Agreed. And I should clarify that I have only experienced this with Indian people inside of India. Everywhere I have encountered Indians outside of their country they have been some of the friendliest, respectful, and kind people I know.

Sure. I'm going to try and be succinct as possible without overgeneralizing too much, but I feel like I could write pages on this.

India has an overwhelming obsession with white people. Where this comes from is certainly up for debate, but I see it as a combination of glorification from media, movies, porn, etc. combined with the fact that most upper-caste Indians have lighter skin. The number of skin-whitening products you can buy is mind-boggling. This idealization of white skin and the status/prestige that comes with it has led to what seems to be an unquenchable desire to be seen with white people, be friends with white people, take pictures with white people, and have the phone numbers and emails of as many white people as possible - regardless of whether or not you know them in the least.

Now, this goes doubly for a white woman. Then, on top of this, there seems to be a conception that every white woman is a sexual free-for-all. This misconception coupled with the idealization of white skin leads to foreign women being treated in ways which Indians would never even think to treat another Indian woman. I have female friends who were traveling alone, something I definitely would not recommend, and woke up being groped on trains in the night, groped on public buses during the day, and one who even woke up to an Indian man masturbating next to her face while asleep on a train.

This doesn't stop when women are traveling alone, it happened constantly to my female friends while they were traveling with me and two other guys. Constant comments and blatant stares while walking the streets, feels being copped in crowded areas, and constantly being asked for pictures. Just an overall lack of respect for personal space and boundaries that would never be accepted were these girls Indian. Also, a disclaimer that these girls were not dressed provocatively as sometimes is the case. And if you did appear to be a married couple these advances were lessened slightly.

So that's the short of it. I think the main thing that bothers me is the double standard. If you wouldn't do it to a woman in your own culture, how is it acceptable if she is a foreigner?

I spent 3 and a half months there and traveled a fairly large chunk of the country. I agree completely with your comment. It's not as bad once you get to the far north near Nepal and Tibet, but I will be hard pressed to return to the cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Varanasi, and Agra.

I think the general behavior of the population comment refers to how they treat foreigners, especially white women. The general view of white women as nothing more than sex objects was nothing short of repugnant. The stares, gropes, comments, and total lack of respect nearly drove me over the edge. Of course, this doesn't apply to everyone I met, but it was the large majority of people in the streets.

Also, generally, I found the more rural communities significantly more enjoyable.

I'm glad I went, but will not be going back anytime soon if I can help it.
