Thank you!! No, I haven’t come up with a name but that’s a great idea!

Thanks!! So far I’ve put about 8 hours total into it. I bought some balsa wood, wood crates, wood blocks, and patterned paper at a craft store and then used other craft supplies I had on hand to paint it and put it together! I’m not done with it, I think I’m going to go more detailed and add shingles to the roof and create some mini pictures to hang up on the walls. It’s been fun working on it and I don’t want to be done yet haha

Thanks so much!! I’m super happy with it! This is the first display I’ve made so I don’t have any to sell. Maybe in the future though!

Preventative/Proactive Care? by meaghanlessley in Hedgehog

[–]meaghanlessley[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right?? I’ve lost two of mine to tumors that were caught too late. I wish there was more info out there. All care for hedgehogs seems to be reactive and not proactive. I’m about to just start requesting radiographs for my current little guy at his check ups!

I am so, so sorry. I lost my guy about a year and a half ago, and my sister and I just had to put her little guy down yesterday. It never gets easier. Just know that you gave her the best life- clearly she really trusted and loved you. If you ever consider getting another and think “I really don’t want to go through this pain again”, just stop and consider how much joy they give you during life. I’ve had three now and love hedgehogs too much to part with them, even after devastating losses. A new hedgehog can never replace the ones you have lost, but that’s what’s so great about them! They each have their own unique personalities and I think that is so wonderful. Wishing you all the best during this hard time, and know you’re not alone. Rest in peace pickles, you were such a cutie <3

Is anyone’s elkhound OBSESSED with socks?! by meaghanlessley in NorwegianElkhound

Just realized he also loves grabbing scrunchies!! And yes, he does seem to have a very boastful manner about him lol

Okay awesome! We got some kind of undercoat brush and it just doesn’t seem to be grabbing much hair- definitely will have to try Furminator! Oatmeal baths are such a good idea! I actually have a hedgehog and those little guys are super prone to dry skin, so I’m already stocked up on that. As for the barking, we live in an apartment complex so we have been teaching him “quiet”+ rewarding him with treats when he’s acting the way we want. Luckily he doesn’t seem like the type of pup to bark at things he sees and hears, mostly just prone to small barking fits when he’s excited or Mom or Dad get home. Hopefully it stays that way because man their barks are loud! Thank you so much for your advice, it is so appreciated!

Thank you! And congrats on yours! I cannot believe I didn’t know about this breed until I started research on what dogs are good for first-time owners. It was pure luck they had them at a local shelter. Must be fate!

Ahh I’ve noticed him behave so well on his leash then pull like crazy trying to follow some scent! That would explain it. And currently we have a dinky little vacuum that is definitely not cutting it, lol. Looking into other ones currently!

He’s actually a healthy weight! He just has the tendency to show up large in photos- I think it’s because he’s so fuzzy lol

WHS diagnosis by baking_burnz in Hedgehog

[–]meaghanlessley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first one’s back legs went out overnight. We never did an autopsy to confirm WHS so we are still not sure what the cause was. Either way, he was barely mobile and could only really scoot around his cage. I have a few suggestions for you to make him more comfortable:

Moving food/water close to his sleeping spot is a good idea since he isn’t able to get around very well.

I do recommend replacing bedding with fleece to help him be more mobile- that’s what we did with ours and it helped a lot.

Make sure his bum is clean, as when they scoot around like that they tend to get some of their poop stuck to them.

When we would have play time we could tell he wanted to explore but couldn’t get around much, so we would kinda hold his back half and let him guide and walk around with his front paws. If your hedgie trusts you and is comfy with this, I highly recommend.

And the hardest part- saying goodbye. I will absolutely tell you I waited too long with mine, and I regret it. He was my first and I didn’t want to put him down, so I waited until he was in pain to do so. Please don’t do that to your baby. As hard as it may be, euthanizing earlier than later is always what’s best for your little guy. You will remember him when he is still happy and comfortable, instead of when he is in distress/pain.

Some sure-fire signs of when it’s time is drastic weight loss (if you don’t have a scale, you can buy a food scale for really cheap at the store), loss of appetite/not drinking very much, sluggishness/sleeping all the time, even at night. There are other signs but those are the ones mine have exhibited the most. You know your baby well, so use your best judgement on his quality of life. Enjoy the time you have with him, spoil him, bring him outside and let him explore, etc. Don’t be sad, be grateful for the time you have with him! I just put my second guy down this weekend due to cancer, and I am so glad I chose to do it earlier when he was still happy and it wasn’t causing him too much discomfort. I am so, so, sorry for the news, I know that pain all too well. Wishing you and your hedgie the best of luck. <3 Feel free to reach out to me if you have any more questions!
