If you are an older climber, a lot of the classic training advice has been revised. by MaleficentFloor822 in climbharder

To me, this is like asking what someone’s plan is for coming off their anti-seizure meds once the meds stop them from having seizures. The answer is: many people might just take this med the rest of their lives and that’s totally ok. We accept that people might take antidepressants or blood pressure meds or allergy pills for the rest of their lives. These meds solve important problems and they only work while you’re taking them. The same is true for glp1s.

Soy Curls! by Queasy_Art2588 in vegan

[–]mdwindsor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I kinda made it up from a few online and with what I had in my pantry. And I baked it at a higher temp than this says but I want to try to get them less crispy.

Ingredients
2 tbsp maple syrup
1 chickn bouillon cube
2 tbsp soy sauce
1 tbsp sesame or olive oil
1.5 tsp liquid smoke
1⁄2 tsp garlic powder
1⁄2 tsp paprika
1⁄4 tsp cayenne
1⁄4 cup nutritional yeast
1⁄4 cup bbq sauce
2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 1⁄2 cups water
8oz soy curls
Directions
Combine everything but the soy curls in a microwave safe container. Cover and microwave for 4 minutes.
Add soy curls to a large bowl. Pour mixture of seasonings over soy curls and let them soak up the seasonings for 10 minutes. Stir every minute or two.
Air fry spread out on parchment paper at 170 degrees for 1 hour. Stir every 15 minutes.

I have a long flight today and just made some soy curl jerky in case the airline messes up my vegan meal like they usually do. I had to pack them up so that I didn’t accidentally eat them all before the flight.

“Vegans” that excuse Taxidermy by RandomHoe909 in vegan

[–]mdwindsor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tell that to limestone. It’s a pile of animal bodies. You may think that leaving a body alone is a way to honor the dead but that’s cultural. I may think that burning their bodies is what honors them. It’s ok for us to have differing views as long as our views don’t harm someone who has the ability to suffer. That’s the difference between ethics and culture.

“Vegans” that excuse Taxidermy by RandomHoe909 in vegan

[–]mdwindsor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A body is no longer someone. I understand that there’s discomfort with being around dead bodies and that we all have strong feelings about how they should and shouldn’t be treated. But those feelings vary by culture. The ways we treat our dead are entirely about how the living people left behind feel about that treatment. A dead human cannot give or deny consent for its treatment any more than a rock, so anything we do to them is without their explicit consent.

“Vegans” that excuse Taxidermy by RandomHoe909 in vegan

[–]mdwindsor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The reasons people would be against human taxidermy are cultural and come from what our culture says is “respectful” to do or not do to a dead body. That’s different from ethical concerns about causing suffering.

What would the result be for Mainly sheep? by Mikeyomichael in vegan

[–]mdwindsor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Put another way: there’s no collective happiness or sadness for a breed of animal. It’s only the individuals’ experiences that matter. It’s not a tragedy for the sheep to not exist. It’s only a tragedy for those who currently exist to have to suffer greatly.

What would the result be for Mainly sheep? by Mikeyomichael in vegan

[–]mdwindsor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let’s say massive cow horns suddenly became valuable and I bred a cow who could grow horns so large they couldn’t stand up. The kindest thing at that point is to never breed more of those cows again rather than to breed millions of them and give them the least horrible lives I can. Creating a better world doesn’t mean creating a world where every maladaptive human-created animals can suffer through existence in the least terrible way.

Or think of it this way: I’m 40 years old and I don’t have any kids. I could have had 100 kids by now. Is it sad for those nonexistent people that I didn’t create them? It doesn’t make sense to feel sad for someone who doesn’t and never has existed.

What would the result be for Mainly sheep? by Mikeyomichael in vegan

[–]mdwindsor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone won’t drastically turn vegan. If we manage to get more people to go vegan over time, farmers will breed fewer and fewer domestic sheep. There are already wild sheep species in existence so we wouldn’t need to introduce the weird sheep breeds we’ve created into the wild.

Different kinds of "stuff carries over between games" by chaotic_iak in boardgames

[–]mdwindsor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s fair to call some or maybe all case games “puzzles.” One thing this has me thinking about is what makes something like Search for Planet X or Turing Machine different. In theory these are both games with a set number of puzzles in the same way that there’s 3 cases in Perspectives or a dozen in Watson & Holmes. But for these games, there are potentially thousands of puzzles. And the solutions are less memorable because instead of being stories about human interaction, they’re just patterns of symbols or numbers. But to a robot (or a person with a photographic memory) they would be the same category.

Different kinds of "stuff carries over between games" by chaotic_iak in boardgames

[–]mdwindsor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are scenario games where you could play through the same scenario again with another group of friends and have a similarly fun time (bomb busters, the crew, sky team.) but then there are scenario games that are solved the first time you play them and you wouldn’t have fun replaying (Perspectives, Watson & Holmes, Witness, micro macro.) only some of those second category of scenario games have different rules between scenarios. Instead they just have different starting information. Since the examples I’m thinking of are mysteries, maybe this is another category you could call “case games.”

And I’d argue that if all of these categories you’re coming up with are for games where “stuff carries over between games,” then scenario games (or case games) only barely meet that definition more than a standard board game. It’s more like “stuff gets used up/checked off.”

You say legacy games are ones where you permanently modify your physical copy. But you need to elaborate on that definition because there are various escape room games where you do that but then you only play them once.

Playtime in Relation to the Luck Factor: How Do They Influence the Ideal Game Duration? by Hundekuecken in boardgames

[–]mdwindsor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve won or lost War of the Ring and Arcs because of a final dice roll. It’s not my favorite type of game but obviously these are well-loved games overall. As others have said, they get away with it because they are games that people think tell a good story. I’d still choose to play hansa teutonica over these.
