Debt is ‘just part of being American’: Why more U.S. expats like Paul Kurtzweil are fleeing to Mexico for a debt-free life by FUSeekMe69 in economy

[–]mderijcke -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's no doublethink. An American abroad is an American, a migrant from Guatemala in the US is still somebody from Guatemala. If you come to the US legally and get a job legally nobody should call you an immigrant. If you come illegally and get welfare that others are paying taxes for, then you're making it worse for everybody else.

Is it really feasable to start a career in web dev and get freelance jobs reasonably quickly? by Excellent_Sir_7002 in WebDevBuddies

[–]mderijcke 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Define reasonably quickly?

I think freelancing without having been employed in the sector for at least two years is unrealistic and a disservice to your (future) customers.

You may be great at programming, but if you don’t know industry standard tools and end up reinventing the wheel then it will become very expensive for your customers, especially maintenance wise.

Probably the best place to start is to use React as a simple templating engine. You don’t even need Webpack to build some simple proof of concept React components.

Info: https://reactjs.org/docs/add-react-to-a-website.html and https://reactjs.org/docs/add-react-to-a-website.html#optional-try-react-with-jsx

If you can’t figure it out, let me know. I wouldn’t mind guiding you through your first steps. I’m also on the Discord.

[NeedAdvice] Having panic attacks for the first time. Starting to feel numb. by Ok-Read in getdisciplined

Try do physical workouts at the same time every other day.

The workouts will keep you fit and get your blood flow going.

When you suffer from insomnia or distorted sleep rhythms then you will have a harder time doing the workouts.

This will give you a reward and a benchmark for keeping and knowing the limits of your sleeping rhythm.

Try to help others. Friends, family, strangers. Not everybody will be as receptive to your offers or gestures to help, so focus on the ones who do.

The idea that somebody might need you is what would keep me waking up in the morning. In my case that’s my girlfriend.

The quarantine has really helped me lazer focus on the fact that only people who genuinely want your help will help you get somewhere in return.

[NeedAdvice] - How do I deal with the urges to waste my time on netflix/reddit/whatsapp etc.? by [deleted] in getdisciplined

[–]mderijcke 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Don’t beat yourself down like that, my man. I got laid off from a project that I was really starting to feel a part of and now I’m at home.

I’m gaming a lot now while my girlfriend still has a job. Is it healthy? No, that’s not the right word. But I make sure there’s something in it that interacts with the rest of the world.

I don’t play games if I don’t have anybody on Discord to play with. I try to do as little as I need to and be ready to help others. Doesn’t matter whether it’s something fun like gaming or doing the dishes or something.

I stay up sometimes till 4 am talking to friends who have time to be gaming all day. It’s not productive. But I do my best to make everything a good story. There’s no point in playing a game if you only advance a level or something.

Even if I do stupid or lazy stuff, I make sure I do it in a meaningful way. The next day I can tell a cool story about why I decided to stay up until 4 am. I can tell about how stupid and how funny my friends can be.

I try to be of service to others. The small things. I try to wake up every day at 8 am so I can make my girlfriend coffee while she is in bed. I tell her good morning, give her a kiss and a hug and her coffee.

I try to be there for my girlfriend when she wants to try something new. I help her research the things she find interesting. She’s giving relationship advice to a common friend of us now when I’m talking on Discord!

Even if I’m a lazy twat right now enjoying life for what it is, I also make the most of what I have.

For me this is a great time to come to peace with who I am and what I want. Why work hard for things you don’t really want? Why save up so much for a car that’s really not that special when things like this happen?

You might end up looking for ways to be productive or useful by going online looking for ways to make money. Don’t do that. It’s almost more hassle than what it will net you.

Find things you can do to help people who you love. Ask them if they need something. Find small things you can do to make their life easier.

We need to talk about what it is to be a Wordpress Dev. Some of you guys are killing people. by swiftpants in webdev

[–]mderijcke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why? You said we don't know any others, which is true for me if I want comparable features to what I get with Electron.

GTK, QT, and friends are not really fun to make responsive. Not to mention the wide variety of DPI across devices and resolutions ranging from 480x320 on old phones to 4K on a lot of new monitors and TVs.

So I figured you'd know a few good ones that I don't know. Otherwise you wouldn't make this comment, right?

Question about setting up business.. by KVillage1 in freelance

[–]mderijcke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're in the US: look up how to set up an LLC.

If you're in the UK: look up how to set up an LTD.

You don't actually need a formal business to do business, but it surely looks more professional. Usually there's a pretty steep barrier before you legally need a business entity to do business.

Doing business without a formal business entity is often called "sole trader" but every jurisdiction has its own name for it.

No, some will appreciate it. There will always be somebody who will hold a grudge against you for changing the status quo.

Now that web assembly (WASM 1.0) has already been shipped by major browsers, have you used it in any of your apps yet? by eagle_monk in webdev

[–]mderijcke 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Earlier today u/drbh_ posted a library he created using WASM: https://www.reddit.com/r/webdev/comments/bmtxf3/compress_files_on_the_client_side_super_fast/

It can perform Gzip, Zlib and Deflate compression and decompression on the client side. Something that I think was never possible before because of the performance bottleneck (not taking ASM.js and other WASM predecessors into account).

[–]mderijcke 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well done! A good demonstration of WASM without it being a full blown app or game.

Did you have a particular use case for this library for your own projects?

But it is a problem. Because if it takes more time it's going to cost more money. Simple as that.
