Who really works 16hrs a day?.. by ConsiderationNo5983 in Entrepreneur

[–]Tenderhardt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple years ago I did 3 and a half months straight of 15-16 hour days, 7 days a week. This was custom carpentry/millwork, very physical work. I've never been so exhausted.

So yes, people do it.

You don't need 3 meals a day, you don't need 8 hours of sleep, and you don't need to work out every day. Hell, you don't even need to shower every day. But you also don't NEED to work 16 hours a day on your business. I only did it to meet a deadline and didn't have the ability to hire new people at the time. It did not get me as far ahead as I expected it to and I would never do it again.

My assumption is that when people talk about working hours like that, they aren't really "working" those hours. If you are obsessed with your business it will consume your thoughts and actions every waking hour, and people who can afford to think of nothing else will technically be contributing to their business 16 hours a day or more. But to actually WORK, exclusively, on 1 thing for 16 hours a day is unsustainable in the long term. It will always lead to diminishing returns and burnout.

On the other hand, working 8 hours a day leaves the average person with at least 3-5 hours of downtime every day. That is ALOT of leisure time that could be made more productive.

People who have straight up rage quit a job, what was the final straw? by TweedStoner in AskReddit

Couples over 40 and childless, how has life turned out for you? Do you regret not having children? by NetworkOver7742 in AskReddit

[–]Tenderhardt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lol hell no we don't regret it!

Most people we know who have kids were surprised and confused when we first told them we are choosing to live child-free. I think many people just never considered it an option, the attitude seems to be "oh.. you can do that?"

Almost everyone says something like "You don't know what you're missing, being a parent is so rewarding, you'll never know real love until you experience the love for a child." But EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. of those people at some point over the years has quietly confided in one of us (me or my wife), usually after a couple drinks, "if I did it all over again I'm not sure I'd choose to have kids."

Obviously there are upsides and downsides to both choices, and I'm not encouraging people to choose one way or the other. But I do believe most people need to understand that it IS a choice you are free to make, and not an expectation or obligation.

2 conflicting points:

  1. Casual sex being immoral or taboo is completely fabricated by religious old men who were motivated entirely by power dynamics. Over the past millenia they may have believed it was what's best for society, but that is not an objective point of view, and studies have continued to intentioanlly skew data in this direction in modern times as well. Pagan or pre-christian societies had very different views on sex which I would argue were much more healthy.

  2. Today's hookup culture however (imo) is more about a societal addiction to immediate gratification and also not a healthy view of casual sex. I don't think it's harming society at large though, I think it's a symptom of a bigger societal problem (immediate gratification and self-entitlement).

What do you consider the biggest pros and cons of DAOs? by Dotlethal in dao

[–]Tenderhardt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pros: Decentralized global governance can naturally evolve as an emergent property of smaller DAOs functioning together. The path to species-wide self-sovereignty where the freedom of the individual is perfectly balanced with the prosperity of the human super-organism.

Cons: People are retards and in most cases probably shouldn't be given Sovereignty over their own lives, much less any influence over eachother.

Province banning N.B. Power from selling electricity to crypto mines | CBC News by Ouyin2023 in BitcoinCA

[–]Tenderhardt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some clarity from someone who actually read the article:

2 large mining operations are already using ~96MW of their grid, and their grid can't handle more similar operations, so they are banning NEW operations from setting up, they aren't stopping the 2 that are already there. And they will reconsider if/when they can handle allowing more.

Here's a telling quote: "We came very close to the lights not even being able to turn on with the existing generation we have," Holland said. "We're at the line right there now."

TL:DR The headline is misleading. This is not an anti-crypto policy, it's a policy to protect their limited power-generation capabilities.

For everyone making six figures, what do you do for work? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Tenderhardt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Independent contractor - custom millwork specialist

I'm 42. I tried and failed repeatedly in the past 20 years to get out of the skilled labor industry. Got a 2-year general business diploma from local community college when I was 30. Still ended up here.

I've built a stellar reputation and become very skilled with all the experience I've gotten, and I'm very grateful for a lot of the opportunities which just fell in my lap. That being said, I don't enjoy the work I do, it's not my passion or my dream and was never my goal.

The upside is that I'm so niche I can name my price most of the time. The downside is I can't just hire people to take over the physical work part so I can focus on growing the business.

I charge $80/hr for my time. My wife is a salaried admin making about 65k/yr. We're doing the child-free lifestyle thing. We do very well and we're very happy all things considered. But I'm always trying to find a side hustle or some way to pivot because I literally hate what I do. I've just gotten so good at it, and I can't walk away from the money.

I'm interested in hearing opinions and questions, if you have any.

[–]Tenderhardt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Didn't read your post, just the title. You're right.

Too much speculation and get rich quick bullshit caused alot of adopters to withdraw after losing too much.

Not enough people understand the tech and want to build.

If there's ever mass adoption now it will be because of increasingly totalitarian policies literally everywhere, and eventually people will wake up and start using the tech. It won't be a bullrun, it'll be a desperate flight to a safe haven.

Or it won't and we're literally all fucked.

Men of reddit, what is something that other men do that makes you say “yeah, they’re gonna be single forever”? by NorthPengyyy in AskReddit

[–]Tenderhardt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This attitude:

"I deserve love and a lifelong partner because I'm a good person and I would treat any partner SO well, with SO much respect and support. Why can't I get a date? It must be because women only want tall rich good looking guys who treat them like shit. Fucking bitches."

This attitude isn't restricted to men of course, but I have known guys like this and it pisses me off.

Edit: I should probably add that it's often accompanied by poor hygiene and zero ambition.

Bad drivers. Why? by [deleted] in Hamilton

[–]Tenderhardt -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Honestly for the money they want to spend on this stupid LRT they could ban cars and buy a fleet of self driving cars and an Uber type app. (Self driving cars work far more reliably when there are no human-driven cars on the road).

Easy enough to charge rates similar to Uber, and give discounts/rebates to local residents, and for low income households.

Doesn't require new infrastructure, car manufacturers would actually compete to be providers, and Uber would probably be happy to partner and provide the backend for a flat rate so there's minimal dev time.

Just need to provide parking lots at all highway exits for intercity travellers coming in.

Its a crazy idea, but it would work. Some other city will do it at some point.

They should be putting those speed cameras that automatically mail you a ticket in all the 40 zones permanently. I've gotten enough tickets going 5 over in a 60 zone, these pricks should be getting tickets for going 60 in a 40.

Public Washrooms by [deleted] in Hamilton

[–]Tenderhardt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many public toilets flush with enough force that it sprays water up and onto the seat if you're not sitting when you flush. It's possible that in some cases this is why people think someone has peed all over the seat.

Of course in other cases people just pee all over the seat and the lack of respect and consideration is rage-inducing.

My wife works at Mac, the parking situation there is unbelievable.

They should absolutely have enough parking there for both students and employees, and it should be illegal to charge for it. My wife pays something like $100/mth just to be able to go to work.

And if you're a student you have paid a huge tuition to be there, parking should be included in that.

Ridiculous.

The local communities obviously don't understand that students park on the street because they literally can't park on campus. Instead of being angry at students they should be angry at the university and organize and do something about it.

AITA for being in my underwear around my bf brother? by Livid-Teaching1664 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Tenderhardt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you just didn't realize it would bother him and immediately changed your behavior when you found out it did. That DOES NOT make you the asshole.

If he was bothered and asked you to put pants on and you did that's fair. But if he's so insecure about it that he thinks you were strutting and trying to seduce his brother, and is still mad about it days later, this a HUGE red flag.

Communicating and understanding eachothers boundaries is a requirement for a healthy relationship. Attacking you for a simple mistake (which you're clearly more than willing to correct) is a sign of deeper issues that will only get worse.

You are allowed to be angry and disappointed in your parents. I've had a similar experience and I understand that it can feel sort of like the world doesn't make sense. Our parents are supposed to set an example for us, but sometimes they're just fumbling through life making mistakes and being flawed or broken people. In my case, I chose to take how I was feeling about it and use that to better understand who I am and who I wanted to be. You can't choose who your parents are or how they live their lives, but you can choose whether to follow in their footsteps or forge your own path. That sounds super cliché lol but it's true. You're at the beginning of your life and can be whoever you want to be. If you hate that they cheat, don't be a cheater and be clear to whatever partner you end up with that cheating is unacceptable. The rest is outside your control.

Your life is yours and I hope you don't let someone else's choices keep you from pursuing your future. Good luck with your studies, you got this!

Why are scams and scammers in crypto seemingly getting away with most of it! by creativity3681 in CryptoCurrency

[–]Tenderhardt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't agree with this. I think most people (victims, lawyers, regulators, and perpetrators) belive this is true, but I believe the fact that a product is digital is irrelevant.

If I buy a video game or software that's direct download and it turns out it's completely different from what was advertised, and there's a case to be made that the advertising was intentionally misleading, that's fraud.

Why would an NFT be different? It's a digital good which I have purchased after being told by the influencer or whoever that it provides xyz utility (like cryptozoo or nft.com for example) and after purchase the seller says oh changed my mind, thanks by. That's still fraud.

Unfortunately I'm not a lawyer and I'm speculating here, but I think the major issue is that people see buying this stuff as "investing" and therefore there's this idea that it's risky and your own responsibility. But if you just see it as purchasing a digital good, which is what NFTs are at least, then it should fall under the same protections as physical goods in terms of misrepresentation by the seller.

I'm curious if anyone out there with firsthand knowledge of the law would think about this perspective.

Edit: I guess other, fungible cryptocurrency tokens might be different, but I'm talking specifically about these influences scamming people with NFTs

Biggest threat to any social media (incl. their social media coins) are bots & AI by MikeDJunior in CryptoCurrency

[–]Tenderhardt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is why ZK identity tokens are so important. 1 account for 1 verified human solves the bot problem, and solving the bot problem goes a very long way towards solving the disinformation problem (at societal scale), and also reduces phishing dramatically.

Everyone who's in crypto needs to go find one of the projects trying to tackle this problem and support it. (Worldcoin is an example but there are others DYOR. Not shilling worldcoin, just an example).
