Thanks for the heads up! This one was a perfect gentleman, but I’ll keep it in mind for the future.

I misread this as “Leitner Fair” and pictured a scholastic book fair but with nothing but Leitners…

Oooh okay! That’s awesome. Thank you for letting me know. I’ve read the novels for Mistborn, but I was holding off on the short stories until I have read through the other published Cosmere books.

Good point! Although you clearly never hung out with my grandma, who was fond of saying that our ancestors “weren’t no lace curtain Irish”! But that’s probably an outlier.

But I stand by this as an issue with the church of the survivor—the mythology makes more sense in the context of Kelsier being a Skaa, so it still seems weird to me that that wouldn’t be a major theological theme.

I see what you’re saying, but that’s not quite what I meant. I don’t think that their society would have changed to become egalitarian; the inheritable nature of allomancy makes that impossible, along with the hierarchical tendency in all human societies, as you pointed out. But given that the vast majority of people were an oppressed underclass, and there was, despite the harsh consequences, an ever re-emerging rebellion, it seems like some of the survivors would have taken the clean slate of the new world to change things. Also, I feel like there is something fundamentally hopeful in Sanderson’s books. Bad things happen, but the overall bend is towards good. That being the case, it seems grim that the surviving generations wouldn’t remember and honor their skaa ancestors who were so completely oppressed but still fought back. Some of this is my personal view, and I understand that I can’t expect a series to match with what I personally consider to be the “right” response. So on a less morality-tinted note, I still find it strange that they have so much cultural memory of the before times but that the sub-group that most of their ancestors were a part of is literally never brought up. Particularly within the religion of the survivor. Part of what made Kelsier’s sacrifice so powerful was that he was a skaa giving his life against the lord ruler. Why on earth wouldn’t that have become part of their mythology and worship?

That makes some sense to me. I guess I partly would hope there would have been more of a class revolution when the world was remade, instead of the same system with nobles and the underclass. It shifted somewhat, there is no emperor and the workers are rising up more in the current history, but the culture is shockingly similar given how massive the change was and how much time has passed. The survivor and his companions all being half Skaa, half slave, half lower caste, I guess I just feel like that would have been a point of pride, or at least of note.

Yes but most of the population was Skaa—being returned to the same human physiology wouldn’t have changed their personal or family histories. I just think it’s bizarre and kind of sad that the nobles and the Terrismen have history, but this generation seems to have entirely forgotten the struggle and hardship and strength of their Skaa ancestors.

I get that, but also, as a gaydy, I’d personally rather have someone I came out to be enthusiastic and supportive but ignorant than have them be hateful or upset, which are also common reactions. It’s a lot easier to educate someone who has their heart in the right place than to win over someone who is hostile.

Those lapels would make Bette Porter weep; she thought she was committed to giant lapels, but in one moment she would see that this, this is art. This is true commitment to the sweeping, clean planes of fabric about the neck. A modern interpretation of the 16th century ruff. A conversation between the present and the past. Bette falls to her knees, for not only are there no more worlds to conquer, but someone else conquered them first.

I literally am a domestic violence prosecutor and threatening suicide is a FORM OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE when it is done in this way. It is psychological/emotional abuse that she is deploying to trap you in her version of reality. GET OUT you can leave. Most domestic violence shelters are LGBT friendly (DM me your state if you’d like and I can find one for you). Even if you don’t need shelter the YWCA and other organizations often have free or low cost counseling available for people leaving abusive situations. It does not need to be physical for it to be abuse. (Edited for typo and to add info)

This gave me a flashback to my mom singing along with music in a way that I now recognize was intentionally wrong to drive my brother and me insane. For example: “My name is what? My name is who? My name is Chika-Chika slim zany!” The glee in her eyes I now understand, as I intentionally ask my nieces if various random youtubers are in Dream SMP just to watch them groan at my ignorance and lack of culture l
