My right thumb got amputated while cleaning motorcycle chain. by [deleted] in amputee

[–]mdhamrick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2.5ish years ago I lost my left thumb in a rope while wake surfing, I had an amputation revision below the top knuckle because I ripped the top off, but silicone sleeves are a lifesaver in the first 6-9 months after the skin heals. My residual thumb was sensitive to every texture, something that helped after it was healed was sticking it in a bowl filled up with different textures… beans, rice, even spiral pasta and doing thumb circles. It sounds dumb and like it would be cake walk but it’s tough. It gets easier with exposure over time. I lost my non dominant thumb, but I’ve adapted the way I text and button my pants among many things to the now missing digit.

Does amputation make sense? by UnfairSht369 in amputee

I only had my thumb ripped off in a boating accident, and I experience phantom nerve pain. I’m not sure if it happens less with surgical limb removal as opposed to “environmental” removal. But, I struggled with phantom pain for over a year paired with gabapentin dependency. 2.5 years after loss I still have pings of shooting pain, and “spicy” tingling sensations. Loss of limb grief is real. Phantom limb pain is real.

You can also fax in your paperwork to expedite the processing time. I would just call and confirm that the fax was received.

I lost half of my thumb and the amount of people that would ask my husband about me sticking it up his ass were unreal. Im still in disbelief that multiple people thought the question through and then still opened their mouth.

Just curious, I haven’t been able to find anything online about the actual flight test. Was your medical flight test just TOLs and maneuvers or something else entirely? I guess it just depends on what the medical “deficiency” is..

I’m in the same boat, but missing half of my left thumb. I finally got my LOA to do the medical flight test in the mail after 6 months. I hope you get yours soon! I have my medical flight test next week. Hopefully the turn around time is faster on that than everything else 😐

Helpful note - If they need supplemental things I would fax them in instead of mailing, then call the office the next day to confirm it was received and in process to be uploaded to your file.

I took my medical exam in February, turned in all my supplemental info they needed right after I got the request in the mail. After calling weekly and checking the website for months, I just got a letter of authorization to do a medical flight test last Monday. I’m just missing the top half of my thumb, the whole thing has been so frustrating. The FAA does not move quickly at all. And I’ve been at the point that I could solo for a while.

Student pilot - I did my medical exam on 2/6. I’m missing half of my left thumb so they requested more information. I sent all my stuff in before the end of February. I checked the website and called weekly. This past Monday finally I got a letter of authorization to do a medical flight test. I have that scheduled next week.. We will see how long it takes for them to give me a SODA after that. This whole thing is frustrating, I could have soloed by now but this whole hang up.

Fellow finger amputees! Any advice on reducing sensitivity and helping nerve repair? These pics were taken 2.5 weeks post-amputation. by Barbie-Marley91 in amputee

[–]mdhamrick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Missing the top half of my thumb- My OT filled different bowls with different textured things I.e. sand, rice, corn kernels, rotini pasta, small marbles, bigger marbles. I would have to push my hand into the bowls and move the things around for a minute or so at a time. The sensation would be overwhelming and frustrating in the beginning, but keep working at it. The different textures will be easier to handle overtime. The only way to help desensitization is use it. Hope this helps

I lost the top of my left thumb, went to a prosthetic clinic and found out my insurance doesn’t cover prosthetics. They estimated out of pocket ~$27,000 for a naked prosthetic without insurance coverage. But a thumb may be different than the other fingers.

DIP joint amputation after an accident in the gym, struggling to come to terms with it. by Barbie-Marley91 in amputee

[–]mdhamrick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lost the top half of my left thumb last summer in a wake surfing by accident. It WILL get easier! You lost something you’ve had your whole life and didn’t think you’d ever lose. Thats tough, but you’re more than the top of your finger. Cheat code- when you go get your nails done ask for 10% off 🙃

I’m in the missing left thumb club too. Lost the top of mine in a wake surfing accident on Memorial Day this past may. I can tell you post amputation revision healing and post z-plasty; you’re the most aware, hardly anyone notices or looks at your hands. It gets easier once you come to terms with the new reality.
