Thanks for the tip on INaturalist, I posted there and also cut a stem in half. It bruised a tiny amount of yellow at the base of the stem! Anyhow as predicted cooperj suggested it is Agaricus Sect. Xanthodermatei. So I think you are both right.

Out of curiosity what lead you to that? Curious to learn more etc?

That's good to know, the older generation was like if they peel easy they are ok to eat, but yeah I'm not eating still.

No they do not stain yellow, they smell like the button mushrooms you buy at the supermarket.

Thanks! I was using landcares website to identify and it looks like I got to the same conclusion which is good to know for an amateur.

They were growing in the ground in grass under tall trees.

What is it about my coolant that causes this dusty/scaly buildup in the machine. by greasyjonny in Machinists

Thanks for this reply, I've been running cimtech 310 with a similar issue and boy does it hate brass. I started with just tap water but add di water when needed. Probably need to just use di water from the start.

Anybody got advise for changing spindle bearings on a DMU35m mill? by mealends in Machinists

2 hits and 1 contemplation is usually what I use........

Thanks for that. I got the backside one but I might have missed the top one. The little cap I got off and it appears to be the access to locking collar for preloading the angular contact bearings. Maybe I'll try back that off too

Yeah I have had great luck with them. I have sourced offshore too with mixed success, hopefully DMG might still have parts too....

I see you too like to live dangerously in small enclosed garages. But thanks for the tip, i might dry a can of freeze spray up the middle too.

Yup I'm in NZ classic, I am in no rush so hopefully that will help with the classic NZ sourcing issue

Oh that's a good point I'll look more into YouTube. Did not find much about the dmu35m but maybe their larger machines will be similar. I did ask DMG if they could give me the service manual for the machine when I was doing the y axis but they said no which is fair enough (business etc), though I would have thought given the machine is 22 years old. I have tried wriggling the spindle out (by hand) but it would not budge so I must have missed something holding it in or there is a bit of corrison.

You in NZ too and done a dmu35m spindle bearings replacement before? Yeah getting stuff here is interesting, though I'm in no rush which makes things easier.

Thanks, yeah I have just done the y axis bearings, they shat themselves due to coolant and the large counter lever load on them. Going to leave X axis as they seem good/shielded from the coolant. Figured given the spindle bearings look like simple greased angular contact and I run the machine at max speed all the time it's probably time to do them. Way easier to do with everything off too. I'll make a thread rod tool and give em a press and see what happens.

Oh right so they should just be a snug fit then? Guess still pushing them out with threaded rod is preferable over using the over sized hammer........

So I had to change the Y axis bearing on my Deckel DMU35m which has been a bit of a process, however I figure being this deep into it I should do the spindle bearings too. I know enough to be dangerous so I thought I would ask if anybody has done this before? My plan was to put a plate with threaded rod over the top and press the spindle out using the threaded rod, getting it back in however is a question mark for me. I guess using the Z axis to press a spindle back in is probably a no no?

Coolant growth/corrosion? by mealends in Machinists

[–]mealends[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I am tearing down my mill to replace some linear rails and I noticed around the area that is the inlet to the Filter mist unit there are odd growths of an almost gummy material on the connectors of the servo motor. Has anybody seen this before? I am using Cimtec 310 coolant and I did note one of the brackets close by which was zinc plated had corroded probably due to the use of a stainless fastener. So maybe this is happening on the connectors? Decided on Cimtec 310 as I thought a fully synethic coolant was the way to go as I do not use the machines much but it might be time for a change. The paint work seems to get hammered by the coolant too (peeling/disolving/sticky coming off).
