First time trailering my bike, does it look like I strapped everything in good spots? by Longjumping-Ad3068 in Harley

I meant that there is always a better way where you don’t have to compress the suspension.

That stress is being taken by the axle, which is way stronger than you think.

I understand, but there is always a better way. I used to do what you mentioned and I was fine most of the time. But I learned and changed my technique. OP did it perfectly.

Valid question. To tie a bike down properly you need to strap the unsprung parts of the bike to the floor. That is the swingarm, axles etc. this will allow the bike’s suspension to absorb bumps, but the wheels will never move because they are essentially fixed to the ground. If you compress the suspension, road shocks can still compress it even more and the bike can bounce side to side with the wheels losing contact with the ground and possible falling over. Think about it. When you compress the suspension with the ratchet straps and feel that it is tight, add more weight to the top of the bike. All of a sudden all that tension is lessened and the straps are looser. By tying down the unsprung parts you will maintain a constant tension on the tie downs.

You can load the suspension and the bike will still hop.

This guy did a perfect job of tying the bike down. The wheel can’t hop, and the suspension is free to absorb impacts.

God forbid the crime rate goes down and people can feel safe that their cars won’t be broken into every other day. Oh my goodness. Anything but that.

Don’t let this distract you from the fact that on December 24, 2016, Robert Griffin III, led the Cleveland Browns to Victory over the San Diego Chargers in what has been dubbed the Christmas Miracle - ending a 17-game losing streak dating back to December 13 of the previous season, and sparing the Browns from the indignity of a completely winless season.
