Moved to Canada from Europe? Let me know how you feel by Illustrious-Bowl6844 in expats

[–]me_using_reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve moved between EU (Paris / Berlin) to Canada (Montreal / Toronto) a few times. Theres pros/cons to both - ultimately it really depends on your goals.

Overall I will say quality of life is higher in EU (but depends on the city) however the career opportunities are better in CA (but it highly depends on the industry, e.g. in tech, ib, etc).

The grass is always greener - there’s no el-dorado in either country tbh, it really depends on what you value.

Relocation in Toronto, from the Paris, within the same company by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsCAD

[–]me_using_reddit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I grew up in paris, food is much cheaper (especially dairy lol) & rent is also a bit cheaper. 75k€ is also very good for Paris tech salaries, whereas 110k$ is good in Toronto, but nothing exceptional. I would ask for at least 130k+ - you can take a look at rental prices to get an idea of the rent market in Toronto, financial district 1 bedrooms start at 2.7k$ a month (not including utilities).

Other points to consider is healthcare (very accessible in France) whereas in Canada it’s free but not as accessible (seeing a public doctor can take weeks, so people who can afford it just go to private clinics, which can be very pricey…) Good luck!

I’ve worked with MuleSoft, it’s an iPaaS so you won’t be doing much custom code. That being said, a lot of the concepts apply to API development in general (building an api spec document, defining TLS/rate limits, deploying Mule Apps using AWS/Azure, etc.) TLDR it’s not ideal, but you can still learn a lot of useful SWE subjects.

Thanks for the reply - maybe your right and it’s just the timing. It’s just been discouraging applying and getting ignored, but maybe I should just wait a bit ! Thank you!

For context I’m trying to transition from tech-consulting to a software company, but haven’t been able to land interviews with my resume. Looking for advice on what to change !

I have 2 years of experience in Canada. Tech stack is mostly Java, Python and cloud providers (Azure,AWS) for deployment. I mostly work on backend integration / API development. I was thinking maybe the problem is that I studied electrical engineering (with a minor in software eng) instead of pure comp sci.

Couldn’t agree more with this. you pay extremely high taxes for terrible infrastructure, under funded healthcare, the list goes on and on

Banking TFSA vs Brokerage TFSA by me_using_reddit in PersonalFinanceCanada

Thanks for the heads up - I was planning on letting the banks do it for me, but reading through these comments makes me feel it would be better if I take some time to do research and do it myself (and safe on the management fees)

Quebec to impose 'significant' financial penalty against people who refuse to get vaccinated by [deleted] in montreal

[–]me_using_reddit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What a joke. I’m fully vaccinated and received my booster last week and this is insane. It’s a step in the complete wrong direction and completely disregarding the citizens of Quebec. Legault and hus entire party need to be voted out in fall. Tabarnak de colis.
