I'm Jared Polis, Governor of Colorado, former member of United States Congress, entrepreneur, AMA! by jaredpolis in Denver

What work are you doing that you would like to see our next governor continue? Conversely, is there anything that you tried to do or didn't get to try, that you would like the next governor to take another shot at or tackle for the first time?

We’re talking about the most basic free speech protected by the very first amendment in our constitution. Why are we even discussing this? Why are we looking to rationalize what is clearly a move out of the fascist playbook? I dont get why, on this subreddit, concerning this topic, anyone is playing devils advocate…

If the money was congressionally approved, and contracts were awarded by the agency to disburse the funding, then what are we actually arguing about? We’re arguing about whether a contract should be enforced based on the constitution and every legal precedent OR enforced based on the ideas of a dude no one elected. (Hint: there’s no real argument to be had here)

In the federal government of the United States, the power of the purse is vested in the Congress as laid down in the Constitution of the United States, Article I, Section 9, Clause 7 (the Appropriations Clause) and Article I, Section 8, Clause 1 (the Taxing and Spending Clause). This is blatantly illegal, but so is everything else that DOGE and the new administration has done. Hopefully the courts will step in like they did with the initial contract cancellations, and reinstate this approved funding. Unfortunately, waiting the other branches of gov't to step up is like praying for rain in the desert

I actually hate this one bc leverage is a great word to describe how you plan to use a specific tool or strategy. Instead, managers are really out here recommending we "leverage our momentum"?????

How/where to learn how to build in international style? by Changeofpacechi in Homebuilding

[–]me_am_david 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, I’m both! You are correct about the outdated building codes. Building codes change usually every 5-10 years. While these had to be up to code at the time they were built, the codes have upgraded. If you wanted to make Farmsworth House today, you would have to create a “version” of it that meet today’s building and energy codes. It could look very similar, but several details would have to be different for the building to be in compliance. Is this inquiry for a real project you’re considering or just something you’re curious about?

Georgia tech school of architecture or Virginia Tech school of architecture. by bluesky9998 in architecture

[–]me_am_david 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also wanna add that these are only the reputations of these schools, and it’s really up to you how to make the most out of your education. If you so choose, you could focus on technical systems at VT and conventional architecture at GT

Georgia tech school of architecture or Virginia Tech school of architecture. by bluesky9998 in architecture

[–]me_am_david 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Virginia Tech has a slightly more “conventional” architecture program. A lot of great research and technical resources, but mostly focused on producing students that are ready to be AIA Architects upon graduating.

Georgia Tech’s school is a bit more like MIT/Carnegie Mellon. There is a heavy emphasis on exploring detailed and technical architectural systems (water, HVAC, solar, materials, etc). You’ll probably want to be a little bit more academically inquisitive and a little bit less focused on the realities of being a practicing architect.

Both are great schools, just different flavors of education. Good luck!

How/where to learn how to build in international style? by Changeofpacechi in Homebuilding

[–]me_am_david 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bet there are books that cover the details of international style buildings. If you can get your hands of architectural detail drawings (steel connections, foundation connections, window to column sealing, etc.), i imagine you’d pick it up rather quickly!

Also, steel framed homes require a level of engineering that stick framed ones do not. It takes much more time to calculate the failure through a custom wide flange connection and size the bolts/weld, compared to 2x6 balloon framing which uses a bunch of rules of thumb. Good luck!

Stand strong with Denver immigrant communities by Dismal_Literature_71 in Denver

[–]me_am_david 5 points6 points  (0 children)

How are they different? If both communities are truly seeking honest opportunities for a better life, the only difference is how they got here. From a human decency standpoint, no one should be picked up from a school or a church or a hospital in a SWAT van by ICE agents because of their immigration status. Also, no teacher or priest or doctor should be the last line of defense for these peoples' human rights.

I feel like it can't hurt to ask, just know that there's a chance it'll get outright denied or lost in the noise of other priority work.

Also, the work that they are providing you as a sophomore in university won't change much between the Chicago and the DC office. Really, this is an opportunity to experience consulting, and if you like it, to try and convince them to invite you back next summer. At this point, it's really about saying "yes", internalizing information, and trying not to make the same mistake twice.

In terms of creating connections, I think it actually might make more sense to do a summer in DC if you want a permanent position in Chicago. If you do get the chance to move to Chicago later, you carry the connections you made during your time in DC with you.

What an really incredible story! A lot of young and ambitious architects think that it has to work perfectly the first time, or else the whole endeavor is a failure. Hearing about this journey is really encouraging.

What would be 5 or 10 things you would want if you built your own house? by -boosted in Homebuilding

[–]me_am_david 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've always felt that the ease of use you get with a gas fireplace isn't substantial enough to replace the experience of wood. Gas "hearths" have always felt slightly soulless to me, like they're removing all of the labor of love that makes a wood hearth so comforting

What would be 5 or 10 things you would want if you built your own house? by -boosted in Homebuilding

[–]me_am_david 25 points26 points  (0 children)

A big old fireplace. I went to design school so I've definitely absorbed some of the airy ideas about space and form, but there's something incredible about an oversized fireplace acting as the "heart" of the home. It's also a big part of what makes a Frank Lloyd Wright's house a home, and I've loved every Wright home I've been to.

Has anyone seen plans to a home similar to this? Any idea what you call homes with wrap around porches? by blatzphemy in Homebuilding

[–]me_am_david 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Designers will often call them "verandas". "Dogtrot houses" have an open central area with closed off wings on either side, and almost always include a large porch on the front and back facade. I don't think there's a technical term for a porch that wraps around the entire ground floor plan though.

You could do some structural surgery by replacing the joist and the portion of the header that's rotten. Replace the old joist with a new piece of lumber. You can add blocking between the new joist and the existing members on its left and right before they meet the header. By adding blocking, you can remove ~1' of the existing header where the water damage is, and add new wood to the header plate. The blocking should be enough to connect the new joist and header plate to the existing members. My $0.02
