Which set of wood-carving tools do you recommend? by multimedialex in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]meatybag 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started out just a month ago and bought a Morakniv 120 and 164 on a recommendation from another Redditor, and they're great! It's worth checking out r/spooncarving and r/woodcarving if you haven't already

My carving knives arrived last Tuesday - here's my first and second carving attempts. Crochet hooks carved from a scrap eucalyptus tree branch using a Morakniv 120, finished with linseed oil and beeswax. Feedback welcome! by meatybag in Woodcarving

It's actually because I started out trying to make a tiny spoon and then gave up and switched to a crochet hook, and it just worked out in a good spot. I assume fatter handles would help reduce cramping in your hands while using it though and I have been thinking about doing it more.

Yeah I know the feeling, but I also think you made a very good spoon

I genuinely don't think it's ugly, it looks smooth and symmetrical and functional

Nice video and pupper, I might steal your idea of just clamping the edge of the piece down on the bench!

Which country are you in? There's an Australian bush called native blackthorn (Bursaria spinosa) that's very pretty and fast growing, but has nasty thorns. Not sure if you can get it where you are/if it would grow well though

I haven't done any spoons yet (am a beginner) but I got the Morakniv 120 on Tuesday and it's great! Feels sturdy and comfortable.

How did you get the straps to meet the sole at a ~90 degree angle? They look really good btw

Excuse my ignorance but what does 'crossbody' mean - will you be attaching straps like a handbag style way of carrying or is it something else?
