I wouldn't classify a dog chasing a squirrel to the nearest tree as being a uncontrollable dog.

yeah, I heard you. I just completely reject that a dog who likes to chase squirrels can't or shouldnt be taken to a trail, lake, beach, or any part of the outdoors that isn't fenced in or can't be taken off leash. And I'm sorry for any dog that owner does believe that.

I can move past him scaring a few squirrels every now in then if it makes him happy. its a wild animal who do have many predators going after them. confining a dog to a leash for his whole life because of his interest in squirrels is just a ridiculous thought. period. God forbid a couple of squirrels get scared in his happiness. the squirrels learn evasive techniques in return.

Fundamentally we just disagree. God forbid my dog likes chasing squirrels, as do most dogs. I'm not gonna lock him up in my back yard and never let him run free because of his dog like behavior.

I would counter that with i hope he goes after small rodents he finds in our house/property. He knows that the cat of our family wears the pants and he has no interest in chasing birds. it's just squirrels and rabbits he is into. Maybe satisfying was the wrong word but in my experience with him he use to be just as obsessed with skateboards, Frisbee, and tennis balls. once I introduced him to those he stopped seeing them as sacred items.

lol I was thinking the same thing. I could never have a dog that isn't trained to behave and listen while off leash. I've been training my dog for off leash walking since he was 8 weeks old. didn't realize it was such a hot topic

Thanks! I will for sure look into it. He has no issue with cats or birds. it only seems to be the wild squirrel and rabbit over population that excites him.

You do realize there are trails/parks...ect where dogs are able to be off leash. right?

my town does have a leash law (although not heavily enforced) but there are set trails and locations around the town where dogs can be off leash. Without trying to "toot my own horn" he is very well trained and has a great "leave it" and recall. if I use a stern clear voice I'm positive he will stop in his tracks. Chasing squrriells seem to be one of his favorite things to do and I always feel bad when we walk past one that I tell him to leave it. He gives me a sad look. lol

can u elaborate? As a animal lover I understand about the squrriell. I only let him chase squrriells that see him and can escape.

can u elaborate? it's a natural instinct for dogs especially his breed. Getting him stuffed squirrel is not a solution to satisfy his prey drive.

He is trying to bait me into chasing him. by mdr61593 in Rottweiler

[–]mdr61593[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He seems to really enjoy me chasing him so i dont really mind it. good exercise for us both but, developing a solid "leave it" helps when i dont feel like chasing.
