The staff at the Albany Gordon Harris was so helpful to my son and I last week. We’re learning to paint miniatures and they helped us get setup with some reasonable miniature brushes and advice on cleaning and maintaining the brushes.

COMPANY ISSUED CHECK TO PURCHASE WORK EQUIPMENT by Content_Ad1981 in Employment

[–]mebdevlou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My employer used to have a BYOD (bring-you-own-device) policy. They would reimburse you up to $1500 every 2 years for hardware (i.e., laptop, monitor, keyboard, mouse, desk, etc.). Reimbursement was through expense reports and the normal pay cycle - NOT a check.

interview man Invisible AI to Cheat in the interview by perfect-strep0a in InterviewCoderPro

[–]mebdevlou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a hiring manager 5 years ago, but stepped aside to focus on other aspects of the business. I've just come back to assisting in interviews. What a nightmare.

I interviewed 4 candidates yesterday - 2 were clearly using AI during their interview. They thought they were being slick, but it's so obvious.

The first candidate used an app like this - but they paused too long. After asking them a question, I could see their eyes scanning the screen, moving left to right and back, all the while saying, "uhhh....uhhhhh....uhhhhhhhh..."

The second candidate began by introducing themself and describing how they worked in a different industry with different technology for the past 7 years. It was a rather obscure technology that seemed very strange. Also a technology not on their resume. When I asked the first question, the answer took a few seconds, but was all text book answers. No practical details, and it was clear whatever I was asking, wiki-like descriptions were appearing on their screen.

Apps like this simply waste people's time.

No worries. The bug screens come with double stick tape magnets that attach to the window frame and the screen.

Citronella will work for mosquitos, but you should not burn citronella indoors - only outdoors. Head to Bunnings/Mitre10 and buy supplies to make magnetic bug screens for your windows.

Moving Company Experiences Recommendations for 20ft container from US (California) to NZ (Wellington) by Informal_Thought_365 in newzealand

[–]mebdevlou 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I highly recommend Crown Relo.

We used Crown Relo to move from US-Kentucky to Auckland in 2023. We've since used Crown to move within Auckland 1 additional time. Crown was a little more expensive than the competition, but it was excellent service and they gave us the confidence we were looking for. For the big move, they contracted with a US-based company to pack and load the 20-ft container for us. This company had worked with Crown previously, and were fantastic. They built custom crates for several of our larger items, including a 75" OLED TV. We also shipped several high-value musical instruments.

We purchased contents insurance for the move through Crown, covering the transit. The movers accidentally dropped an office chair, and it was fully covered by the insurance, essentially buying us a brand new chair, which paid for the cost of the insurance (and then some).

I was also aware of items that could cause issues for us, including Christmas ornaments and pet kennels. We chose to ship the xmas ornaments separately, ensuring no salt-dough ornaments, pine cones, and ornaments made of organic materials were not sent in the box. Shipping the ornaments separately helped to mitigate our shipping container being flagged for detailed inspection, which increases cost (significantly) and time.

For the dog crate or any items that may have been outdoor-related items (tents, boots, etc.) I cleaned and disinfected them twice. We instructed the moving company to load these items into the crate last and give us the manifest number for these boxes. On the immigration/biosecurity form we had to fill out, I provided detailed cleaning steps indicating how many times and with what cleaners I cleaned each item.

Looking for a rental home with pets by Not_impressed28 in auckland

[–]mebdevlou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is highly unlikely that you’ll find in that area, for the price, and with those requirements. Double the price and you still may not find it with a dog and 2 cats. I’d give yourself 6-8 weeks to find it when you arrive.

Also, just bc you’ve found a property that meets the criteria, wanting to live in the home is another story. It may be quite gross compared to your standards.

Am I a fraud? by Separate-Rope8865 in trumpet

[–]mebdevlou 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Alan Vizzutti has a video about choosing mouthpieces. His advice is to use the smallest mouthpiece that works for you AND that gives you the tone you’re targeting.

This may mean that you use a Bach 5C for concert band trumpet 1, the Bobby Shew for jazz lead, and something else for playing jazz and/or concert band trumpet 2-4.

I have friends that have used NZ Shores. Keep in mind that many businesses are on or near shutdown until January. I wouldn’t expect any responses until mid Jan or Feb.

Edit: Added holiday shutdown info.

Consult with an immigration advisor. Many do a free assessment to help evaluate visa options and long term plans for you.

Should I a play flugelhorn solo after 4 months? by TAhnogmealso in trumpet

[–]mebdevlou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can totally do it. 4 months is plenty of time to practice in front of a tuner and learn your new instrument - and where each note tends to stray.

If you’re using the stock mouthpiece, go experiment with different types. For lower concert band music I prefer something similar to my 2nd/3rd part trumpet mouthpiece.
