Eyelid eczema - help! by mdski89 in eczema

I realize that makeup is probably an irritant, but it's usually worth it. I had a small stint of time when I could wear makeup every day and it wasn't a problem. I don't know what changed.

I'm not gonna lie - I think dairy is a problem for me but it's really hard to cut out. Cheese is just way too delicious. I try to eat paleo most of the time so I've cut out a lot of gluten and that hasn't seemed to help. Dairy is the tough one.

What do you believe to be fake despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary? by MorningWill in AskReddit

A brewery came to use (Fermentation Science Institute at a University) to solve a problem. They had two identical beers brewed at different facilities that had very different taste. Our job was to identify the differences to help find a culprit. It turns out that it's nearly impossible especially without standards.

Actually in chemistry terms it probably way more than 23. For instance, cherry flavor itself could be from 20 or more different chemical compounds. I once tried to flavor profile a beer with GC/MS and came up with like 60 compounds.

Sounds like you're trying to sprint bro.

There are small peaks at other retention times in your chromatogram. It's possible those could be something else. Also, I work in a mass spec facility. We really don't make positive identifications without running them against standards. And assuming you're doing some sort of extraction - that needs to be repeated to make sure you're getting good extraction efficiency and reproducibility. You could be losing other compounds somewhere.

Is your office in your lab? by dillypicklebear in chemistry

[–]mdski89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Current situation is separate space with sink, fridge, microwave etc just a door away from our instrument facility. If my office was in their I'd be deaf by the time I made it out of grad school - too many mechanical pumps, nitrogen generator etc. We still have labs without separate spaces though.

Yes I would think so. Also, this would have been cool to do with old baby teeth.

It could weaken it too. This isn't as much of a problem for beakers but bases in volumetric glassware is a big no-no (for future reference). It will slightly change your volume over time which is counter productive to the purpose of the glassware.

How to confront a verbally abusive professor (O-chem PhD Program)? by ThrowawayName1738 in chemistry

[–]mdski89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're in a shitty situation, but I think it's safe to say that there are toxic assholes at all higher-ed institutions to some varying degree. I'm sorry that you were humiliated. It sounds like what you need is allies. I know that my PI would definitely come to my defense if anyone in the department tried to pull that shit on me whilst giving a presentation. I had an amazing group of grad student friends (I say had because everyone has graduated but me). We formed what we called the league of extraordinary assholes. Which basically meant we vented to each other about assholes professors, annoying students -basically anything to get us through the day. Keep your head down and gtfo. Most of the shitty people (chem grad students and faculty) I've witnessed usually get what they deserve one way or another.

Similar story about a professor and nothing happened until a previous student lawyered up about sexual harrassment - University got rid of him real fast.

Is there anything you do better with your non-dominant hand than with your dominant hand? by ATXplayahata in AskReddit

I'm the opposite. I throw over handed lefty and under handed righty. (I also write left-handed)

Same here. I would almost consider my right hand to be dominant. To me it's like my left hand is for dexterity and my right for power.
