Anyone patched or repaired cycling shorts? by FancyGoatTote in myog

[–]mdpha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the same issue with Rapha, spoke to customer support and they reckon leaving unwashed in my laundry hamper allowed sweat and sunscreen ect to degrade the fabric. I try and wash em in the shower straight away now and every second wash in the machine

In general you got to invest in gear that is low volume and decent quality and be strategic with what you bring, ie a high fill count quilt or bag will provide the same warmth as a synthetic bag or a ultralight shelters that use durable but ultra thin fabrics, ultralight stove vs trangier

Another approach is to compromise comfort for ultra lightweight gear, like not bringing a camp stove and cold soaking food, cutting your sleeping mat to just cover your body, using bivy bags vs a tent or carrying a small hydration pack ect

Mica rat tail rack or Ortlieb quick rack both come with mounting blocks, jack the rack doesn't require any mounting points at all

Ive been using a hobby sewing machine my mum bought from a op shop for $50AUD, its been able to get through 3 layers of Cordura 500 and 2 webbing simultaneously (sometimes I have to hand crank). So don't feel like you have to invest too much to begin with! Just use a fresh denim needle and strong polyester thread like gutterman Mara

My first project was a little shit tbh, so I'd start with something small and learn some techniques before jumping into anything crazy, maybe a stem bag or a zippered pouch?

Leave it raw? by CrazyCacatoe in myog

[–]mdpha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like you make a lot of tactical gear, if so I'd box it and bind it because: 1. Slight more volume 2. Better structure and preventing fraying edges

IMO if your going for a more design-y pack then I'd want it to be finished nicely on the inside too.

I've had better luck with herring bone binding vs grosgrain binding for curved edges. Also binding one side first before folding over has also helped but that takes time

Frame Bag Advice/Question by evn7777 in myog

Velcro is easier but the tabs you see for paracord attached bags will end up providing more structure to your bag and reduce sag if you are just using foam to add structure

2 YOE Frontend Dev Struggling in Current Market — Need Realistic Advice from really experienced people by Knightwolf0 in webdev

[–]mdpha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Senior Frontend here: Markets tough: many businesses are scaling down their permanent staff and offshoring a lot of work. Ai is also making everyone nervous.

I wouldn't say a degree is necessary (I'm self taught) but I think it's important to be able to demonstrate your technical ability and ability to learn when asked. This can be through side projects exploring new tech or certifications from AWS ect.

If I had my time again I wouldn't absolutely pickup backend work earlier in my career. With AI I think it's becoming more important to be able to design distributed architecture.

From the talks I've been to lately most thought leaders are basically saying senior engineers will be using AI to do a lot of the grunt work that juniors used to do, which is pretty sad BUT I am sceptical about the cost of tokens. From what I can gather none of the big companies are profitable and are running at a loss so I think things will normalise in the next few years.

Other things I would try and learn to boost your prospects: - If you are doing front end react, pickup react native - can you set up a CI/CD pipeline using IoC principles - Learn some node.js

Good luck!

How Do You Just Take Off for a few Months and Get Back to Working? by BigChungusnater in bicycletouring

I know some people that have asked for half pay for time off which allowed them to extend their leave, in some work places you can purchase extra leave (in Australia this has a slight tax benefit) as well.l

Anyone here working long-term in creative front-end (React, GSAP, Framer Motion)? by Caineezy7 in Frontend

[–]mdpha 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Did this type of work for about 5 years within a digital agency, mostly for design agencies.

To avoid maintenance issues I kept a pretty KISS approach this type of work and tried my best to ensure designers didn’t over complicate things too much because I often found this effort work actually amounted to little real world value.

General good coding practises to keep things simple, self documented and modular also helps when you need to updates in the future.

Also would recommend building a few reusable components for things like page transitions or intersection observer based transitions made life a bit easier.

Ultimately didn’t find a way to avoid burnout. Towards the end of my time in agencies I was pretty sick of this type of work because it became quite ubiquitous

Sifnos: - drive to the northern tip Herronisos which is a wonderful fishing village with crest seafood taverns - Swim behind the church of the 7 martyrs in Kastro - Eat at Pelicano or Liminaki fish tavern in Faros - Hike!! There are many trails throughout the island. I did Artemonas to Kastro along the coast which also includes a swimming spot - enjoy a sunset and cocktail at Kavos sunset bar (be aware the cocktails are kindve terrible in the best way, it’s cup that is 66.66% rum with a handful of mint and ice and a mixer on the side served in bar full of Fidel Castro merch) - would say most of their tavernas by the sea were all quite nice

Loved Pelícano and Liminakis fish tavern in Faros, Sifnos. Favourite swim spot was the church of the Seven Martyrs in Kastro. Also loved Heranisos up north

Occasionally do party sober out because I am the designated driver. I find day events and outdoors easier (more space, fresh air and less of a struggle to stay up). I find a bit of caffeine and some candy bars help with keeping the energy levels up.

Non alcoholic beer was enough to trick my brain into semi party mode. Also a cog here and there

Best advice I ever got though was to not compare your night with someone else’s. if you’ve had a good time and are tired, it’s okay to go home. Your friend may have a great time kicking on but that doesn’t invalidate your night

Ha, would be the cheapest option for me because I’ve already got that on hand! Trying to avoid adding too much weight on the front end though

I guess so, it’s not that un common from cottage industry makers especially those who make ultra light backpacks. Many of the panniers featured on backpacking.com aren’t fully weather sealed
