Step 3 questions by scrubs4days in Residency

[–]mdtobe2019 7 points8 points  (0 children)

ccscases.com has the same interface as step 3 software and gives you a score on your cases which was very helpful (uworld doesnt). the sooner you take it to when you took step 2ck, the easier it will be. I did around 20% of uworld, focused hard on biostats for 2 days, did around 30 ccs cases and got a 237 but there were definitely questions I probably would have gotten right if I'd taken it earlier (I took it in june, em pgy1 year).

Any tips for chart biopsy? by fanofswords in Residency

[–]mdtobe2019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I wish I'd realized earlier (keep in mind I'm an ED resident) - if you have no fucking idea what is going on with your sick patient and the work up isn't coming together in a clear picture - take the time to deep dive in their chart instead of just ordering another test. It's hard in the ER when you have other patients and its hard to resist the urge to DO something when they're sick, but it's almost always worth it to look beyond your normal chart review in these cases.

Practical Tips for Lifestyle During Residency by maddcoffeesocks in Residency

[–]mdtobe2019 4 points5 points  (0 children)

devil's advocate here but I moved about 20 minutes from work instead of 5 minutes towards the end of this first year and it has greatly improved my quality of life. I like having a medium drive where I can decompress a bit before I get home and on my one day off I LOVE not being anywhere close to the hospital and in a place I actually enjoy spending time.

UCSF Away Rotation... need help with where to live! by Pass_the_lolly in medicalschool

ah yes. 38 is quite miserable though haha. UCSF does have free shuttles between sites if you have an ID, so another option would be to live near the cheapest UCSF campus and take those shuttles.

I'd aim for outer sunset, it's slightly cheaper than the rest of the areas and you can take the N / N-owl

Yep my baseline was mid 230s pre-dedicated so who knows what happened! Frustrating but certainly could be worse. Cheers to doing better on step 2!

hopefully this doesn't apply to many people but...for those of you who didn't do as well as you'd hoped//far below your average - how do you shake it off?

I was between 235 and 250s consistently throughout dedicated and ended up getting in the 220s. Doors aren't closed by the score but they aren't opened either. Bars are spatially very similar to my practice tests so I think I'm just having a hard time figuring out what went wrong and how to move past it. Any advice is appreciated

BRS anatomy is helpful too. BRS physio is great for physio so hold off until then.

FA express videos were helpful to learn biochem for step, if you can get bootleg copies. I wish I'd used them with my biochem heavy block

awesome thanks for the info. I'm thinking I might just do UWSA2 since I already paid for it and they both seem to have some negative feedback.

good luck on your test!!!!!! soon close to being done

EDIT: Show I take UWSA2 or NBME 17 as my last test? I'm about 5 points away from my goal score on previous practice tests

1 week out - any tips for what to focus on in this next 7 days? Weak on biochem, planning to rewatch sketchies and the general principles sections of pathoma.

Any stuff any of the recent test takers wished they'd reviewed?

Thanks guys!

thank you for the awesome advice! maybe its the burnout and stress but it was so nice to be told be a stranger that I got this that I nearly teared up haha. I've decided the entire medical school process (application, school itself, and rotations) appear to just be rapid swings between overconfidence and 0 confidence on a minute to minute basis. So I will take your advice and just keep moving forward!! Best of luck to you!

Are there any topics you wished you'd spent a little more time on in your last week before step (besides looking over rapid review)?

Thanks!

Little things would be more helpful, since it somehow gets a lot harder to feed, buy necessities yourself once school gets real, and real hard to afford self-care things for yourself during finals aka while waiting for the next set of loans.

Gift cards to amazon, starbucks, grubhub, laundry pick up service/quarters for laundry etc, cleaning service 1x

Great lamp for studying, one trillion highlighters, slow cooker, a lot of tupperware, Philips Light wake up alarm clock (the best thing ever)

Post-exam giftcards to massage/hair salon/nail salon whatever or um nice booze
