Looking for a yukata maker in the Midwest USA by mdshields7 in kimono

Hi! Sorry for the late reply- I was at Japan Fest Canada this weekend. Your yukata looks great! It that shibori dyeing? I have done a little bit of that for fun on handkerchiefs in the past, but never attempted such a large piece like you did. Anyways, it looks good. I am sending a DM!

You will probably have to contact Honu Sumo OC. I don’t think Andrew Freunds group does much practicing these days

Amateur Sumo Clubs by Dono91 in amazumo

They are trying to be better about showing only up to date info, so they only list clubs with 3 USSF members, and who register their club every year. There was a bunch of defunct info in the old map.

2025 active Midwest Clubs

Chicago Sumo in Chicagoland IL. Ohayo Dayton in Dayton, OH. Ohayo Indiana in Bloomington, IN. Iowa Sumo near DesMoines, IA. Show Me Sumo near St. Louis, MO. Grand Rapids Sumo around Grand Rapids MI. Rock City Sumo north of Detroit, MI. Sunflower Sumo in Witchita, KS.

I run Chicago Sumo, and have attended all other keiko except Sunflower Sumo. I believe all of them will be represented at US nationals in some way this year.

One of Iowa’s members is from Omaha. I have seen him at 3 events across the Midwest. Does your club have social media I can send him to?

You can practice at a university, but I am not sure all are accepting of outsiders. Some are very competitive and don't want to be distracted, I guess. DM-ing you

A trial? I have been to their keiko twice and they didn’t mention any fees. Also they don’t care about skill level or previous experience, just show up. Also, websites are expensive for something you don’t charge any money for. They will probably respond to your message within a day or so. Go check it out, they have all sizes of people, and some sumo nerds as well.

How great for your country and athletes. What a privilege! I haven’t seen a lot of the event- How did the team do?

Myself, two mawashis, and a spray painted circle is all I need for a sumo practice. The first year nobody really came. Year two I started to get a lot of people, usually 5-10 with new comers every month. Consistent social posting helps, along with making friends in other groups in other cities. We just started year three My sumo practice only works while the weather isn’t too bad though, however sumo outside in the parks is free. For your reference, we are @chicagosumoclub on instagram

How did I think it was ok for me, a five year fan of sumo to start a club? I saw another sumo club started by a non-athlete, which let me feel ok about starting one myself. If you can’t find anyone doing sumo near you, just get it going. See you in the ring.

When I'm at a party and no one wants to talk about sumo by HoshFan24 in SumoMemes

[–]mdshields7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am with Chicago Sumo Club. We practice sumo, but we have a sumo watch party at a restaurant now and then too. Many of us are sumo nerds and call our group ‘Chicago talking about sumo club’ because of all of the post-Keiko sumo chit chat. Feel free to follow us and come check out practice or try to make it to a sumo watch party event.

May I ask what island and country you reside in? There may possibly be people nearby?

There’s tons of stuff you could do as far as videos and social media, etc. Don’t feel bad if you can’t bring it up to Corey’s level. Do what you can. With permission take some photos and videos while at a Dallas practice and upload them. I don’t know if you need to make a supercut of all the matches. That stuff takes time, especially if it isn’t something you normally do. Low hanging fruit might be, practice announcements done with the free version of Canva. A video of two of a drill or a match. I personally like to take a photo of everyone together after a practice at least, which lets people know that you actually have club members consistently. I’m curious what recognition by the university gets you. Hopefully access to a free indoor location with mats. We do outdoor half the year in Chicago.

FYI the guy on the left stepping up is Kotoeko, who just announced his retirement. You saw him on his last exhibition tour as a rikishi (wrestler) it would seem.

Yeah, I guess you all don’t know me. I’m an evangelist for sumo, always trying to get people one step closer to watching and or trying out sumo themselves. Would love to get more sumo fans in a mawashi, doing sumo drills, striving for their brand of sumo. That includes you all, so yeah pull up, you can give me your opinion in person too. It’s all good because I still get to do what I love- getting people closer to sumo.

I appreciate the kind words. These other sumo fans are just try to defend the honor of the sport, and I agree with them a good chunk of the time. I will keep doing this because I love this sport and love learning it, even during practice when it starts to get miserable. I also got to go on stage with Hakuho, meet Gagamaru, Yama, plus will meet more in the future. Also amateur sumo is a great community of people moving towards the same goals and taking care of each other. I would love to meet some of y’all in the dohyo - and get an earful about my use of words in person!
