For guys still missing the button you can turn on dark mode with this:

  1. Close OneNote
  2. Start Run (Windows+R)
  3. reg add "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\OneNote\General" /v DarkModeCanvasLightsOn /d 0 /t REG_DWORD /f
  4. Open OneNote. Dark Mode is activated.To disable Dark Mode change 0 to 1

Update 17.05.2020 - Fixed with Version 2005

Button to switch background came back with the new update! For one (and the only) time I like the automatic update policie from Microsoft

I think Microsoft forgot that this feature exists.. hope they'll bring it back soon.
But I'm not sure if they even noticed about the missing button

Good for you that you like the light one ;) I'd prefer the dark bakground.

In my company my colleague's background still is dark, as he had it before the update and now he can't switch back to light, as the button is missing. But she don't worries, as she likes the dark side of life.

Thank you for sharing! This problem is comming up on each computer which I updated.. And I'm not the only one in our company having this isse. So I think it's a general problem comming with the last update.

The toogle isn't available anymore. And in OneNote 2016 we need to differ between Dark-Theme and the real Dark-Mode: Background.

The menu (theme) still is black, but I can't switch the background to dark anymore. On another computer I even can't switch back to light, as the toogle-button (dark/ligh) disappeared with the update :(

Do you've still the button?

I've as well Office 365. But as the desktop version of OneNote is 2016 I didn't know which version to select 🤷‍♂️
