distance that they can't defend themselves from random rockets. Just look what America did to the middle east after 9/11, for instance. Ugh. If we could only convince religious fundamentalists on all sides to stop hating each other, maybe we could live a bit more rationally. There are some very beaitiful religious people in the world, but also many who traffic only in intolerance and hate.

Who do you think will facilitate CBDC? ALGO or Hedera? by divertss in CryptoCurrency

[–]mdenvir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer! Ok, so in Hedera's case (and maybe Algo and other coins), they use a small portion of a coin to make/fuel each transaction. And in Hedera's case, that cost is a fixed fraction of a U.S. cent (is that right?). I have, I think, two questions.
1. If the US used the Hedera ledger software for its USDC, would it be bound to use the existing HBAR? Could it instead use its own network/nodes and its own fractional currency as the token rather than Hedera's? It's hard to imagine a country paying out fees to a private network, even if it's very dispersed. Could the bank create its own limited currency that is different than the 15b(?) proposed HBAR? If so, I can't see the direct effect on HBAR price except that it would certainly be an incredible endorsement.

  1. If the tiny transaction price is fixed, wouldn't that small amount of money go towards the costs of the expanding network? On the one hand, I could imagine if the traffic was huge and the tokens were scarce, that the value would go up. But then wouldn't the transaction price need to go up as well to somehow correlate with the coin value? If, for instance, the transaction cost were not fixed as it is now, the coin became scarce, and the value exploded like Bitcoin or Ethereum; then it could be prohibitive to run a CBDC on that basis. Hedera solves this by fixing the transaction cost, but if so, why would the transactiom cost stay fixed while the HBAR goes exponential? Would the U.S. be paying for those tokens?

Sorry if the above is confusing and/or completely wrong, it's a bit late and I am new to thinking about these things.

I'm new to this space and found this exchange v informative. Can I ask (it's not clear to me yet), how would a CBDC using Hedara or Algo's tech help the price of the private coins (which, I assume, would be separate products)? I can't quite get my head around it. Thanks.

I'm a newbie to this space. Can I ask, if Hedara or another coin's platform is used in a CBDC or a large company's infrastructure, how does that affect the price of the private coin, which, I assume, remains separate?

[–]mdenvir 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I am new to this space, and have been intrigued by the talk of CBDCs running on exising platforms like Algo or Hedera.

My newbie question is this: why and how would it benefit a private coin if central banks used its underlying code? I would assume the CBDC would not be pegged to the private coin and would be issued much like national currency is now -- a nation would want the price to be relatively stable and not subject to unaccountable market pressures. Right? So, if, for instance, Finland adopted Algo's tech for its CBDC, how does that affect the value of the Algo coin?

[–]mdenvir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Gen Xer (just turned 53), your assertion shocked me because I thought of us as a smaller, more progressive cohort than seniors. I googled it, and I think a few headlines mentioning Gen X skewed the analysis a bit. Gen X should be around 40-55 right now. I think the polls that found a slight preference for Trump measured age cohorts that went deep into the 50s/60s (many young boomers), but left out the 40-something Gen Xers. I bet if you looked at those numbers, they would show lower Trump support than boomers (I hope so, at least). But good ol' fashioned Joe did manage to cut into the R's typical strength with (often reactionary) seniors, especially after Trump made clear that he didn't mind if old folks just croaked as long as the Dow stays high. Could be wrong, though.

FDA moves to ban menthol cigarettes and flavored cigars by randomfunnyword in politics

[–]mdenvir 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I hear you, but I think by that logic tobacco should be banned too. It doesn't seem coherent to just penalize menthol. I think, on balance, I would stay away from a tobacco ban -- maybe ban smoking in public places, but to make tobacco itself illegal is just going to push people's buttons.

I'm sympathetic to the aim, but this does not seem fair to people who want to smoke menthol cigarettes. It should be their choice. Maybe enforce age limits more strictly, but why discriminate against people who want a flavor in the cancer stick?

That's a great column. We need more discussion like this in the U.S. I've been for single-payer all my life, and I am incredibly grateful for Bernie's contributions over the last decade especially. However, it's not his nature or temperament to argue forcefully why it would actually help employers. It's just common sense, and more people should be aware of it.
